FOR YOUR SAFETY - PLEASE READ THESE WARNINGS! GENERAL TRUCK WARNINGS Under no circumstances should you operate your model in crowds of people. Serious injury could result. Never operate your model on busy streets or if there are cars around. Never drive your model at night, either. Do not use your model to chase pets or other animals. The radio system included in your model is not waterproof. Therefore, do not drive through water, wet grass, mud or snow. Because your model is operated by radio control, it is important to make sure you are always using fresh and/or fully charged batteries. Never allow the batteries to run low or you could lose control of the model. If your model becomes stuck, release the trigger to turn the motor off, then retrieve your model by hand. To prevent excessive r.p.m.'s from damaging the motor and/or drive-train components we suggest reducing throttle while in the air during jumps. If you are testing the motor, be careful not to touch the drive shafts, wheels or any other moving parts. Serious injury could result. R/C models produce vibration when they are running. It is important to periodically check the chassis mounting screws and fasteners. Operating the truck with loose screws or fasteners can lead to severe motor and/or chassis damage. Because the chassis is assembled from molded nylon and plastic parts, use of chemical spray cleaners is not recommended. These cleaners may damage the parts. BATTERY WARNINGS Always follow the directions provided with your battery charger to charge the motor battery. Periodically check the motor battery for excessive heat buildup during charging. If the battery is hot to the touch, remove it from the charger and let it cool. Never leave the motor battery unattended while charging. To prevent the motor battery from overheating during charge, always allow the battery to completely cool before recharging. Never over-charge the motor battery or serious damage to the battery and/or user could result RADIO SYSTEM WARNINGS When turning on the truck, always turn on the radio transmitter before turning on the truck. When turning off the truck, always turn off the truck before turning off the radio transmitter. Always unplug the motor battery when not using the truck. Never cut the receiver antenna shorter or you could lose control of the truck. When operating the truck, make sure the transmitter antenna is completely extended. Do not use a motor battery that has more than 7 cells or the ESC will be damaged. Section 1: Our Recommendations This section lists the items you will need to run and maintain your new XTM Baja Bullet RTR electric truck. As you can see, there's not much to it! Trinity Amp Max II 1500Mah Battery Pack - Part # 842006 Promax Black Widow AC/DC Peak Charger - Part # 350360 Trinity "8 Pack" AA Alkaline batteries for the transmitter - Part # 837801 Emerald Performance Plus 3 to clean the motor - Part # 340186 Adjustable wrench and # 2 phillips head screwdriver to make chassis adjustments 7mm socket wrench to make slipper-clutch adjustments Section 2: Becoming Familiar with Your Baja Bullet RTR Electric Truck Each radio system comes with crystals and stickers on the back of the transmitter and on the receiver showing which frequency the radio operates on (either in the 27Mhz or 75Mhz band). No two radio systems can operate nearby each other if they are on the same frequency. You can purchase transmitter and receiver crystals separately and change them if you plan on running your truck with other people. Battery Cover: This cover houses the 8 AA Alkaline batteries that power the transmitter. Crystal: This is the frequency crystal of the transmitter. You can change crystals in both the transmitter and the receiver (in the truck) so that you and your friends can drive at the same time. No two radio systems nearby can be on the same frequency. On/Off Switch: Turns the transmitter on and off. Two L.E.D.s show the power of the batteries. Servo Reversing Switches: Allow you to quickly and easily switch the direction the servos rotate by just flipping the switches on the top of the transmitter. Steering Wheel: Controls the trucks steering. Turn the wheel to the right and the truck turns right. Turn the wheel to the left and the truck turns left. Throttle/Reverse Trigger: Controls the forward and reverse speed of your truck. Pull the trigger to accelerate forward, release the trigger to decelerate and push the trigger to go into reverse. Trim Levers: These levers, one for steering and one for throttle/reverse control, allow you to fine tune the servo's center by sliding the levers on the transmitter. Antenna: A thin wire connected to the receiver. The antenna receives the signal from the transmitter. Battery Holder: The battery holder holds the motor battery securely in place. Body Post: The body is held to the chassis using three body posts. The front two body posts are adjustable so you can adjust the height of the body on the chassis. Bumper: The bumper is molded from high-impact plastic to provide excellent dampening in case of a front-end crash. Chassis Tub: The basic structure of the truck. All of the sub-assemblies are bolted to the chassis. Electronic Speed