1 STANDARD LEVEL 2 DEFENSIVE Standard Firefighter Training I Minimum Equipment List The NWT has established recommended operational service levels which may be further broken down into sections to fit local capacity. As such, the full effect of recognized equipment standards cannot be realized in any one service level or section. Although recommended equipment has been drawn from these NFPA and CSA standards, the NWT has phased in the requirements for the standards into each service level or section thereof to meet the community s capacity and/or safety requirements.

2 Protective coats; Trousers; Coveralls; Helmets; Gloves; Footwear; and Hoods In accordance to NPFA Standards Section 7.1 The fire department shall provide each member with protective ensembles, ensemble elements, and protective equipment designed to provide protection from hazards to which the member is likely to be exposed and that is suitable for the tasks the member is expected to perform. This standard shall specify the selection, care, and maintenance requirements for structural firefighting protective ensembles and the individual ensemble elements that include garments, helmets, gloves, footwear, and interface components that are compliant with NFPA 1971, Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting. Protective garment elements shall have at least the applicable design requirements specified in this section where inspected and evaluated by the certification organization as specified of NFPA Standards 1971, Chapter 4 Section 4.3, Inspection and Testing Garments shall consist of a composite of an outer shell, moisture barrier, and thermal barrier. 1

5 Small communities in the NWT do not possess municipal infrastructure, such as hydrants, and are challenged with maintaining a sustainable water supply for firefighting. One option available to assist with this reality are tanker shuttles. This is accomplished through modification of existing community tankers to include a dump valve and the purchase of porta-tanks to support firefighting efforts. The concept is that a porta-tank is set up for the fire truck to draft from, while the tanker shuttles water back and forth from their filling site. This allows the tanker travel time while the port-tank provides us water supply for firefighting. This water delivery concept provides additional safety for firefighters and residents. The following demonstrate its application; 4
