SECTION 1 HYDRAULICALLY OPERATED MODEL

INTRODUCTION As a new owner and/or operator of the Geith Auto-Lock Quick Hitch, we would recommend that you take the time to read this operator guide carefully before commencing work. The Geith Auto-Lock Quick Hitch brings major advancements in safety to the construction attachment industry. It demonstrates Geiths ongoing commitment to the development of safe and productive work tools that meet and surpass our customers requirements. The Geith Auto-Lock Quick Hitch has been developed with safety of use as a primary design requirement and incorporates the unique Geith AutoLock System. In common with all Geith attachments it is manufactured to the highest quality and backed up with the service only Geith provides. Follow the instructions contained in this book carefully to ensure correct, safe and trouble free operation. We recommend that the Hydraulic Quick Hitch be installed and fitted by trained and experienced Hydraulic Fitters only. Note: The Quick Hitch Hydraulic ram is fitted with a non-return pilot operated check valve, to prevent accidental attachment release in the event of a hose failure. USER GUIDE The Geith Quick Hitch is designed for use on hydraulic excavators, to facilitate the changing over of buckets and various attachments and so increase the productivity of the machine. If using the Quick Hitch in conjunction with a rock hammer it is imperative that the hammer is used only as recommended by the manufacturers i.e. it must not be used as a lever, as this will undoubtably cause damage to the hammer and accelerate the rate of wear and tear on the Quick Hitch. Should prolonged use in these circumstances be envisaged, we would recommend that the Quick Hitch be removed and the rock hammer be fitted directly to the excavator. 1

INSTALLATION Ensure that only original machine pins are used to attach the quick hitch to the excavator. Fit O ring seals to the inside of Quick hitch bushings. If applicable. Follow the guidelines shown on pages 10 and 11 for fitting and connecting the Quick Hitch Hydraulic System and Electrical Control. The operating control panel is designed to be fitted to the inside face of the cab side window panel on the operators right hand side. Simply remove the backing from the fixing pads or apply fixant to back of box (whichever is supplied). Position box on window panel and press firmly into place. Locate accompanying instruction stickers around panel as shown. INSTRUCTION STICKER SURROUND REMOVE ADHESIVE BACKING We recommend that the Hydraulic Quick Hitch be installed and fitted by trained and experienced Hydraulic Fitters only. ENGAGING ATTACHMENT Before attempting to pick up a bucket or attachment with the Quick Hitch. a) Check that correct pins have been fitted securely to attachment. b) Ensure that all personnel are standing clear of Quick Hitch machine swing radius and any unstable attachments. c) Check that attachment pin centres etc. conforms to O.E.M. specification. d) Ensure Quick Hitch Ram is fully instroked and that AutoLock Mechanism is in the up/open position. Otherwise the Quick Hitch will not be able to engage attachment pins. 2

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS CONNECTING AN ATTACHMENT 1. On the Quick Hitch operation control panel press the system ON button and then press button A. Note: Button A must be pressed within five seconds of pressing the ON button or the system will not operate. If this occurs press the ON / OFF button to the OFF position to reset.then start the sequence again. See fig. 2 and fig. 3. When button A is pressed outstroke the bucket ram fully to crowd the quick hitch inwards.this will enable the auto lock to open fully. 2. When the Auto-Lock is open, crowd the Quick Hitch to the open digging position and lower the Quick Hitch hooks down onto the front pin. Crowd the Quick Hitch around until the Quick Hitch contacts the bucket back pin and raise the bucket off the ground while continuing to crowd the Quick Hitch fully inwards to the closed position. See fig. 4 and fig. 5. AUTO LOCK ENGAGED 3

3. With the Quick Hitch crowded fully inwards press the ON/OFF button on the control panel to the OFF position while continuing to crowd the Quick Hitch inwards.the Auto-Lock will close around the attachment pin (This will be visible from the operator position in the cab. See fig. 6).While the rear pin engaging wedge will lock the back pin into position. See fig. 5. At this point it is most important to crowd out the Quick Hitch and shake the attachment vigorously to ensure the attachment is secured to the Quick Hitch. See fig. 7. If the Auto-Lock is not visibly in position in front of the attachment pin then the Quick Hitch must not be operated to carry out work.the excavator should be switched off and the Quick Hitch should be examined for signs of damage. Contact your supplier, or Geith International immediately should you require assistance. If the Auto Lock is engaged and the attachment is secured safely to the Quick Hitch it is safe to operate the attachment to carry out the intended work. RELEASING AN ATTACHMENT: 1. With Quick Hitch and attachment at ground level, position attachment in a curled position with hooks pointing upwards as per fig Ensure that all personnel are standing clear of quick hitch and machine swing radius. 4