Control: Commonly referred to as the ESC, it is a solid state device that takes power from the battery pack and the signal from the receiver and converts them into proportional power for the motor. Motor: The Baja Bullet uses a powerful 21 turn electric motor for good speed and torque "out of the box." Receiver: The receiver picks up the signals from the transmitter and sends those signals to the ESC and the steering servo. Shock: The shocks used on the Baja Bullet are oil-filled and use a spring that is well-suited for most off-road conditions. The shocks can be easily tuned for different driving conditions. Steering Servo: This servo controls the truck's steering. A "servo saver" is installed to help prevent the servo gears from being stripped out. Tie-Rod: The tie-rod connects between the steering linkage and the castor block. The tie-rods are adjustable so you can make toe angle adjustments. Transmission: An assembly of gears and other parts that supply power from the motor to the drive axles and wheels. Wheel/Tire Assembly: The Baja Bullet includes molded rubber tires with a tread pattern that is good for most off-road applications. Section 3: Preparing to Run Your Baja Bullet Electric Truck Now that you are familiar with the major component parts of your truck, and with the functions of the Hitec Lynx Sport transmitter, it's time to prepare your model for its first run. Let's Get Started: Push the antenna down into the molded hole in the top of the transmitter. Thread the antenna (clockwise) into place and tighten it gently until is stops. Remove the plastic battery cover. Install 8 AA Alkaline batteries into the battery tray, making sure that the polarity is correct. Reinstall the battery cover. Carefully insert the end of the antenna wire into one end of the plastic antenna tube. Slide the antenna through the tube and out the other end. Note: If you find it hard to slide the antenna through the tube, apply a light coat of Windex to the antenna to make it slide easier. Push the end of the plastic tube firmly into the molded hole in the chassis. Note: Leave the excess antenna hanging from the top of the tube. Under no circumstances should you cut or shorten the antenna. Charge the motor battery using your AC/DC peak charger. Note: When you buy new battery packs, they do not come fully charged. They must be charged before they're first used. Remove the two clips from the battery mounting posts, then remove the mount itself. Slide the battery into the molded slot in the chassis. WARNING Do not plug the battery into the ESC yet. Slide the battery back as far as it will go in the slot, then push the front of the battery down completely. Reinstall the battery mount and clips to hold the battery firmly in place. IMPORTANT Make sure the tab on the front of the battery mount is toward the top of the battery as shown. 6 Need help or have any questions? Slide the transmitter's on/off switch to turn on the transmitter. The green LED should glow brightly. Note: If the green LED does not glow or if the red LED is glowing, check the batteries and replace them if necessary. IMPORTANT To prevent a runaway vehicle, always turn on the transmitter before plugging the battery pack into the ESC. Note: Before plugging the battery into the ESC, double-check that the truck's switch is in the "off" position. Plug the connector on the battery into the matching connector on the ESC. Slide the truck's on/off switch to turn on the truck. The red and green LEDs on the ESC will flash then only the green LED will stay lit. The ESC is now ready to use. IMPORTANT When you're done driving, always unplug the battery from the ESC. Section 4: Checking the Controls Range Checking the Radio System To prevent any chance of a runaway model, the radio system should be range checked before the first run of the day and/or after a crash. To range check the radio system, do the following: Plug in the battery pack into the ESC, turn on the transmitter, then turn on the truck. Extend the transmitter antenna completely. With the truck on the ground walk away from the truck about 150 feet. Move the steering wheel while looking at the truck's wheels. The wheels should pivot smoothly back and forth as you rotate the steering wheel back and forth. If the radio system does not operate properly, please refer to the troubleshooting guide on page # 13 before going further. WARNING Never attempt to operate your model if the radio control system is not functioning properly. Doing so could be harmful to others around you and/or to your model. Checking the Steering Controls With the both the transmitter and the truck turned on, rotate the transmitter's steering wheel forward (to the right). The front wheels on the truck should turn right. If they don't, flip the steering servo reversing switch on the top of the transmitter to change the direction. Rotate the transmitter's steering wheel backward (to the left). The front wheels on the truck should turn left. Let go of the steering wheel. The truck's wheels should return to center. If the wheels do not point straight ahead (center) after you return the steering wheel to center, move the steering trim lever on the transmitter to adjust the