2 Every recycling program goes through 3 stages. Initial pilot program Intermediate program/sustained pilot program. Part of solid waste management plan that is integrated into daily campus operations.

3 Collection and transfer considerations On-campus or outsourced Campus crews do both collection and transfer. Outsourced hauler does both collection and transfer. Campus crews do collection and bring to on-campus consolidation point from which outsourced hauler transfers to market.

4 Things to consider if campus staff or students t doing collections Larger trucks may require commerciallylicensed driver. Is your route large enough to justify a dedicated truck, or do you need a truck that can perform multiple functions? How far are you from the mill that will ultimately take your stuff? How far from intermediate processors?

5 Maintenance considerations Who will maintain and repair equipment? If campus crews, what is the opportunity cost of pulling them off of other maintenance projects. If outsourced, what is cost? Are there local or regional folk who can maintain the equipment? What is the expected down time for maintenance and repairs? What is the backup pplan during downtime?

6 Other considerations Worker safety considerations. What are installation costs for new equipment? Do you have existing infrastructure or will all that have to be brought to a site? Mess and aesthetic concerns. Access around campus.

7 Custom Mini Recycling Truck at Amherst & Smith Colleges

8 Collection crews wheel Toter caster cart barrels from central consolidation sites in each building. These caster carts allow us to wheel the Toter without tipping it back onto the handtruck wheels.

9 Outside, the entire lb bin full of paper is emptied hydraulically into the truck in less than 60 seconds with no manual lifting or tipping.

10 When compared to transporting carts in a box truck, one advantage of this system is that you utilize the entire capacity of the truck. With a box truck, there is a lot of unfilled airspace in the box.

11 The truck full of recyclables is brought to a nearby transfer facility or on-campus consolidation area. Once there, the contents of the truck are dumped all at once into a roll-off bin. That roll-off is then hauled to market by a private waste hauler.