3. To enable the Quick Hitch Control system to operate you must first crowd the Quick Hitch fully inwards so that a pressure is built up in the Quick Hitch Hydraulic control valve from the outstroke of the bucket digging/crowd cylinder.when the Quick Hitch is fully crowded inwards, press the control panel ON/OFF switch to the ON position.then press the button on the control panel marked A while continuing to operate the crowd lever to maintain the Quick Hitch in the crowded in position. Note: Button A must be pressed within five seconds of pressing the ON button or the system will not operate. If this occurs press the ON / OFF button to the OFF position to reset.then start the sequence again. See fig. 9. and fig. 10. Continue to crowd the Quick Hitch inwards until the AutoLock has fully opened. 5

4. Lower the attachment to the ground and release it from the Quick Hitch by crowding the Quick Hitch outwards away from attachment pins. See fig. 11 and fig You should now be free to raise Quick Hitch up and clear of attachment ready to pick up other attachment as necessary. 6

MAINTENANCE GUIDE Extreme care must be taken when carrying out maintenance procedures on the Quick Hitch. On Hydraulic models especially, never place hands on or into the Quick Hitch (fig. 13) before first ensuring that the Hydraulic Circuit is de-activated.there may be some latent oil pressure remaining in the system so extreme caution is recommended when replacing or repairing Hydraulic hoses or fittings. The Quick Hitch may not be modified. Any modification will void warranty and may compromise safety. Keep this instruction manual for future needs. Contact supplier if you have any problems (see back of book for contact information). - Check Auto-Lock safety device is fully functional and working correctly (includes springs, clips, ram). - Clean out caked dirt and debris from around Auto-Lock device (again includes springs, clips, ram) - Clean out caked dirt and debris from around sliding plate regularly. (Use slots in back plate for access). - Clean out caked dirt and debris from front hooks regularly. - Check for undue wear on Quick Hitch Hooks - Check sliding plate assembly for signs of excessive wear and replace if necessary. - Check that attachment or bucket pins are not unduly worn. - Check for oil leaks from cylinder and hose connections and replace any seals or damaged fittings as necessary. - Check for worn or damaged hoses and replace as necessary. - Ensure all locking pins and retaining pins are in good order. Replace if necessary. - Grease all sliding parts regularly. - Ensure that there is adequate tension in the Auto-Lock tension springs for them to be retained while in the unloaded state. 7

SAFE WORKING LOAD GUIDANCE NOTES Whereas the safe working load for the Quick Hitch is marked on the product information CE Badge the operator must refer to the safe working load tables for the Hydraulic Excavator when carrying out lifting operations. Contact the excavator manufacturer or an approved dealer for details of safe working loads for your particular machine model. ONLY USE D SHACKLE IN LIFT EYE * Refer to Excavator Safe Working Load Tables. 8

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION PROCEDURE Ensure that all components relevant to installing the quick hitch are present before starting.this can be done by laying all components supplied, out on a clean workbench and using the check-list supplied. The first step is to connect up the electrical circuit, while you are free from oil and dirt. Determine a suitable location in the cab for the control box (6) and the instruction sticker (18), ensuring not to create a blind spot for the driver. Also contained within the document wallet will be two warning stickers, a tip-radius warning (19) and a hand warning (20), these warning stickers should also be placed in the cab in full view of the operator, again making sure not to obstruct his view or cover any of the machines original stickers. Locate a suitable 12/24V fused appliance, such as a cigarette lighter. Establish which of the wires is the positive, using a DC tester. Connect the electrical box into the existing circuit as shown in drawing No If electrical conduit is supplied, use this to protect the two core solenoid wire. Connect the two-core wire supplied as shown, and run it down though the engine compartment to where the solenoid valve (5) will be fitted. With the control box fully connected, ensure that all wiring is fully secured so that no wire is left that the driver may snag and damage the connections. Using the tie wraps (21) supplied secure the two-core wire (13) or conduit as the case may be, the entire way along to the existing wiring in the engine compartment. 9