wheels so that they point straight ahead. Checking the Throttle Controls While holding the chassis off the ground, pull back on the throttle trigger. The rear wheels should spin counter-clockwise as shown. If the wheels don't spin counter-clockwise when you pull back on the trigger, flip the throttle servo reversing switch on the top of the transmitter to change the direction. While holding the chassis off the ground, push forward on the throttle trigger. The rear wheels should spin clockwise as shown. Release the trigger and the wheels should stop spinning. Section 5: Electronic Speed Control The ESC included in your Baja Bullet truck does not require any programming or setup. This is done for you automatically when you turn on the transmitter and the truck. Listed below is some information you may find useful about the ESC: The ESC includes a brake and reverse function. When you let go of the throttle trigger, the truck will coast. When you push the throttle trigger, the truck will brake. When you push the throttle trigger all the way forward, the truck will go into reverse. Note that the truck will not instantly go into reverse if it's moving forward. It will brake first, then go into reverse. This saves wear on the motor and drivetrain. The ESC includes signal and temperature protection circuitry. The ESC will not work if there is a problem with the signal or a low battery. In this case the red and green LEDs will flash. To reset the ESC, turn the ESC off and on again - you may need to recharge the battery first. If the ESC has overheated, it will stop and the red and green LEDs will light continuously. The ESC will resume use automatically after the ESC's temperature has dropped lower than 80º - 90º Celsius. Section 6: Installing the Body Using a pair of scissors cut out each decal along its outer edges. Carefully adhere the decals to the body using the photos on the box cover to position them. Double check that no parts of the body touch the tires or suspension arms. If any parts are touching, remove the body and use a pair of scissors to trim the body to clear any obstructions. Note: There is a predrilled hole in the top of the body for the antenna tube to exit. Place the body onto the chassis, making sure the three predrilled holes in the body slide over the three body posts. Secure the body in place using three metal body clips. The body height can be adjusted by removing the screws holding the body posts in place, readjusting the height of the posts, then reinstalling the screws. Section 7: Making Chassis Adjustments Chassis alignment and geometry are important if you want your truck to perform well. A good performing truck means a truck that is easier to drive, too. Follow our guidelines in this section to get the most out of your truck. It's very important when making changes to the settings of your truck that you make the settings the same for each side. For example, if you change the camber angle on the right front tire, you must change the camber angle of the left front tire the same amount. If you change the spring tension on the left front shock, you must change the spring tension on the right front shock the same amount, and so on. Do not make any changes that are more than 3 degrees from the initial settings listed or the handling characteristics of your truck will become very poor. Adjusting the Camber Camber changes the amount of the tire's surface that contacts the ground. Tires that are exactly perpendicular to ground have 0 degrees of camber. If the tops of the tires lean toward each other, the tires have negative camber. If the tops of the tires lean out away from each other, the tires have positive camber. (Camber angles exaggerated for photo clarity) Adjust the camber by turning the upper turnbuckles using an adjustable wrench. Negative Camber Positive Camber Recommended Initial Settings: For driving on smooth surfaces set both the front and back wheels at 0 degrees. For driving on rough surfaces set the front wheels at -1 degrees and the back wheels at -2 degrees. Camber settings should be measured with the truck at its normal ride height. For more precise camber adjustments, use the R.P.M. Precision Camber Gauge (P/N 708099). Adjusting the Toe Angle The toe angle is the angle of both front tires to each other - when viewed from above. Toe-in (both tires pointing toward each other) will make your truck more stable and it will track straighter. Toe-out (both tires pointing away from each other) will make your truck turn quicker, but it will be less stable. Recommended Initial Settings: 1-2 degrees toe-in to add stability. Adding 3 degrees or more of toe-in will result in excessive loss of speed and difficulty steering the truck. Adjust the toe-in by turning the tie-rods with an adjustable wrench. Adjusting the Spring Tension By adjusting the spring tension of the shocks, you can increase steering sensitivity and increase the ride-height of the truck. How you drive your truck will dictate what settings you should be using. As an example, if you're using your truck off-road and going over lots of jumps, you may want to increase the spring tension of the front shocks to help prevent the front of the truck