EU 2 African Swine Fever According to the EU C ommission s reporting system for the outbreak of disease, the following outbreaks of ASF were reported for the following and Ukraine up to and including 10 June. Countries Period Year to date 4 June 10 June 1 Jan 10 June Pigs Wild boar Pigs Wild boar Estonia 7 164 Latvia 12 347 Lithuania 5 16 5 944 Poland 5 48 13 1358 Italy 3 24 Ukraine 32 27 Czech Republic 28 Romania 4 7 1 Hungary 4 18 RUSSIA African Swine Fever Last week, Russia reported eight cases of ASF from the previous weeks. One case was discovered among wild boar while seven were at small pig farms where 339 pigs were affected. Four of the cases were in the Kaliningrad region, a Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea. The others were in south and west Russia. MOLDOVA African Swine Fever Last week, Moldova reported one outbreak of ASF at a small farm of 22 pigs. CHINA Foot and mouth disease Last week the Chinese authorities reported three cases of foot and mouth disease at three cattle farms comprising 36, 60 and 63 head of cattle. The three cases were located in the provinces of Hubei, Shanxi and Anhui.

CHINA 3 Import tariffs reduced from 1 July China has announced that import tariffs on a range of consumer goods will be reduced with effect from 1 July. Included in the products are a number of processed pig meat products and sausages where import tariffs will be reduced from 15 to 5 per cent. CHINA/ USA China imposes higher tariffs on American products As a retaliatory measure against President Trump s new U.S. import restrictions on Chinese products, China has announced that import tariffs of 25 per cent will be imposed on approximately 500 American agricultural products with effect from 6 July. At the time of writing, it is unclear whether the new list of products will mean additional tariffs on U.S. pig meat. So far, the list contains the same American pig meat products that already carry import tariffs of 25 per cent. USA Seaboard Triumph Foods will begin slaughtering in two shifts in October Seaboard Triumph Foods announced last week that from mid-october, they will switch from one shift to two at their new slaughterhouse in Sioux City, Iowa. This will mean an increase in slaughterings from around 10,000 pigs per day to around 20,000. The new slaughterhouse in Sioux City began slaughtering on 5 September last year. The operation is a joint venture partnership between Seaboard Foods and Triumph Foods. The latter is owned by pig producers while the former is a subsidiary of Seaboard Corporation.