10

QH & BOOM HOSE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE With the electrical circuit complete and fully secured, proceed to connect the wire guarded quick hitch hoses (2) to the quick hitch as shown in drawing no.: Note:Tighten banjo bolts, with the hoses perpendicular to the block. Fit quick hitch to the end of the dipper arm using the machines original pins and not those supplied with the hitch. WARNING: Before tacking on any hose clamps, the machines battery must be disconnected or the isolator switch engaged. To determine the position of the first clamp, fully outstroke the bucket cylinder. As a general rule the first hose clamp is positioned just below the link hinge pin, where the idler link and dipper intersect, as shown in drawing no.: A With the position determined, use a sharp tool to remove just enough paint to weld on the clamp. Tack-weld the first clamp in position and reconnect the battery. With the bucket cylinder in the out stroked position snip the wire guard where it crosses the hose clamp. Leave a little slack in the hose clamp with the hoses in position, and operate the bucket cylinder through a full operation to ensure that there is no binding or strain on either hose. Once happy that the hoses are not under any stress tighten the two banjo fittings at the hitch cylinder. With the first clamp in the correct position you can now position the second clamp, close to the end of the quick hitch jumper hoses (2). Disconnect the battery for a second time and weld both clamps fully in position.when the weld is cooled, remove any slag and dirt using a wire brush. Paint the welded area with OEM paint to prevent rusting and for esthetic purposes. In-stroke the bucket cylinder ram fully and rest the hitch on the ground. Connect the dipper hoses (1) to the quick hitch hoses (2) as shown in dwg. No.: Run the dipper hoses along the existing machine hoses, securing them every 300mm/12 to 600mm/24 with the tie wraps supplied. 11

CONTROL SYSTEM INSTALLATION PROCEDURE With the dipper hoses fully secured all the way down to the engine compartment, it is now time to fit the solenoid valve (5). With all fittings fitted to the solenoid valve as shown in drawing no: A, you must determine a suitable position in the engine compartment. When choosing a location, ensure that the connecting hoses will reach their destination. Do not mount the solenoid valve either on the floor of the machine or directly above electrical components as possible oil leaks from the hydraulic joints may cause damage to the electrics. Mount the valve using the nuts/bolts supplied. With the valve securely mounted the two dipper hoses (1) can be attached to their relevant ports A and B. The next connection to be made is from port T to the machines tank reservoir. Before removing any of the machines hydraulic fittings you MUST relieve the pressure in the tank. To get a return to the tank, usually involves disconnecting an existing return line and adding in a T -piece, as shown on drawing no.: A. NOTE: The return to the tank resevoir may not be a T-Piece as shown on drawing number A. The fitting supplied will return to the tank the most convenient way and may not be the same for all machines.to determine the fitting required, refer to the kit list supplied and determine what fitting has been supplied to facilitate this connection. Knowing which fitting is supplied it can then be determined where the connection can be made. Using the first of the 1.5m hoses (3) the return line can then be connected from the T -piece to the T port of the valve. NOTE: In some instances it may be preferable to have the system return through an external filtration system, to decrease the likelihood of oil contamination caused by the quick hitch system failing. With the return line secured, the pump connection can be made. The pump supply line is usually taken from a test port on the operating pump, and so is 12

usually connected using a straight adaptor, this is then connected to the P port of the solenoid valve, using the pump supply line (3). The pump supply line must be connected, in the arrangement detailed on drawing no.: A, with the restrictor (11) on the pump side of the hose and the in-line check valve (12) on the solenoid side. NOTE: Some customers may request an additional t-piece so they can retain the test port option. WARNING: Do not connect into the servo pump test port as this will not give you adequate pressure for the system and so the hitch will not work to its full potential. With four out of the five hoses connected, the final connection is from the rear of the bucket crowd cylinder (piston side) to the X port of the solenoid valve. To determine the correct connection to tap into follow the hose coming from the rear of the bucket crowd cylinder all the way to the back of the boom. This connection will either be, a thread and nut configuration, or on some larger machines, will be a flange fitting. Making sure that the dipper is resting fully on the ground and the cylinder is fully in-stroked, open the Bucket crowd cylinder coupling, at the base of the boom. Although there is very little oil left in the cylinder, it is very important to have a container ready to collect any hydraulic oil, which may spill from the disconnected hoses. Insert the t-piece/flange, as the case may be, and tighten fully. It is very important to clean up any oil spilt during the installation of this connection, as spilt oil on the engine covers will represent a safety hazard. For flange arrangement see drawing no.: A. Using the tie-wraps supplied secure all hoses added, to the existing machine hoses. This is done to prevent possible wear of the hoses due to constant vibrations. With this final fitting in place connect the bucket t-piece to port X of the solenoid valve using the 3m pipe (2). 13

