7 Chip Seal Introduction What is a Chip Seal? A chipseal is a membrane of asphalt binder that is sprayed evenly with a distributor truck followed by a chip spreader which places a single layer of uniform sized aggregate on top of the binder.

8 Chipseal uses Pavement Maintenance used on an existing pavement to stop the oxidation process and to improve skid resistance. Low Volume Gravel Roads most often a double chipseal is used on a gravel road to stop dust emission and to reduce frequent maintenance most commonly found on gravel roads.

Budget Availability Governmental agencies are experiencing budget short falls at alarming rates. Public Demand The general public only knows that taxes continue to rise, yet they see less.

166 Buying Time Chipseals have been used with great success on pavements in fair to good condition for several decades. The question is, can a chipseal be used on badly deteriorated pavement structures to buy time? What about a gravel road, can a chipseal provide a surface that will last longer than routine grading or some sort of dust palliative such as Mag Chloride?

178 This is a double lift with the only chips available at the time and the road in the left picture was experiencing severe block cracking. Funds were limited. It was decided that something had to be done to stop moisture penetration. The entity elected to double chip with a fog seal. Its still holding up!
