Check For Engine Damage CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head(s). Repair Times - hrs Remove & install: Timing belt 4,65 Injection pump belt 1,85 Special Tools Flywheel timing pin - Land Rover No.LRT-12-058. Tensioning tool - Land Rover No.LRT-12-143. Sprocket holding tool - Land Rover No.LRT-12-132. Injection pump sprocket timing pin - Land Rover No.LRT-12-141. Dial type torque wrench. Special Precautions Disconnect battery earth lead. DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed. Remove glow plugs to ease turning engine. Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated). DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets. Observe all tightening torques. Check diesel injection pump timing after belt replacement. Removal
2 Timing Belt 1. Raise and support front of vehicle. 2. Remove: Front drive shafts. Auxiliary drive belt. AC pump (if fitted). DO NOT disconnect hoses. 3. Support engine. 4. Remove: Engine lower tie-bar. LH engine mounting strut. LH engine mounting. 5. Position engine to LH side of engine compartment. 6. Remove: Timing belt upper cover [1] Camshaft sprocket damper [2] 7. Turn crankshaft clockwise until camshaft front sprocket timing marks aligned [3] 8. Insert timing pin in flywheel through engine backplate [4]. Tool No.LRT-12-058. 9. Remove: Crankshaft pulley bolt [6] Crankshaft pulley [7] Timing belt lower cover [8] RH engine mounting plate [5] Access plug from timing belt rear cover [9] 10. Slacken tensioner bolt [10]. Use Allen key. 11. Install special tool No.LRT-12-143 [12] until flush with end of plunger [11] 12. Tighten nut [13] to retract plunger. 13. Lightly tighten tensioner bolt [10] 14. Mark direction of rotation on belt with chalk if belt is to be reused. 15. Remove timing belt. 16. Remove special tool. Tool No.LRT-12-143 [12] Installation Original Timing Belt
3 1. Check tensioner spring for distortion. Check free length of tensioner spring is 65 mm [14] 2. Ensure camshaft front sprocket timing marks aligned [3] 3. Ensure flywheel timing pin located correctly [4] 4. Fit timing belt. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets. Observe direction of rotation marks on belt. 5. Fit engine mounting plate [5]. Tighten nuts and bolts to 30 Nm + 120. 6. Release tensioner plunger. 7. Tighten tensioner bolt [10] 8. Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley and bolt [6] & [7] 9. Remove flywheel timing pin [4] 10. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until flywheel timing pin can be inserted [4] 11. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [3] 12. Remove tensioner bolt [10]. Fit new bolt. Tightening torque: 55 Nm [10] 13. Install components in reverse order of removal. 14. Fit access plug to timing belt rear cover [9] 15. Fit camshaft front sprocket damper [2]. Fit new bolts. Tightening torque: 10 Nm. 16. Fit new driveshaft circlips. 17. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [6]. Tightening torque: 63 Nm + 90. Replacement Timing Belt 1. Check tensioner spring for distortion. Check free length of tensioner spring is 65 mm [14] 2. Ensure camshaft front sprocket timing marks aligned [3] 3. Ensure flywheel timing pin located correctly [4] 4. Fit timing belt. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets. Observe direction of rotation marks on belt. 5. Fit engine mounting plate [5]. Tighten nuts and bolts to 30 Nm + 120. 6. Slacken tensioner bolt [10] 7. Install special tool No.LRT-12-143 [12] 8. Tighten nut [13] to fully compress plunger spring. 9. Turn centre spindle fourteen complete turns clockwise [12]
4 10. Tighten tensioner bolt [10] 11. Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley and bolt [6] & [7] 12. Remove flywheel timing pin [4] 13. Turn crankshaft six turns clockwise until flywheel timing pin can be inserted [4] 14. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [3] 15. Remove tensioner bolt [10]. Fit new bolt [10]. DO NOT tighten. 16. Release tensioner plunger. 17. Remove special tool [12] 18. Tighten tensioner bolt to 55 Nm [10] 19. Install components in reverse order of removal. 20. Fit access plug to timing belt rear cover [9] 21. Fit camshaft front sprocket damper [2]. Fit new bolts. Tightening torque: 10 Nm. 22. Fit new driveshaft circlips. 23. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [6]. Tightening torque: 63 Nm + 90. Removal Injection Pump Belt 1. Remove: Injection pump belt cover [15] Timing belt upper cover [1] 2. Turn crankshaft clockwise until camshaft front sprocket timing marks aligned [3] 3. Insert timing pin in flywheel through engine backplate [4]. Tool No.LRT-12-058. 4. Insert timing pin into injection pump sprocket and rear cover [16]. Tool No.LRT-12-141. 5. Remove camshaft front sprocket damper [2] 6. Hold camshaft front sprocket. Use tool No.LRT-12-132 [20] 7. Slacken camshaft rear sprocket bolts [17] 8. Slacken tensioner bolt [18]. Move tensioner away from belt and lightly tighten bolt.
5 9. Mark direction of rotation on belt with chalk if belt is to be reused. 10. Remove injection pump belt. WARNING: If belt has been in use for more than 24,000 miles: Fit new belt.warning: If belt has been in use for more than 40.000 km: Fit new belt. Installation Injection Pump Belt 1. Turn camshaft rear sprocket fully clockwise in slotted holes. 2. Fit belt to injection pump sprocket. 3. Turn camshaft rear sprocket slowly anti-clockwise until belt teeth engage in sprocket. 4. Slacken tensioner bolt [18] 5. Fit dial type torque wrench to square hole in tensioner plate [19] 6. Tension belt to 6 Nm. 7. Tighten tensioner bolt [18] 8. Hold camshaft front sprocket. Use tool No.LRT-12-132 [20] 9. Tighten camshaft rear sprocket bolts [17] 10. Remove: Flywheel timing pin [4] Injection pump sprocket timing pin [16] 11. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise. 12. Ensure camshaft front sprocket timing marks aligned [3] 13. Insert timing pin in flywheel [4]. Tool No.LRT-12-058. 14. Slacken camshaft rear sprocket bolts [17] 15. Insert timing pin into injection pump sprocket and rear cover [16]. Tool No.LRT-12-141. 16. Slacken tensioner bolt [18] 17. Fit dial type torque wrench to square hole in tensioner plate [19] 18. Tension belt to 6 Nm. 19. Tighten tensioner bolt to 55 Nm [18] 20. Apply anti-clockwise torque of 25 Nm to camshaft. 21. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts to 25 Nm [17] 22. Remove:
