Page 1 of 5 303-01B Engine 3.0L (4V) 2004 Escape IN-VEHICLE REPAIR Procedure revision date: 05/26/2005 Engine Front Cover Material Removal Item Motocraft Metal Surface Cleaner ZC-21 Silicone Gasket and Sealant TA-30 Specification WSE-M5B392-A WSE-M4G323-A4 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 3. Remove the RH and LH valve covers. For additional information, refer tovalve Cover LH and Valve Cover RH in this section. 4. Remove the right lower splash shield screws and the pin-type retainer. 5. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt. 6. Remove the nut and position the bracket and wiring harness aside. 7. Remove the upper generator mounting bolts. 8. Remove the lower generator bolts and position the generator aside.
Page 2 of 5 9. Remove the generator mounting bracket bolts and remove the bracket. 10. Remove the bolt and the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. 11. Remove the power steering pump. For additional information, refer to Section 211-02. 12. Remove the bolt and remove the belt tensioner. 13. Remove the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal in this section. 14. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolt and the sensor. 15. Remove the 2 oil pan-to-front cover bolts. 16. Remove the bolts, studs and the engine front cover. Remove and discard the front cover gaskets. Installation NOTICE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surface. These tools cause scratches and gouges,
Page 3 of 5 which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of sealant. NOTICE: Do not damage the oil pan gasket while cleaning the sealant from the lower cylinder block-to-oil pan joint. 1. Clean all sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner. 2. Install 3 new gaskets in the front cover. 3. NOTE: The engine front cover must be installed and the bolts tightened within 4 minutes of applying the sealant. Apply a 6 mm (0.24 in) diameter dot of silicone gasket and sealer to the cylinder block, lower cylinder block, cylinder head and oil pan mating surfaces. 4. NOTE: Fasteners 1, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15 and 16 are studs. Position the cover and install the studs and bolts in the sequence shown. 5. Install the 2 oil pan-to-front cover bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). 6. Remove the oil pan plug and drain the engine oil. Install the plug and tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft). 7. Install the (CKP) sensor and connect the electrical connector. 8. Install the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal in this section. 9. Install the tensioner and bolt.
Page 4 of 5 10. Install the power steering pump. For additional information, refer to Section 211-02. 11. Install the CMP and the bolt. Connect the electrical connector. 12. Install the generator bracket and bolts. 13. Position the generator and install the lower generator bolts. 14. Install the upper generator bolts. 15. Position the wiring harness and bracket and install the nut. 16. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and install the accessory drive belt.
Page 5 of 5 17. Install the splash shield and the screws and pin-type retainer. 18. Install the RH and LH valve cover. For additional information, refer to Valve Cover RH and Valve Cover LH removal in this section. 19. Fill the engine with clean engine oil. 20. Connect the battery ground cable.
