TRANSFER PATTERNS OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI>I, FALL 23 Undergraduate transfers into the University of Hawai>i system measured 5,454 for Fall 23, a decline of 16.7% from Fall 22 (Table 1 and Figure 1). UH Mānoa had the largest number of undergraduate transfers at 1,787. Kapi>olani CC was next with 961, followed by UH Hilo (677), Leeward CC (628), Honolulu CC (57), Maui CC (235), UH- West O>ahu (232), Windward CC (213), Hawai>i CC (179), and Kaua>i CC (35). Migration to a new student registration system took place at the UH Community Colleges in Summer 22, at UH-West O ahu in Spring 23 and at UH Mānoa and UH Hilo in Fall 23. Until March 23, registration data were in separate databases by UH campus. After the migration, the registration databases were combined into one database for the entire UH system. This change has had an important impact on the transfer data. Prior to the migration, students enrolled at one UH campus were required to complete a separate application to enroll in classes at a second UH campus. These students would be counted as transfers at the second UH campus. In the new environment, this procedure still holds true for students wishing to take classes at a UH four-year campus (UH Mānoa, UH Hilo or UH-West O ahu). However, for those students already enrolled at one UH campus, either a four-year campus or a UH Community College, who wish to take classes at a second UH Community College, a separate application is no longer required. Under the new system, these students will not be counted as transfers at the second UH Community College. Students will be counted as transfers at a UH Community College only if they are changing their home campus designation. This change in procedure helps to explain the rather large decreases in transfers noted across the UH system in Fall 23 (Table 1). Many students who formerly were counted as transfers from one UH campus to another are no longer counted as transfers. Furthermore, in conjunction with the migration to the new registration system, there have been large increases in the number of transfer records with invalid data on previous college. These increases are related to coding processes at the UH campuses. For these reasons, the reader is advised to exercise caution when comparing transfer data over time. Efforts to improve the quality of the data are on-going. Other transfer highlights:! In Fall 23, approximately 29% of transfer activity system-wide was from one UH campus to another (Table 1 and Figure 3). This figure contrasts sharply to past years, when over 5% of transfers were from one UH campus to another. Transfers from the U.S. mainland institutions constituted another 32%, while transfers from Hawai i private colleges accounted for 6%.! Transfers from U.S mainland institutions into the UH campuses increased substantially from Fall 1997 to Fall 21 (Table 1 and Figure 4). For the last two fall semesters the numbers have been somewhat lower, but still indicate a strong growth trend.

Merged with UH Manoa in Fall 1999. 2/ In Academic Year 22-23, the UH system migrated to a new student registration system. Subsequently, there was a large increase in transfer records with invalid data on previous college, as well as degradation of transfer data in other areas. Efforts to improve the data quality are ongoing. 3/ Data for UH Manoa includes Outreach College, beginning Fall 1999. 4/ Due to a computer irregularity, transfers into Maui are understated. The total for Fall 1994 was approximately 12. Note: In Fall 1997, numbers for all years were adjusted to exclude graduate students. Therefore, the figures shown here may differ from those in reports published before 1997. V% = Vertical percentage; H% = Horizontal percentage.

Subsequently, there was a large increase in transfer records with invalid data on previous college, as well as degradation of transfer data in other areas. Efforts to improve the data quality are ongoing. Note: Data on transfers from UH-West O ahu to other UH campuses not available for Fall 23.

Prior to merger in Fall 1999, Outreach College was treated as a separate campus for transfer purposes. 2/ Data on transfers from UH-West O ahu to other UH campuses not available for Fall 23. Note: In Academic Year 22-23, the UH system migrated to a new student registration system. Subsequently, there was a large increase in transfer records with invalid data on previous college, as well as degradation of transfer data in other areas. Efforts to improve the data quality are ongoing. Note: H% = Horizontal percentage.
