3 Why do I stand before you The room for inconsistency at the most common brake event, which is at low brake pressures, is a huge disadvantage to road safety and vehicle owners As haulers we demand to be assured that our vehicles are able to deliver the expected brake performance at any time Is this too much to ask? - it seems, at present state!

4 Present situation Too frequent brake performance rejections at PTI and at roadside-checks Uncertainty regarding brake performance when demanded Brake performance often not maintained throughout lining life Not worn out brake pads and linings often disposed due to sleeping and glazed lining material Brake maintenance costs too high

5 Studies and observations Nordic Road Association, Vehicles and Transport Committee (NVF), brake study recommends focus on better distribution of brake forces between truck and trailer International Road Transport Union (IRU) study found technical failures in 5.3% of all main causes for traffic accidents with trucks queue accidents accounted for 20.6 per cent of all accidents Danish study found 38% weak brakes on trailers at roadside inspections and poor brake compatibility

6 Objektive To counteract sleeping or overloaded brakes - each individual wheel brake should: take its part of everyday brake events brake in relation to actual axle-load start developing brake force simultaneously Use it or loose it

8 In short HGV wheel brakes are sensitive to use and to environment Each HGV wheel brake handles up to 15 times more energy compared to passenger car brakes HGV brakes are conditioned at everyday low demand In event of emergency demand only well conditioned brakes will perform

9 In short Well performing HGV brakes are a prerequisite to function of: Automatic Emergency Brake System (AEBS) Stability Control and Roll-Over Control Systems (ESC) Adaptive and Advanced Cruise Control Systems (ACC) Compatibility at low pressures is essential to assure long term performance!

18 Present situation At the 72nd GRRF meeting in UN-ECE Geneva the industry came forward with some concerns is there still a problem? does old vehicles fit in with the suggested amendments? is it possible to operate with the suggested narrow corridors? will the warning lamp (CFC) light up all the time, and thereby loose the respect from the driver? a long series of detailed technical and constructive concerns

19 The work goes on Upcoming informal meeting with the UNECE-experts in June 2012: BRAKING COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN TRUCKS AND TRAILERS meeting is hosted by IRU with Denmark as chairman and secretary we very much hope to get some suggestions from the industry how to move on and to get some constructive suggestions and solutions to counteract with the problems we face in everyday life

20 Conclusion The common DK, NVF and IRU proposal will in our opinion bring an important step towards solving the long standing challenge regarding which vehicle truck or trailer should take the heaviest brake load The room for inconsistency is of huge disadvantage in terms of road safety The uncertainty for vehicle owners regarding brake performance in between PTI s and can be mitigated by the presented proposal
