4 Gas Springs FIBRO Gas Springs The etensive range of FIBRO Gas Springs constitutes an ideal supplement to and epansion of the traditional programmes of spring elements such als helical springs, disc springs and elastomer units. With their minimal space requirement, Gas Springs close a gap where ever the accent is on accomodation of the utmot force component within a minimum of space or where eceedingl large travel is demanded: FIBRO Gas Springs take care of both demands, even in combination. Their self-contained nitrogen charge makes FIBRO Gas Springs completel autonomous devices. Feeder pipes or storage vessel are not required. Monitoring of charge pressure, however, is necessar in certain special cases. Suitable equipment for in-situ pressure control can be found in the ccessories Section. s long as all mounting detail is laid out with due circumspection, removal and installation of the units presents no problems whatsoever. Instructions are included with ever deliver of gas springs. On pages F331 to F 338 a number of interesting installation eamples are illustrated in detail. Functioning The pressure medium is a commerciall available, environment-friendl nitrogen. FIBRO Gas Springs have a standard charge pressure of ma. 150 bar (180 bar). Depending on spring size and tpe, this pressure offers initial force ratings of 2 dan to,000 dan. Pressure Build-Up In operation the piston rod enters the spring space whose volume is progressivel reduced. The resulting pressure rise can be plotted on the Gas Spring Diagram as a multiplication factor. The spring force is the product of initial force times that pressure-rise factor and can therefore be calculated easil. Working Temperature The spring temperature should not eceed +80 C. Charge Pressure Modification of charge pressure allows varia tion of the force rating and can be predetermined from the spring Diagram. Installation FIBRO Gas Springs can be used in an installation position. Whether or not eternal forces act on them when at rest is of no consequence. ll FIBRO Gas Springs meet the requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC. The Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) has been ratified b the European Parliament and the Council of Europe. The requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive came into force throughout the EC on 29 Ma 02. The directive defines pressure equipment as vessels, pipework, safet devices and pressure accessories. In terms of the Directive a vessel is a casing which is designed and manufactured to contain fluids under pressure. It follows from this definition that nitrogen gas springs of all sizes are deemed to be pressure vessels and must in this respect compl with the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) from 29 Ma 02. 5 Gas Springs Maintenance FIBRO Gas Springs were disigned for maintenance free continual operation. It is recommended to oil the piston rod lightl from time to time. Guide- and sealing elements can be echanged easil and epediciousl. The are available as a kit. Each kit comes with detailed instructions for maintenance of FIBRO Gas Springs. Warning FIBRO Gas Springs ma be charged onl with commercial Grade 5.0 nitrogen gas. ccessories The accessories range for Gas Springs comprises fastening devices, chargeand control units, screw connections for these, and connecting lines for compound installations. FIBRO Gas Springs for mbient Temperatures of up to 180 C Tooling used in the Rubber- and Plastic Industries often is eposed to working tempe ratures in ecess fo 100 C values also reached in certain other manufacturing sectors. FIBRO has developed gas springs that can stand up to temperatures of 180 C a world first for such conditions. This temperature rating is to be understood as follows: where little heat is generated inside the gas spring because of light working conditions, the eternal (ambient) temperature can be 180 C ma. where gas spring operating conditions are mechanicall severe and internal heat generation is considerable, ambient temperature should not eceed 100 to 1 C. The carge pressure for this series is limited to 1 bar, owing to the thermal epansion of the nitrogen. This has no influence on the Pressure Rise Factor which therefore remains the same. The work capacit (life span) is at this stage approimatel % smaller than that of conventional Gas Springs. Warning Signs These are available on request. The signs should be affied near the springs in as prominent a position as possible. FIBRO WRNING This tool is equipped with Gas Springs with a ma. pressure of 150 or 180 bar, depending on spring tpe. 6 Mounting Directions for Gas Springs Mounting Eamples Below are the various gas spring mounting possibilities, which differ from model to model. F104
7 Mounting Directions for Gas Springs To achieve the best possible service-life and safet from the gas spring, the directions below must be followed. Mounting instructions Secure the gas spring to the tool/machine whenever possible, using the threaded hole(s) in the base of the gas spring or a suitable flange. Never eceed the maimum torque values for the threads in the base of the gas spring: (M6 = 10 Nm; M8 = 24 Nm; M10 = 45 Nm; M12 = 80 Nm) The threaded hole in the piston rod top should not be used for mounting purposes. It is onl to be used when servicing the gas spring. Do not use the gas spring in such a wa that the piston rod is realised freel from its compressed position, as this could cause internal damage to the gas spring. Make sure the gas spring is mounted parallel to the direction of the compression. Ensure the contact surface of the piston rod top is perpendicular to the direction of the compression and is sufficientl hardened. The gas spring should not be subjected to the side loads. Protect the piston rod against mechanical damage and contact with fluids. We do not recommend the last 5 mm or 10 % of the nominal be utilised. The maimum charging pressure (at C) must not be eceeded as it ma effect the safet of the product. Eceeding the gas spring s recommended operating temperature will shorten the service-life of the gas spring. The entire contact surface of the piston rod / piston should be used. Do not remove bottom from spring until all gas pressure has been discharged. F105
8 FIBRO Gas Springs The Safer Choice t FIBRO, safet has alwas been a top priorit. Below is what we do to help ou provide a safer working environment. FIBRO Safet Features dvice to Gas Spring Buers Ecessive Return Speed Protection Sstem Designed for controlled gas venting through piston rods with integral safet stops and speciall designed guides. Ecessive Return Speed -- + Safet should have alwas be a top priorit. Therefore, we believe gas springs for metal forming tools should (unless the maimum allowable pressure PS is less than or equal to 0.5 bar) be ordered with the following safet requirements: 1) Piston rods with an integral safet stop. 2) Designed, produced and tested according to Pressure Equipment Directive, PED 97/23/EC for a minimum of full ccles*: at highest allowed charging pressure at highest allowed running temperature for all specified mounting methods** ** including top mount, Tpe C Flange Mounts, according to ISO Please Note: Unless the maimum pressure is less than or equal to 0.5 bar, all gas springs produced, sold, installed and/or used within the EU should be designed, produced and tested in accordance with PED 97/23/EC. Over-Pressure Protection Sstem Pressure Vessel pproval FIBRO Over-Pressure Protection Sstem is designed to vent ecessive gas pressure in a controlled manner. Over-Pressure Condition FIBRO Gas Springs are designed, produced and tested according to PED 97/23/EC for full ccles* at the highest allowed charging pressure, the highest allowed running temperature, and for all specified mounting methods. Over-Stroke Protection Sstem * unless other value stated on the springs FIBRO has a developed unique Sstem. The clinder wall is designed to deform in a predefined wa, venting the internal gas pressure in a controlled manner. Over-Pressure Condition Please note!!! The safet features mentioned here have not been realized for all FIBRO gas springs to date. B consulting the respective data sheets, please make certain ou have the accurate safet standard of the gas spring available that ou are interested in; otherwise, direct our inquir to FIBRO GmbH.
