1 General Vitro (formerly PPG Industries) Solarban 70XL and Solarban 70XLVT coated glass are another innovative improvement in energy efficient coated glass technology from Vitro Solarban 70XL low emissivity coated glass offers the best solar control properties available with non-reflective coated glass products. A standard one inch clear insulating glass unit (¼ Solarban 70XL(2) Starphire glass + ½ Airspace + ¼ Clear glass) has a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) comparable to other solar control low emissivity coatings that have been applied to tinted glass substrates. And, Solarban 70XL coated glass offers superior solar control while maintaining relatively high visible light transmittance, resulting in the highest light to solar gain (LSG) ratio available. Availability Solarban 70XL and Solarban 70XLVT coated glass are available only to Vitro s Certified Fabricator customers. On a project specific basis, Solarban 70XL coated glass may be ordered as cut sizes. Please contact your Vitro Account Manager or Customer Service Representative concerning the availability of ordering cut sizes for your project. Nomenclature In order to ensure clarity of communication, keep in mind that Solarban 70XL coated glass can only be used as an annealed glass product, while the Solarban 70XLVT coated glass is temperable and is to be used when either heat strengthening or tempering is required. VERY IMPORTANT! Solarban 70XL coated glass can only be used as an annealed product, i.e., it CANNOT be tempered or heat strengthened. Solarban 70XLVT coated glass must be tempered or heat strengthened, i.e., it CANNOT be used as an annealed product. Performance Comparison Vitro has attempted to achieve the highest visible light transmittance, as well as the best aesthetic match between Solarban 70XL and Solarban 70XLVT coated glass. This is accomplished by offering the Solarban 70XL coating on only a Starphire glass substrate and the Solarban 70XLVT coating on only a clear glass substrate. The Solarban 70XL and Solarban 70XLVT coatings can also be used as third surface coatings in combination with a tinted glass outdoor lite. 3 Technical Considerations General When handling and processing Solarban 70XL coated glass, the best practices developed over years of successful experience with Solarban 60 coated glass must be followed. Gloves, wash detergents, and cutting fluids that have been approved for use with Solarban 60 coated glass must be used with Solarban 70 XL coated glass. Washer brushes must have a bristle diameter of Final rinse water on all washers must have total dissolved solids of 20ppm or less. Recommended shelf life is 3-6 months from receipt of product. Heat Treating Guidelines The thermal emissivity of the Solarban 70XLVT coating is which is slightly lower than that of the Solarban 60 coating which has a thermal emissivity of Therefore, when heat treating (either heat strengthening or tempering) Solarban 70XLVT coated glass; the heating cycle will typically have to be slightly longer than for Solarban 60VTII coated glass. As a guideline, we recommend adding 5 seconds to your current cycle time for Solarban 60VTII coated glass for comparable sizes. This is a reasonable point of departure. Heat Treating Guidelines (continued) Of course, the furnace operator will make appropriate adjustments and develop the final heat treating recipe parameters as he gains experience with the product. Thermal Stress As always, Vitro recommends that early design consideration be given to the potential for thermal stress breakage. Vitro offers TD- 109: Thermal Stress Update and an on-line Thermal Stress Analysis computer tool to help design professionals evaluate the risk of thermal stress breakage. Both TD-109 and the Thermal Stress Analysis program can be accessed via Vitro s website ( As a service to our customers and to design professionals, TD-109 includes guidelines to reduce thermal stress breakage in annealed ¼ (6mm) thick glass. These guidelines offer maximum unit areas for insulating glass units with annealed glass, based on assumed glazing and installation conditions. It is critically important that the appropriate design professional confirm that the expected glazing and installation conditions of the project are no more severe than those assumed for the guidelines. Figure 3 provides thermal stress factors for use in performing a thermal stress analysis for Solarban 70XL coated glass. Figure 4 provides guidelines for the use of annealed glass. Please refer to TD-502 for additional information regarding edge deletion, including Vitro s recommendations. Insulating Glass Requirements As with all Vitro MSVD coated glass, Solarban 70XL coated glass must be incorporated into a sealed insulating glass unit with the coating encapsulated in the sealed gas cavity. Insulating glass units must be dual seal, with a PIB continuous primary bead and a secondary seal made with hot melt Vitro Architectural Glass PAGE 4 OF 7

5 Insulating Glass Requirements (cont.) Solarban 70XL cannot be used as a monolithic vision or spandrel product. Long term exposure of the coating outside of a sealed insulating glass unit will lead to coating failure. for best practices for laminating Solarban 70XL and 70XLVT coated glass. If breather/capillary tubes are used, they must be crimped and sealed upon arrival at the final destination. Failure to properly crimp and seal the breather/capillary tubes will void Vitro s coating warranty. Lamination Requirements The Solarban 70XL and Solarban 70XLVT coatings are approved for lamination with the coating in contact with the interlayer. The coating will be warranted in accordance with Vitro s MSVD Low-E Coated Glass Warranty for this type of application provided that the fabrication was performed by a member in good standing of the Vitro Certified Laminator Program. The Solarban 70XL and Solarban 70XLVT coatings can also be laminated with the coating exposed provided that the laminate is then incorporated into an insulating glass unit with the coating encapsulated in the sealed gas cavity. In these applications, the coating will be warranted in accordance with Vitro s MSVD Low-E Coated Glass Warranty. It is recommended that you use Vitro s Certified Laminator Guidelines as a resource Vitro Architectural Glass PAGE 5 OF 7

6 Silicone Structural Glazed Applications Solarban 70XL and Solarban 70XLVT coated glass may exhibit a perimeter sight line where the coating is deleted. Since the glass edges are not concealed in a glazing rabbet in 2-side and 4-side structural silicone glazing applications, the area where the coating is deleted may appear differently from the non-deleted area. This contrast in appearance, may create a noticeable picture frame around the perimeter of the unit. In addition, the insulating glass unit sealant materials and spacer may be more noticeable. Figure 5, depicting, a 2-side structural silicone application, is offered to help conceptualize this potential issue.