FINISH AND TEST PROCEDURE Now that the hydraulic and electrical circuits are both complete, do one final check to ensure that all fittings are tight and secure. Ensure that hoses are not under any strain and if the hose happens to be too long make sure to leave them coiled up tidily so they do not get damaged or interfere with anything in the engine compartment. Now that the circuit is complete and double checked, the next step is to run a test procedure to determine if it operates correctly. To do this, operate the hitch using the control panel as described on the instruction sticker no.: (18). Assuming that the circuit operates correctly, operate the hitch through its full rotation to ensure that there is both enough slack in the hoses and that there is enough room between the link and the dipper for the hoses to feed back up the dipper. It is very important that the hoses do not come under any stresses during the rotation as this will eventually cause failure. With the system operating correctly, revisit all added components and inspect for leakages, cleaning all excess oil spilt as you go. Now that the system is fully installed, instruct the driver/customer on the operation of the hitch and its safety feature. When the customer is satisfied with both the operation of the hitch and with the cleanliness of his machine, the final job is to complete the Geith QR58 form supplied in the document wallet and to fax it for invoicing purposes to: Michael Loughern

See fig. 14 and fig. 15. FIG. 14 FIG Attach the drive bar supplied with the Manual Auto-Lock Quick Hitch to the hexagonal cyclinder drive shaft through the hole in the back plate and proceed to tighten. At initial tightening the Auto-Lock clasp will close over the front pin thus securing the attachment to the Quick-Hitch. Continuous tightening of the bar will engage the link pin engaging slide under the attachment link pin. 25

3. Continue to tighten the drive bar until the internal compression springs have bottomed out and no further tightening is possible. Warning: Do not extend drive bar when tightening as over-tightening may result in difficulty releasing the atttachment. 4. Remove the drive bar and store in excavator cab for reuse when next changing attachment. At this point it is most important to crowd out the Quick Hitch and shake the attachment vigorously to ensure the attachment is secured to the Quick Hitch. See fig. 18. If the Auto-Lock is not visibly in position in front of the attachment pin then the Quick Hitch must not be operated to carry out work.the excavator should be switched off and the Quick Hitch should be examined for signs of damage. Contact your supplier, or Geith International immediately should you require assistance. FIG. 18 If the Auto Lock is engaged and the attachment is secured safely to the Quick Hitch it is safe to operate the attachment to carry out the intended work. RELEASING AN ATTACHMENT: 1. With Quick Hitch and attachment at ground level, position attachment in a slightly curled position with hooks pointing upwards as per (see fig. 19) so as to prevent attachment from sliding out of Quick Hitch when released. 2. Ensure that all personnel are standing clear of quick hitch and machine swing radius. 26

3. Obtain the drive bar supplied with manual autolock Quick Hitch and connect it to the cylinder drive shaft through the hole in the Quick Hitch back plate.to release the attachment you initially need to tighten the cylinder slightly. this is dne by turning the drive bar in a clock-wise direction, this releases the ratchet mechanism which is holding the cylinder in position.with the ratchet released turn the drive bar anti-clockwise to release the attachment. At initial loosening the back pin lock wedge will release the attachment back pin. See fig. 19. Continued loosening will open the auto-lock from over the front pin. Remove drive bar from the quick hitch.the attachment can now be released from the Quick Hitch. See fig Lower the attachment to the ground and release it from the Quick Hitch by crowding the Quick Hitch outwards away from attachment pins. See fig You should now be free to raise Quick Hitch up and clear of attachment ready to pick up other attachment as necessary. 27 FIG. 20
