Letter From the Editor I hope you were able to attend our first Tech Session of 2014. On the plus side we had 8 people show up (9 counting Ed who had to leave after bringing the coffee and donuts) all ready to attack Fred's '67 Corvair coupe. On the minus side the car was not quite in the expected condition. Supposedly it "ran when parked" 3 or 4 years ago. Although Fred couldn't remember the details, somewhere along the line someone tore out the dash and interior. The car was so full of parts that you couldn't get in it even if you wanted to. The ground was wet and soggy after the rains earlier in the week. We tried to move it to a more open area but it wouldn't budge. Initially the front tires were flat so Harry took an air cylinder to the gas station to pump it up. When he got back, we were able to fill the right front tire but the left one was leaking so badly that it just wouldn't hold air. We were able to move the car a little by using two floor jacks and a lot of effort. We finally got it clear of a fence enough so we could get in and change the left tire with a spare that someone had. But after that we still Editor At Large Tony Richards (address above) Refreshments Internet Web email Ed Rodrigues, 1702 Nelson St, San Leandro, CA 94579-2203 - (510)351-1237 http://clubs.hemmings.com/corsanews CaCalkins@astound.net couldn't push the car. The front left wheel was frozen solid (and I mean solid!). No amount of banking with a sludge hammer would free it. I have never seen one that stuck before. (see Letter... on page 3) On The Cover: At the last Tech Session we attempted to get Fred s 67 Coupe running. It ran when parked 3 or 4 years ago or so Fred thought. This was a bigger undertaking than we anticipated. More work remains! The Spyder Web is published twelve times a year by SFBA Corsa, Chapter 947 of the Corvair Society Of America (CORSA). Letter... After two hours of pushing, shoving, jacking we were able to get the car half way on to solid ground (see cover photo). But that s where we stopped. It just wasn t worth the effort to go any farther (and we were getting tired). Anyway, just to see if the engine would run, a battery was hooked up and Seth plugged in his remote starter switch (without the dash there is no ignition switch after all). The remote switch worked perfectly and the solenoid would engage but the engine did not even try to turn. We were able to rock the car back and forth to verify that the engine was not seized. While possible that the battery was too weak, more likely is the started was bad or the wiring was faulty. Because we couldn't push the car to more solid, dry ground, no one felt like crawling under to check the starter. The ground was too wet and soft to use a floor jack so it might not have even been possible to slide under to check anything. So we decided to call it a day. It was an interesting day and I want to thank those that came out for this. Especially those that drove a long ways (Seth, Paul, Rob and maybe others). While we didn't get the car running as we had intended, it was definitely a learning experience. It was going on 1:00 and people were anxious to get on the road so we didn t try for lunch. Maybe next time. There are more photos on page 5. Our next regular meeting will be held Thursday, May 1st at Denny's in Danville starting around 7:00 PM. Seth indicated he will be bringing a few DVDs for us to view. Rumor has it that one is on the design of the STS ZR-7 Corvette. Hopefully we can arrange a projector, screen, and speakers as we have before. This should be another enjoyable meeting that you won t want to miss! See you there. Here is Fred s 76 Corvair Coupe as we started our endevor to see if we could get it running. Good luck! (more photos on page 5) Treasurers Report April 2014 Fred Garrity Checking Acct.
