6/30/2009 Head of the Lakes Corvair Association Newsletter Hot Air Newsletter Dan Ed Bob Summer has arrived!!! Well, summer has finally arrived and Things are getting busy. Jason and I have had a busy time in my garage and have a lot more work to finish up. We have a couple road trips planned to work on a couple Corvairs in need of attention. So far this year our club has made a couple small cruises and a lot of fun was had. Anytime our Corvairs are on the road we get a lot of attention. As a club we need to plan more of these cruises and get more members involved. I thought about a topic for this months newsletter s front page and drew a blank. I sat back and thought about all the things that have happened over the past few years. Going back to my first Corvair that was a 63 4 door. That s when I first met a guy named Ed Lampi. He got me started with needed parts and answers to my questions about working on my new project. That s where it all started. Later I moved to Seattle and joined up with another big group of Corvair Nuts. We even started up a new Corvair club on the north side of Seattle and the club is still running and growing strong today. In July Kathy and I are driving out to Seattle and I can t wait to see the gang again. I learned so much from all of them and will be ever thankful. Now it s fun passing on the info to new members. The next couple years are going to be a couple of busy years. The National Convention will be in Iowa and they will be needing our help. Everyone should plan on attending, you won t regret it. There will be Corvairs from all parts of the country. It s a sight to see if you have never been to one. Every year our club continues to grow. When we first started planning on the re-birth of the club I never dreamed that we would have this many members. Now we need to get more members involved. If you have an idea for a club function just grab a club officer and let him know. We are always open for ideas. We NEED Your input. This is YOUR club so get involved!! The Corvair Cavalry has been a great success. We have worked on and fixed quite a few Corvairs. Jason and I have spent many hours out in the garage working. We still have a couple small road trips to go on. Dick Dee needs some help and so does Charlie Running. I ll get with Jason and we will be there the first chance we both get free. We haven t forgot it just lining up the right time. See You all at the next meeting July 8th at Perkin s London RD.

Busy Time For The Cavalry!!!!!!! Well the old 64 110 Frankenstein engine is on the garage floor and Jason s fresh 102 is in the car and running. We worked out in the garage until 11 pm last night and fired it up. With no exhaust I m sure I made a few neighbors happy. All that s left is hooking up some linkage and put the tin back on. She sounds good but a wee bit loud with no exhaust. Then he ll get some time to break it in and we ll install the Judson on it. It s going to be fun. We pulled the old engine that ran hard for about 10,000 miles and found a leaking head gasket and busted rings. Not bad for an engine put together from all used mis-matched parts. She was still running strong Jason said but smoking bad, now we know why. I think after Jason s and Dan s is fixed we are going to rebuild the 64 and put some goodies in it Jason has stashed away. This summer I need to drop my drivetrain and fix a pesky leak in the tranny area of my 140. I also have some idea s for hooking up my 140 linkage different. MORE POWER!!! If you need something done just give me a yell and we ll get you fixed up. Jason an myself took my 62 on a short cruise to Don Juntunen s garage and did some work on his 63 Arizona rust free Corvair. What a nice rig. We fixed a leaking and plugged carb and cleaned up some pitted points. And adjusted the timing that was off. After we got it running good I balanced the carbs and it ran great, He will be ordering new plug wires points and rotor and a cap. He has a duel exhaust setup to install and all new weather-strips. It s going to be a nice car and he s looking forward to cruising with us. On the trip there Jason noticed a noise coming from my rear of the 62 and we decided it might be time for some new u- joints. As soon as I have some free time I ll pull it apart. Free time whats that? At the meeting Art said he s still having carb problems so we ll have to check that out too. It s a never ending job with these ole Vairs but it s fun. And job security. Also Dan Rutka said he needs some work done so I told him to drop his off at my garage and we ll go thru it for him. He ll be out of town for a few days so we will have time to go over it good. Bob Saunder has his loadside almost ready to go on the rotisserie so we ll have to pull his engine and drive train. I can see this is going to be a Busy Busy summer. I ll be looking forward to our vacation to Seattle in July. Car show News Art Bringe and Ed Lampe attended the Lake Superior College Car Show and Ed took a trophy home for Best car in small car class. Way to go ED!!! The Restoration Begins After the Memorial Day Parade Jason and myself dropped over to Bob Saunders to Roll over his Loadside in his garage. Dick Eilers supplied the rotisserie and it worked like a dream. I makes it a lot easier to finish the work on the underside of the truck. The underside looks good. Just a couple bad spots. We dropped his drive train and hooked it up and here s the results. This proves that Nader was right, Corvairs DO roll over. Corvair s in the Memorial Day Parade Dan Rutka, Art Bringe, Ed Lampi, Jason Agnich, and myself drove our Corvairs in the Duluth s west end memorial Day Parade. I drove Pete Pruddens s Red Convertible and had Rosie as a passenger. Jason drove my 62 loaded with the kids. It was a cool day but warmed up by Parade time. Fun was had by all and our Vairs looked good!!

