4 FAN SHROUD INSTALL Keep your classic cool with a new Danchuk Made in the U. Our tech article for this issue of the Danchuk Update features a brand new product hot off the stamping machine.metal fan shrouds. We have had our ABS shroud for years, but customers keep asking when we are going to have one they can paint to match their engine compartment or chrome! Well, wonder no more they are here and they are beautiful if we do say so ourselves. Follow along as we show you how to install one of these beauties in your ride You will need: 1/2" and 7/16" Open End, Box or Combination Wrench 3/8" Drive Ratchet 1/2" and 7/16" Sockets Assorted 3/8" Drive Extensions Flat Blade Screwdriver (or a suitable set of pliers to remove the original style hose clamps) A container to drain the coolant out of your radiator into for reuse or enough coolant to fill your radiator. Flare nut wrench set for cooler lines if your car has an automatic transmission. 17" to 17-1/2" flex fan and appropriate spacer to space your fan half way in and half way out of your installed fan shroud. A second pair of hands to help keep things in place during the installation. There are three part numbers for the new shrouds. #16625, for V-8 or 6-cylinder radiators mounted in a 6-cylinder core support, #16626 for V-8 radiators mounted in a V-8 core support and #16627 which is for V-8 radiators mounted in the 6 cylinder position (mounted between the grille and outside of the core support) using our #11236 conversion brackets for a V-8 core support. We will be covering all three installations here. Steps 1-4 are the same for any installation and the rest are specific on which fan shroud you are installing let s begin. Note: If you have already installed our #11236 conversion brackets and moved your V-8 radiator to the 6-cylinder position please go to step 5 under # Remove the radiator cap. This will allow the coolant to drain easily from the radiator. Place your container under the radiator petcock hose that runs through the front filler panel. Turn the petcock, which is located in front of the bottom tank of the radiator on the passenger side counter clockwise to open it. Drain the coolant from the radiator. (Pics 1 and 2) 2. W h e n the radiator i s e m p t y, u s e y o u r screwdriver or pliers to loosen the r a d i a t o r hose clamps. Move them d o w n t h e hose towards the engine so they are not attached to the hose bung. Grasp the hoses; a n d w i t h a t w i s t i n g m o t i o n, Loosen and remove them f r o m t h e radiator and position them o u t o f t h e way. It is not n e c e s s a r y t o r e m o ve t h e m f ro m the engine. (If the hoses are stuck to the hose bung you may have to employ other tactics to remove them from the radiator.) (Pics ) 3. If you have an automatic transmission a n d a r e u s i n g t h e transmission o i l c o o l e r located in the radiator, use your flare nut w r e n c h t o remove the cooler lines f r o m t h e bottom of the radiator and move out of the way. (Pics 7-8) If you are working on a car with the radiator in the 6 cylinder position or are installing the conversion brackets to move your radiator to the 6 cylinder position you may, at this time, choose to remove the hood latch plate and bracket from the grille support bar. It is not necessary, but doing so you will give yourself much needed clearance when removing and installing the radiator making the risk of damaging the fins substantially less. To do this, remove the bolts on the top of the latch plate with your 3/8" ratchet and 1/2" socket (a 1/2" wrench will work too). Remove the latch plate and then, using your 7/16" wrench, remove the bolts that attach the bracket and remove it. This step is NOT necessary when doing this job on a car with the radiator in the V-8 position. You also may want to take some cardboard, as we did, and tape it in front of the radiator cooling fins to prevent damage. 4. Remove the radiator by locating the 3 screws on each side, s i x i n a l l, and remove them using y o u r 3 / 8 " ratchet and 1/2" socket. Be careful to support the radiator while r e m o v i n g the bolts so it does not slide down or forward, which could damage the fins. When you have all the screws removed, carefully remove the radiator from the car by pulling it upwards and away. Be careful, the fins on the radiator are delicate, so do your best to keep them from contacting anything on the way out. Set 4 (800)

5 S.A. Metal Fan Shroud... learn how-to install it here! the radiator someplace safe so it w o n t g e t d a m a g e d. (Pics ) These fan shrouds are designed for use with a 17" or 17-1/2" diameter fan. We recommend at least a 6 blade flex fan be used for maximum airflow but you can use the original 4 blade fan if you wish. The fan blades need to be positioned half way in, and half way out of the fan shroud opening so you will need to measure this distance for your application and purchase the appropriate length fan spacer to install between the water pump and fan. Various length spacers can be purchased at most auto part stores in a kit with the proper length bolts for installation. V-8 core support applications will probably be similar to the original spacer and 6 cylinder core support applications will need a spacer approximately 1-1/2" long, but you will need to check that the fan is properly positioned to gain maximum benefit from the shroud. Also, if you are using stock front motor mounts and transmission mounts you need to check that they are not worn and in need of replacement. Proper positioning of the engine in the mounts assures that the fan blade is properly positioned in the fan shroud. If your engine has dropped due to worn mounts you could damage the shroud if the fan makes contact with the bottom opening. You don t have much space to work with here so it is important things are where they need to be. (Pic 14) The remainder of this article is part number specific. #16625 V8 using 6 Cylinder Core Support installation 5. Remove the fan assembly from the water pump. (Pic 15) 6. Once you have the fan r e m o v e d s l i d e t h e radiator back in position. Line up the m o u n t i n g h o l e s a n d s l i d e t h e shroud brackets between the core support and the radiator mounting brackets. Install the mounting bolts and nuts. Leave them a little loose for adjustment later. (Pic 16-17) 7. Reinstall the lower radiator hose and transmission cooler lines. These are difficult to install once the shroud is in place. 