Working on the vehicle cooling system Working on the vehicle cooling system WARNING! When making modifications to the cooling system, the cooling system must be emptied, refilled and pressure tested. The cooling system is advanced and minor faults can cause serious consequences for the functioning of the cooling system and vehicle or for the personnel working with the cooling system. More information on external circuits is found in the document Coolant outlets for external heating. WARNING! Use protective equipment when working on the vehicle cooling system. Coolant can cause skin irritation. Hot coolant can cause burns. Ethylene glycol can be fatal if ingested. IMPORTANT! Use only Scania Coolant, or other tested product that meets Scania requirements regarding antifreeze and protection against corrosion. Damage arising from the use of incorrect coolant can invalidate Scania s warranty. Damage to the coolant pump shaft seal will cause coolant leakage. Fill coolant in the correct way, more information is found under the heading. Air pockets can cause overheating and thereby damage to the coolant pump shaft seal. Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 1 (10)
Working on the vehicle cooling system Do not start the engine if there is too little coolant in the cooling system, as this could cause overheating and thereby extensive damage. Too high a dose of antifreeze or corrosion protection will increase the amount of sludge and blockages in the radiator. Too low a content of antifreeze or corrosion protection may lead to corrosion in the cooling system or build-up of ice at low temperatures. Contact your Scania dealer for further information about coolant. IMPORTANT! The following applies when modifying the cooling system: After filling the coolant, the cooling system must be pressure tested. More information on pressure testing is found under the heading Pressure testing the cooling system. Coolant content and properties Coolant recommended by Scania is a mixture of water, antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor (ethylene glycol). Coolant has the following properties which are important for the functioning of the cooling system: Corrosion protection Antifreeze Raised boiling point Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 2 (10)
Working on the vehicle cooling system Hot countries IMPORTANT! In order to maintain the protection from corrosion it is very important that the coolant contains antifreeze and corrosion protection also in countries where the temperature never drops below 0 C. The antifreeze and corrosion protection content should always be percent by volume. Otherwise, the coolant is not effective. Topping up Coolant must only be topped up with pre-mixed coolant. Pre-mixed coolant can either be a concentrate mixed with clean freshwater or pre-mixed coolant from the factory. IMPORTANT! Containers, which are used for mixing coolant, must be intended for the purpose and free from any dirt or contaminants. Keep empty containers closed so that they do not attract dirt or dust. The coolant must only be topped-up within the coolant change interval. Coolant that is re-used must be cleaned from dirt, sludge and particles before reusing. The coolant must not be re-used if it is contaminated with oil or fuel. Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 3 (10)
Parts for the work The following spare parts are available from Scania dealers. It is permitted to use other, equivalent parts: Working on the vehicle cooling system Designation Part number Picture Coolant trolley Adapter for filling coolant Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 4 (10)
4 5 1 Drain and filler nipples 2 Coolant trolley 3 Bleed pipe 4 Max. level for coolant 5 Expansion tank cap Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 5 (10)
For vehicles without retarder 1. Connect the coolant trolley (2) using the adapter and fill coolant via the drain and filler nipple (1), see the illustration. 2. Ensure that the cooling system bleed pipes (3) are not blocked or damaged. The bleed pipes come from the radiator and engine to the expansion tank. 3. Open the expansion tank cap (5). 4. Fill coolant using the coolant trolley (2) until the coolant reaches the maximum level of the expansion tank (4). 5. Disconnect the coolant trolley. Start the engine and let it run at 1,000 rpm for 15 minutes. If the level in the expansion tank should get too low and a warning Engine coolant level low is issued, go directly to point Switch off the engine. Fill coolant to the maximum level via the expansion tank. Close the cap. If point 5 was interrupted due to the Engine coolant level low warning, go back to point 5. Note: Only small quantities of coolant may be poured in from above. The system must be thoroughly bled. Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 6 (10)
M1 R4 P M3 R2 R1 R3 R5 coolant For vehicles with retarder 1. Connect the coolant trolley (2) using the adapter and fill coolant via the drain and filler nipple (1), see the illustration. 2. Connect a nipple with hose to the bleed nipple on the retarder s outgoing pipe, see illustration. The hose should be long enough to be connected to the coolant trolley and convey the air-mixed coolant there. 3. Fill coolant using the coolant trolley (2), see illustration. 4. Open the expansion tank cap (5). 5. Fill until a steady stream of coolant flows out from the retarder cooler. Remove the nipple with the hose. 6. Fill coolant up to the maximum level of the expansion tank (4), see illustration. 7. Disconnect the coolant trolley. Start the engine and let it run at 1,000 rpm for 15 minutes. If the level in the expansion tank should get too low and a warning Engine coolant level low is issued, go directly to point Switch off the engine. Fill coolant to the maximum level through the expansion tank. Close the cap. If point 6 was interrupted due to the Engine coolant level low warning, go back to point 6. More information on external circuits is found in the document Coolant outlets for external heating. For vehicles with external circuit connected If an external circuit is connected to the cooling system, it must be equipped with a bleed point at its highest point. The bleed point must be open during filling. The bleed nipple on the retarder cooler WARNING! On vehicles with an auxiliary water heater for the cab or engine heating, the cooling system must be bled as described above before the water heater may be started. Oth- Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 7 (10)
erwise, the water heater could overheat, which would lead to impaired function and shortened service life. Checking and filling coolant IMPORTANT! It is possible that a small amount of air remains in air pockets in the cooling system. Therefore, always top up the expansion tank after the engine has been warm and the thermostat has opened. It is necessary to run the engine for some time before all air has been evacuated from the cooling system, which may involve topping up coolant at a later stage. Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 8 (10)
Pressure testing the cooling system Pressure testing the cooling system Pressure test the cooling system to check the system s tightness. The delivery valve must not open until pressure has reached bar (overpressure). Once the pressure valve has opened, the remaining pressure in the system must not be lower than 0.8 bar (overpressure). Parts for the work The following spare parts are available from Scania dealers. It is permitted to use other, equivalent parts. Designation Part number Picture Cooling system tester The cooling system pressure valve is located on the expansion tank Adapter for pressure testing the cooling system Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 9 (10)
Work description for pressure testing Pressure testing the cooling system 1. Remove the expansion tank cap. 2. Check the sealing surface on the filler pipe and the cap gasket for damage. 3. Check that the coolant level is correct. Top up if necessary. 4. Attach cooling system tester with adapter instead of the filler cap, see illustration. 5. Pump up the pressure until the pressure limiting valve opens. The correct opening pressure is bar. 6. Stop pumping and allow the pressure limiting valve to close. If the pressure continues to drop below 0.8 bar, it can be due to leakage. Rectify the leakage and carry out a new pressure test. Cooling system tester Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 10 (10)
