Engine coolant does more than prevent freezing and boiling of the engine cooling system; coolant also lubricates the water pump and provides corrosion protection for aluminum radiators and engine components. Most coolants are glycol-based which aid in the effective heat transfer, anti-freeze and anti-boiling characteristics of an engine. 4 to 5% of coolant is made up of additives which protect the engine from corrosion and liner cavitation, (pitting caused by bubbles within the cooling system.) Recommended service intervals for changing engine coolant will vary from manufacture to manufacturer, it is generally regarded that engine coolant should be changed every 40,000kms or 2 years. Vehicle Cooling System
Coolant System Flushing Simply draining and replacing engine coolant, you are not removing all the old coolant trapped in the engine block, hoses and heater core. Consequently leaving harmful corrosive chemicals. The only effective way to remove all the old engine coolant from the cooling system is by flushing the entire system. The most effective way of carrying out a cooling system flush is by using a flushing machine specifically designed to connect to the vehicle to circulate new coolant into the engine while withdrawing the old coolant. Cavitation corrosion caused by air in the cooling system Fortron Cooling System Flush Fortron Cooling system flush will help to remove rust, sludge and scale deposits from the engine cooling system. It will also assist in lubricating the engine water pump, and is harmless to metal, rubber and seals. Fortron recommend cooling system flush be added to all cooling systems prior to coolant replacement.
Fortron Coolant Replacement Machine The Fortron Coolant Replacement Machine allows a quick and effective way of flushing and exchanging the cooling system fluid. Provides an economical, fast and clean solution to coolant exchanging. Simply connect to top radiator hose with step adaptors Approx minutes per service Portable and sturdy design air operated Ensures complete coolant flush and exchange, i.e. up to 100% of system Complete set of fittings and adaptors Synchronized operation which sucks in waste coolant and supplies new coolant at exchange operation Intake safety valve feature automatically releases pressure if too high Engine OFF operation, back flush procedure to remove coolant efficiently on a hot or cold vehicle
Recommending Coolant System Flushing There are different approaches to recommending a cooling system service / flush. Here are 3 recommend ways. 1. Customer service history (check your customers service history if you have no record of them having a cooling system service within the last 24 months) Recommend it! 2. When your Service technician recommends the engine coolant requires replacement. 3. Customer has had overheating or major engine repairs suggest a full cooling system service, as part of the repairs. Counter Sale Service Adviser: having checked your service history today I have noticed that your vehicle has not had a cooling system service, we recommend a cooling system every 2 years. Customer: why is this necessary? Service Adviser: Engine coolant over time will become corrosive and contaminated, Causing potential blockages, leaks and overheating. The cooling system service will cost $... Technician recommendation Service Adviser: Our service technician while carrying the service on your vehicle today has recommended a cooling system service, he / she have reported that your engine coolant has become discoloured and is dirty. Customer: What if I do not change the coolant.
Service Adviser: you may experience your engine running hot or even overheating prior to your next service. The cooling system service will cost $... Carrying Engine Repairs Whenever carrying out engine repairs on a customer s vehicle such as, head gasket replacement, engine overhaul or even radiator hose replacement. Recommend a cooling system flush this will ensure the engine cooling system will be clean and operate efficiency. Preventative Maintenance By performing preventative maintenance on a customer s vehicle you are ultimately saving the customer money, while at the same time generating more income for your department. Most customers already carry out preventative maintenance on their vehicles. For example, checking tyre pressures, checking engine oil and water or even something as simple as topping up the windscreen washer bottle before it becomes empty. Customers are accustomed to the principle. Recommending to your customers any service which may catch any potential problems early, will result in happier customers. If there is an opportunity recommend it! If there is a potential problem recommend the repair!