from bottoming out. Increase the spring tension by loosening the clamp-screw on the tensioner (at the top of each shock), pushing the tensioner down, then tightening the clamp-screw. Recommended Initial Settings: Adjust the spring tensioners so that they are at the uppermost portion of the shock. When adjusting the spring tension, make sure to adjust the right and left sides equally. For precision shock adjustments, use the Trinity Off-Road Shock Dyno (P/N 840021). Changing the Shock Oil Changing the shock oil (the oil inside the shocks) will change the dampening characteristics of the shocks. Generally, if you are running on smooth surfaces, use a heavier weight oil. If you are running on rough surfaces, use a lighter weight oil. We recommend using only 100% Silicon Shock Oil. Do not use motor oil. The shock oil in the Baja Bullet's shocks is good for most off-road applications. Adjusting the Slipper Clutch The slipper clutch is a traction control device that uses two metal plates and a series of fiber pads to control how much power is transmitted from the motor to the gear box and drive-train. Adjustments to the slipper clutch can be made by first removing the three screws that hold the plastic drive cover in place, then by removing the drive cover to expose the slipper clutch assembly. To adjust the slipper clutch you simply turn the hex nut either in to tighten the clutch (less slip) or out to loosen the clutch (more slip). After making each adjustment, accelerate the truck for a short distance while carefully watching the slipper clutch. Ideally the clutch should slip for about the first foot after acceleration. Recommended Initial Settings: The slipper clutch comes factory set for most driving conditions. More Slip Results In: Less Slip Results In: More traction and longer lasting gears. Less traction and more acceleration. IMPORTANT Running the slipper clutch too loose can cause the fiber pads to wear out very quickly and replacement under this circumstance will not be covered under warranty. Section 8: Checking and Adjusting the Gear Mesh It's important to periodically check the mesh between the motor pinion gear and the spur gear. Sometimes the motor can work itself out of alignment during very rough running conditions. To adjust the gear mesh, first remove the plastic gear cover. Loosen the two screws that hold the motor in place and pivot the motor so there is a gap between the pinion gear and the spur gear. Slide a small piece of notebook paper or copier paper between the two gears. Pivot the motor so that the pinion gear is pushed up against the spur gear and tighten the two screws. Remove the paper and double-check the gear mesh. If the gear mesh is set properly, you should feel a very small amount of play between the two gears. If there is an excessive amount of play or no play at all, readjust the gear mesh again. WARNING Do not run the truck if the gear mesh is out of alignment. Doing so can cause severe damage to the spur gear. Section 9: Maintenance Following a simple maintenance schedule will ensure that your truck, motor and radio system operate in top condition every time you use them. It is strongly suggested. Periodically check the gear mesh to make sure it is not out of alignment. If necessary, reset the gear mesh before running the truck again. Check the chassis for any loose screws, nuts or bolts. Tighten them if necessary. Check the steering linkage for any signs of wear or misalignment. Tighten and/or readjust it as necessary. Once in a while, remove the wheels and clean the wheel bearings using a bearing cleaner. This will remove any dust and grit that may over time damage the bearings. Check the electronics for any signs of damage. This should include the steering servo, receiver, motor, wiring and electronic speed control. After a period of time the chassis will accumulate a lot of dirt and debris. This build-up should be cleaned off using a stiff brush and high-pressure air. Because the chassis is assembled from molded nylon and plastic parts, use of chemical spray cleaners is not recommended. These cleaners may damage the parts. Replacement of parts damaged by chemical cleaners will not be covered under warranty. After cleaning the chassis you should oil the moving parts of the chassis. Do not oil the slipper clutch or you will damage the fiber disc and the slipper clutch will not work. Periodically check the condition of the transmitter batteries. If you think they might be low, replace them with a fresh set. Periodically remove the motor from the truck and clean it inside and out using a specially designed motor cleaner. Be very careful not to get motor cleaner on the chassis. After cleaning the motor with motor cleaner, always lightly oil the motor bushings on each end of the motor. Check the condition of the electrical connectors, including the battery pack connector, for any signs of wear or damage. Check the shocks to ensure they have not developed any leaks. Check the body mounts and clips for loss of integrity. Periodically check the tire/wheel joints. If a tire is coming loose from the wheel, carefully glue it back down using a thin bead of tire glue. 12 Need help or have any questions?
