6 AZ License Requirements Before you can get your AZ license and find a truck driving job in Ontario, you need to meet these AZ license requirements... A valid G class driver s license. OSSD grade 12 diploma (or higher), or proof of Grade 10 English equivalency, or TOWES test. A driver s abstract - This is a 3-year search of your driving record. It s available through the Ministry of Transportation for $12. Click here to order your abstract online. Criminal record search - You may obtain a criminal record search from your local police organization. You will need two pieces of identification with you to apply, and the cost is $30. Click here for more information on obtaining a criminal record check in the Waterloo Region Mechanical aptitude test - To register for the AZ Licensing, you are required to pass a mechanical aptitude test. There is no charge for this test. Written and road test fee of $120. This fee covers your written exams for both the Class A or Class D test and the Drive Test Centre, as well as the road test. Other requirements you ll need to meet... You must be of legal age. In Ontario, you must be 18 years old or older to obtain an AZ license, however many trucking companies need drivers to enter the United States. In the U.S., the minimum age is 21. You must meet Ontario and U.S. medical requirements. Fees vary from $50 - $150. Check with your doctor to confirm the fees and make an appointment for your medical testing. 7 You must have a Canadian passport or U.S. travel visa which is required by many employers. You will also be required to obtain a FAST card by most carriers for employment. In-Class Theory (65 Hours) The AZ course starts with 65-hours of classroom instruction. The course is taught experts in the field of transport training, and includes the following topics: Safety & Professionalism in the industry. Defensive Driving/ Adverse Conditions. 8 In-Yard Training (25 Hours) This part of the course is where you start getting your hands on the trucks. For 25 hours you will be learning how to put the classroom/theory section into practice. The following are some of the topics you will be covering. Pre-Trip Inspection/Circle Check Air Brake Inspections Coupling/Uncoupling Procedures Preventative Maintenance In Cab Inspections Weight Distribution/Sliding Trailer Axels In-Vehicle Training (55 Hours) Here s where the rubber meets the road. For your in-vehicle training, you receive 55 hours of personal instruction time behind the wheel, spread out over approximately 6-weeks. You ll learn how to... Double clutch a multi-gear transmission; Perform turns in light traffic; Parallel park like a pro; Drive comfortably on both the highway as well as in the city; Stop and start on both an incline and decline. Once you feel more confident, you ll be shown how to...

9 Make elegant turns in heavy traffic Pass and overtake slower vehicles Perform gear recovery techniques with precision And after all that, we ll make sure you know how to... Prepare and pass a company road test Prepare and pass a Drive Test road test All the while, you'll be receiving a running commentary by your trainer to help comfort you and learn more quickly. To make your training as real life as possible, all trailers carry various levels of weight to show you how shifting, stopping and starting procedures change under differing load conditions. To ensure your truck training course is a safe one, all trucks are equipped with dual braking system on the instructor s side for tractor and trailer brakes. You will be nervous! Driving a big rig is like nothing you've driven before. Being nervous is natural, but each day you et a report on how you're progressing. Soon, those jitters will be a thing of the past.

10 The Art of Backing Up (24 Hours) Driving a truck forward is important, of course. But the real money is being able to quickly and skillfully back that truck and trailer up to the loading dock, load or unload the trailer and get back on the road. In addition to the 55 hours of in-truck instruction, you receive 24-hours dedicated to the art of backing up. By the time your training is done, you ll be able to back that big rig up in a nice straight line, between trailers and bring it to a graceful stop at the loading dock. Yard-work Practice (30 Hours) The one thing that sets a pro apart from amateurs is their mastery of the basics. During the yard-work practice portion of the course, you will spend a minimum of 30-hours mastering the pre-trip inspection, and your coupling and uncoupling procedures - daily inspections required by every driver before embarking on a trip, no matter the distance.

11 Forklift Training (9 Hours) Truck driving is a profession built on schedules. Nothing throws a schedule off like having to wait for someone to load or unload a shipment because you don t know how to operate a forklift. After our 9-hour Forklift Certification Course, you ll have the knowledge and the skill to load and unload your own truck, using a counterbalanced propane powered forklift, should the need arise. You ll never have to rely on someone else to keep you on time. And... Even if someone else is operating the forklift to load your truck, you ll be able to tell if someone else is loading your truck improperly. Knowing how to spot a poor loading job will help you avoid fines for being overweight, and keep your cargo from shifting while driving. Cargo that shifts can result in costly damage, and wasted time unloading. On completion of the forklift training, you receive both a wallet-sized certificate to keep with you at all times, as well as a wall-sized certificate to proudly display at home or in the office.

12 First-Aid and Fire Extinguisher Training (4 Hours) While other Ontario truck driving schools may make you take your first-aid certification and fire extinguisher training at another institution, we make it part of our curriculum. Just another example of how we go beyond the basics of AZ license instruction. No-Wait Road Test Tri-County Training has reserved convenient times with the Drive Test Centre in Kitchener for you to complete your road test without having to wait. Once our instructors feel confident of your ability to pass the test, we'll reserve the road test for you. If your first attempt is unsuccessful, Tri-County will arrange another test and pay for Drive Test's re-test fee. Company Road Test Of course, passing your road test with the MTO is important. It gets you in the game, but once that's done, you have another critical test of your skills and ability... The company road test. This test is for all the marbles. It determines whether or not you get the job.
