2015 National Meet Report story and photos by Steve Christy This past summer our 49 th National Meet was held in Warren, Ohio. This is the first time we have been in Warren for our National since the 100 th Anniversary in 1999. The honorary chair was Terry Martin and Mary Ann Porinchak chaired the event with the National Packard Museum as an affiliate of the Packard Club the hosting region. The staff and volunteers at the museum were assisted by members of Buckeye Packards. This year the meet started on Tuesday and ran through Saturday. This allowed the meet to coincide with the city of Warren s Legacy Week. The welcoming party Tuesday evening was held at the museum. There were many members of Packards International in attendance and Wednesday evening they held a reception and dinner at the Buckeye Club, which is the former home of J.W. Packard. Thursday was the day of meetings. In the morning were the Board of Trustees meeting, the Judges meeting, and the Editors meeting. The Directors luncheon was held at the Saratoga Club. This is the second annual Directors luncheon and it once again was a positive exchange of ideas. Thursday afternoon the Roster Keepers meeting was led by Dave English who stepped in for J.P. McVicker who was unable to attend. Due to the demands of that position Dave is now co-chairing it with J.P. We held the general membership meeting that afternoon just prior to the buses leaving for Pittsburgh for the dinner cruise. This year we had drawings for all in attendance at the membership meeting. We awarded 3 gift certificates to be used in the swap meet. 3 rd place was a $25.00 gift certificate, 2 nd a $50.00 gift certificate and 1 st place was a $75.00 gift certificate. Dinner cruises at Packard Nationals are always a big hit and this year s to Pittsburgh was a huge hit. Friday we toured two wonderful collections. The first was to Fred Warren s collection of customs, street rods, and motorcycles. The second was Gene Tareshawty s Packard collection which includes a number of Packard Darrin s. 4
Saturday was Judging Day and that evening the banquet. This is the first time we have had both on the same day. The weather for the entire week leading up to judging was spectacular. Judging Day we had a very light mist on and off. However, it was not enough to interfere with being able to judge the cars and everyone having a great time. At the banquet the winner of the Wayne Merriman Award was Brady Smith of Michigan with his exquisite 1954 Packard Hearse. The winners of the Best of Show pre-war were William Vaccaro s 1930 442 boattail speedster and Howard Schaevitz s 1912 Model 18 landaulet. The best of show post-war was George Holinga s 1947 2122 Custom Super Clipper sedan. This car was the winner of the Wayne Merriman Award in 2010. Following the banquet we were entertained with music by the Packard Band. Sunday morning was the farewell breakfast. This summer the National will be in Reading Pennsylvania. The dates are July 12 th July 18 th. This will be our 50 th National. I would personally like to thank The Packard Museum staff and volunteers and members of Buckeye Packards for putting on an outstanding meet. For Packard enthusiasts it is always fun going home and with the 2013 National in Detroit and 2014 National in Warren we have visited the birth and expansion of Packard from 1899 until 1958. 2015 Merriman Award Winner!