Wed June 2nd we had our Cruise up to Gordy s for burgers and a short meeting. 5 Corvairs met in Superior and then headed out thru Jay Cook State park on our way up to Gordy s. What a fantastic drive! Along the way we met up with Don Juntunen in Carlton and we met the rest of the group at Gordy s. We had a total of 8 Corvairs all parked in a row. It sure got a lot of looks. We ate some GREAT burgers and held a short meeting and then went out to the parking lot for some tire kicking and Corvair chat. It was a fun night and I hope we do more of these. Thanks go to Bob Saunders for putting this together. Bob missed the cruise because his mother was sick and had to go to the hospital. Prayer s for his mother would be appreciated. All in all it was a great day. Cruise up to Gordy s

Cleaning Heads with Easy Off Oven Cleaner I bought a blue can off Easy Off Oven cleaner and sprayed it on this head. First I knocked all the big stuff off then a quick bath in the parts washer. Next I sprayed it down with Easy Off and let it sit for about 15-20 mins. I hosed it off and here is the results with almost no brushing or cleaning at all. The heads shine like new. Next is a little digging at the dirt that s left the spray again and blast it with the pressure washer. Make surer you wear rubber gloves and eye protection. OOPS!!! On the way back from our cruise to Gordy s Jason Agnich and myself were Playing catch me if ya can and just before I went up the hill by Midway road on the freeway my 62 made a few pops and then a dead miss. I talked to Ed the next day and this is what I found, a bent and broken pushrod and another rocker off the pushrod. After installing another good pushrod and Good rocker nut and a valve adjustment I was back on the road. While I had it up I changed both U-joints and greased the rear wheel bearings. Now I m ready for some cruzin!!!! Barnum Car Show Ed Lampi and Art Bringe went to Barnum and met Charlie Running and his Bride. It was a very nice show with lots of nice cars. Everything went well until the rains came. We need rain, bu not at Car Shows. Charlie said his car was lacking power. Ed and I adjusted the timing and tightened the screws on his leaking fuel pump. Hope it ran better on the way home. Ed and Charlie both got trophy's so the Corvairs did well. Art Bringe

The Corvairs ran great and a good day was had by all. THANKS go out to Jeff and family for the fun day!!

Lunch with another Corvair Nut Today June 11th Bob Saunders and myself had lunch with another Corvair Nut from Rochester Minn. Bob answered an e-mail and we met Gary Anderson at Culvers for a nice lunch and swapped a few Corvair stories. Next we went over to Bob s garage and showed Gary the loadside on the rotisserie. Trip to All GM Show (pictures on upper right) I drove down with my son John and friend Lee. They had 14 cars registered and I counted 14 cars. The swap meet seemed about the same as last year or maybe a little larger. Cars were down a little because of the weather. It was as cold as Duluth. We talked to Fran and other members and had a good time. Dick Eilers and friend stopped by and so did Dave Fierek, a former member of our club. Hopefully we Can get more cars down there next year, They are getting tired of looking at the purple beast from Duluth.
