1 Page 1 of 5 Title Perform minor servicing tasks on a petrol fuel system Level 2 Credits 2 Purpose This unit standard is for people who wish to enter or are employed in the automotive repair industry. People credited with this unit standard able to: check fuel system for leaks and blockage; remove and replace a fuel filter; remove and replace injectors on an electronic fuel injection (EFI) system; remove and replace a fuel pump; and check engine exhaust emissions. Classification Motor Industry > Automotive Fuel Systems and Exhaust Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Exhaust Emissions 2007, Rule 33001/2. 2 Land Transport Rules are produced for the Minister of Transport by Land Transport New Zealand. These rules are available online at 3 Definitions Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and Service information may include but is not limited to technical information of a vehicle, machine, or product detailing operation; installation and servicing procedures; manufacturer instructions and specifications; technical terms and descriptions; and detailed illustrations. This can be accessed in hard copy or electronic format and is normally sourced from the manufacturer. Suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task in a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Check fuel system for leaks and blockage.
2 Page 2 of Safe working practices are observed throughout the task in accordance with environmental safety, tools and equipment safety, safety precautions when working with fuel at high pressure. 1.2 Suitable tools and equipment are selected for identifying and repairing leaks in 1.3 Visual inspection is carried out with the system under pressure, and leaks are identified, noted, and reported to the supervisor in accordance with service information. joints, gaskets, perished or damaged hoses, corroded or damaged pipes, petrol tank, security of pipes and hoses. 1.4 Fuel pressure is relieved prior to any removal and replacement of parts in 1.5 Fuel leaks are rectified in 1.6 Fuel pipes and hose are checked for blockage and any blockage cleared in 1.7 Fuel system components are checked for security, and defects rectified, in hose, pipes, petrol tank. 1.8 Vacuum hose is checked for security and leakage and any faults are rectified in Outcome 2 Remove and replace a fuel filter. 2.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task in accordance with environmental safety, tools and equipment safety, fuel safety. 2.2 Suitable tools and equipment are selected for removing and replacing a fuel filter in 2.3 The pressure is relieved and the fuel filter element is removed without damage to the fuel casing, element and other componentry in accordance with service

Waste fuel is disposed of in accordance with company requirements. 2.4 The fuel filter is checked for contamination and expiry date in accordance with service information, and a report is given to the supervisor in accordance with company requirements. 2.5 A new filter element and gasket are selected, fitted, and tightened ensuring that dirt and moisture are kept out in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Outcome 3 Remove and replace injectors on an EFI system. 3.1 Safety precautions necessary when working on a vehicle with EFI are carried out in care when working with and handling pressurised fuel lines, prevention of petrol-rich fumes entering the catalytic converter. 3.2 Suitable tools and equipment are selected for removing and replacing injectors in 3.3 Fuel pressure is relieved prior to any removal and replacement of parts in 3.4 The injectors are disconnected and removed without damage to injectors, pipes, or connections in 3.5 Replacement or original injectors are installed and connected in accordance with service information. Outcome 4 Remove and replace a fuel pump. 4.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task in accordance with environmental safety, tools and equipment safety, fuel safety. 4.2 Suitable tools and equipment are selected for removing and replacing a fuel pump in 4.3 The fuel pump is removed without damage to any componentry in accordance with service information. Waste fuel is disposed of in accordance with company requirements.

The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