8. Slide the fan shroud into place on the brackets. Install the fan assembly on the water pump. Make sure that the fan blades are half way in and half way out of the fan shroud opening. If this is not the case you will have to refigure the length of the spacer you are using to get proper a l i g n m e n t. You may have to move the shroud a little to get the fan in place, take your time so you don t damage anything. (Pics 18-19) 9. When you are happy with the fan position, slide the fan shroud into place on the brackets, line up the holes and install the shroud on the brackets with the supplied screws and washers. Using your 7/16" wrench or socket, tighten the screws. Take care not to over tighten, you don t want to strip out the holes in the brackets. (Pics 20-21) 10. Align the radiator and shroud mounting brackets so everything is even and in place and tighten the 6 radiator mounting bolts with your 3/8" ratchet and 1/2" socket. 11. Reinstall the upper radiator hose and the hood latch bracket and support if you removed them after step Check to make sure all your bolts and hose clamps are tight, refill the radiator with coolant and start the engine to check for leaks. If everything is leak free reinstall the radiator cap and you are good to go! #16626 Stock V-8 position installation 5. Remove and install your new fan and spacer if you are doing so using your 3/8" drive ratchet and 1/2" socket. If you have a 605 box installed on your car proceed to step 6, if not then proceed to step This step only applies to vehicles, which have had a 500/605 box or similar power steering conversion installed. The power steering pump for a 500/605 conversion on a car with a V-8 position radiator will not clear the fan shroud. The shroud must be modified. You will need to notch the shroud to clear the power steering pump pulley on the side and at the bottom. This photo shows you what we had to do to modify our shroud, but each application will be different so your modifications will vary depending on where your pump is positioned and which pulley you are using. 6 FAN SHROUD INSTALL If everything is leak free reinstall the radiator cap and you are good to go! (Pic 32) #16627 V-8 core support installation and bracket installation to mount a V-8 radiator in the 6-cylinder position. 7. Once the fan is installed and you have modified your shroud, if necessary, slide the shroud between the core support and the fan from the top. It will be a tight fit but you should be able to get it in there without scratching anything. Move the shroud forward as close to the engine as possible to get maximum clearance between the shroud and the core support. (Pics 23-24) 8. Slide the radiator back into position. Ta k e y o u r time and be careful, there is not much room and you don t want to damage the radiator fins. (Pic 25) 9. When the radiato r i s in position, reinstall the lower radiator h o s e a n d transmission cooler lines. These are difficult to install once the brackets and shroud are in place. (Pic 26) 1 0. S l i d e the shroud b r a c k e t s b e t w e e n the radiator b r a c k e t s and the core s u p p o r t. Install the 6 bolts that secure the radiator with your 3/8" drive ratchet and 1/2" socket. Leave them a little loose for adjustment. (Pics ) 11. Slide the fan shroud o v e r t h e brackets and line up the 3 mounting holes on each side. Make sure that the fan blades are half way in and half way out of the fan shroud opening. If this is not the case you will have to refigure the length of the spacer you are using to get proper alignment. When you are satisfied the fan position is correct, secure with the 6 supplied screws and washers leaving them a little loose for adjustment. (Pics 30-31) 12. Align everything so it is nice and even and tighten the 6 radiator bolts with your 3/8" ratchet and 1/2" socket or 1/2" wrench and tighten the fan shroud screws with your 7/16" socket or wrench. 13. Reinstall the upper radiator hose, check to make sure all your bolts and hose clamps are tight, refill the radiator with coolant and start the engine to check for leaks. 5. Remove the fan assembly from the water pump. If you have already installed our #11236 brackets and moved your V-8 radiator to the 6-cylinder position go to step Bolt the conversion b r a c k e t s, #11236, to the radiator using the bolts you removed in step 4. The b r a c k e t s i n s t a l l o n the radiator fa c i n g t h e engine and the radiator will mount in front of the core support. Leave the bolts a little loose for adjustments later. (Pic 33) 7. Slide the r a d i a t o r and bracket assembly in through the opening in the core support. H ave yo u r friend hold the radiator in place. (Pics 34-35) 6 (800)

Slide the fan shroud into place between the brackets and the old installation point for the radiator on the engine side of the core support. If you have previously installed our #11236 conversion brackets you will first need to remove the bolts holding the brackets to the core support with your 3/8" ratchet and 1/2" socket. Install the fan assembly on the water pump. Make sure that the fan blades are half way in and half way out of the fan shroud opening. If this is not the case you will have to refigure the length of the spacer you are using to get proper alignment. You may have to move the shroud a little to get the fan in place, take your time so you don t damage anything. (Pics 36-37) 11. Align everything so it is even and in place and tighten the 6 radiator mounting bolts with your 3/8" ratchet and 1/2" socket. Take care not to over tighten, you don t want to strip out the holes in the shroud. (Pics 40-41) 12. Reinstall the upper radiator hose and the hood latch bracket and support if you removed them after step 3. # V8 in Stock Position 13. Check to make sure all your bolts and hose clamps are tight, refill the radiator with coolant and start the engine to check for leaks. If everything is leak free reinstall the radiator cap and you are good to go! 10. When you are happy with the fan position, line up the holes in the conversion brackets with the old radiator mounting holes and install the shroud inside the brackets with the supplied screws and Danchuk...
