3 Starphire Ultra-Clear / PPG BuyLine 0239 With its unique blue-edge and superior clarity, Starphire glass represents the ultimate achievement in ultra-clear glass technology. NEW for 2006! Extra-Heavy Starphire Now Available in 16 and 19 Millimeters When conventional clear glass is laminated into multiple layers, or specified in increasing thicknesses, its appearance becomes progressively greener. The opposite occurs with Starphire glass, whose clarity becomes more apparent as the glass gets thicker. Architects can now take advantage of this unique characteristic by specifying Starphire Extra-Heavy glass, in thicknesses of 16 (5/8") and 19 (3/4") millimeters. The glass also is available monolithically in a variety of thicknesses for vision glass, security glass, spider walls and other specialty and decorative applications. Tokyo Kasai Rinkai Park View Visitors Center Location: Chiba Prefecture, Japan Products: Starphire Ultra-Clear Architect: Yoshio Taniguchi Glazing Contractor: Arai Co. Fabricator: Sanshiba Co. The ultra-clear character of Starphire glass is exemplified in this Tokyo visitor center project. The difference between the unglazed lower-level breezeway and the Starphire-glazed areas is nearly imperceptible. Contrast that to the green appearance of the glass hand rails which are glazed with conventional clear glass. 4 New in Spring 2006! ban 70 XL Control Low-E Clearly, the New Standard in Control Low-E PPG introduces ban 70 XL glass, a technological breakthrough in Control Low-E glass that creates the industry s best combination of high visible light transmittance and low solar heat gain coefficient, together in a clear, colorneutral aesthetic. ban 70 XL (2) glass provides a Heat Gain Coefficient of 0.27 with Visible Light Transmittance of 63% in a one-inch insulating glass unit. The result is a Light to Gain (LSG) ratio of 2.33, which exceeds other Control Low-E glasses on the market. ban 70 XL glass is designed for maximum Visible Light Transmittance and is available only on Starphire Ultra-Clear glass (see performance data on page 10). For a tinted glass appearance in an insulating glass unit, ban 70 XL glass can be used in the #3 orientation with any number of outboard tinted glasses from PPG, including tints from the Oceans of Color collection of spectrally selective tinted glasses or our expansive series of Earth-Tone glasses. Clarity, solar control and visible light transmittance are combined in unprecedented fashion in ban 70 XL glass, a revolutionary new Control Low-E glass from PPG. ban 70 XL glass is the first glass to offer such exceptional levels of solar control and visible light transmittance in a clear, color-neutral glass. Grand River Center in Dubuque, Iowa, features alternating bands of energyefficient ban 60 and ban 80 glasses. Architects and building owners get the best of both with ban 70 XL glass, a revolutionary new Control Low-E glass from PPG. Architect: HOK Sport + Venue + Event; Glazing Contractor: East Moline Co.; Fabricator: Oldcastle Reduced Equipment Costs. Long Term Energy Savings. An independent energy and environmental research firm recently conducted more than 270 energy simulations for a variety of common building types in climates across the U.S. The simulations were designed to compare the energy performance of ban 70 XL glass to that of other leading Control Low-E glasses. Compared to currently available competitive products, the studies demonstrated that ban 70 XL glass has the potential depending on the climate and the size, design and window type of a building to reduce annual cooling costs for a given structure by as much as three to five percent annually. While this finding was certainly significant, the testing revealed that the greatest benefits of specifying ban 70 XL glass could be realized in upfront construction costs, where its exceptional solar control characteristics reduced initial capital costs for cooling equipment by as much as 26 percent. This level of energy and cost savings potential was consistent across the complete range of scenarios, from three-story hospital buildings in Boston and Chicago, to eight-story office structures in Atlanta and Phoenix. ban 70 XL glass will be available exclusively through members of the PPG Certified Fabricator Network in the Spring of To order a product sample, or to see the study detailing the energy- and cost-saving potential of ban 70 XL glass, call PPG-IDEA ( ) or visit PPG-IDEA ( )

6 Passive Low-E es Sungate 500 Low-E With more than 200 million square feet shipped in the last decade, Sungate 500 Low-E glass is one of the industry s most trusted and proven products. Thanks to the increased emphasis on energy efficiency, the value of this proven technology continues to multiply. In certain geographic areas, the ability of Sungate 500 Low-E glass to transmit the warming rays of the sun (as measured by its higher Heat Gain Coefficient) can lower heating requirements. Performance Sungate 500 glass has the color neutrality of a clear uncoated glass, together with outstanding energy performance. When used in a one-inch insulating glass unit, Sungate 500 glass produces winter nighttime U-value improvements of 27% compared to a standard clear glass insulating unit, while transmitting as much as 94% of its visible light. Versatility When added solar control is required, Sungate 500 glass can be teamed with a spectrally selective tint from the Oceans of Color collection in a one-inch insulating glass unit. This produces the benefits of high visible light transmittance, improved solar control and a variety of aesthetic options. For example, Sungate 500 Azuria glass delivers a Light to Gain (LSG) ratio of 1.68, well above the minimum standard for spectrally selective glass* as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy. (For performance data on other Sungate 500/Oceans of Color combinations, see pages ) Sungate 100 Low-E Sungate 100 Low-E glass combines a clear glass appearance with excellent insulating properties. 9 New! Subtly Reflective, Color-Enriched and Reflective es Vistacool AZURIA Subtly Reflective, Color-Enriched Vistacool Azuria, a second surface coating, marks the introduction of an entirely new architectural glass category, offering high levels of visible light transmittance and a more understated look than the mirror-like appearance of traditional reflective glass. Vistacool Azuria delivers these characteristics in an exceptionally rich aqua-blue sheen, the direct result of the new Vistacool coating, whose color-neutrality transmits high levels of daylight and amplifies the tint of the glass substrate underneath, creating a cleaner, crisper, more pristine exterior aesthetic. The unique place of Vistacool Azuria on the architectural glass spectrum is best demonstrated by comparing its relationship of Transmittance and Reflectance to other reflective, tinted glasses. While levels of outdoor reflectance vary among reflective glasses, Vistacool Azuria transmits 52% of visible light between 20 and 35% more than comparable reflective tinted glasses (6mm) / PPG BuyLine 0239 Vistacool (2) Azuria offers an unprecedented combination of subtle reflectivity and visible light transmittance, along with an exceptionally rich and lustrous aqua-blue sheen. The Vistacool coating not only transmits high levels of daylight, but, due to its color neutrality, also serves to amplify and enrich the tint of the Azuria glass substrate underneath, creating a crisper, cleaner and more pristine exterior aesthetic. Paired in a one-inch insulating glass unit with ban 60 Control Low-E glass, Vistacool Azuria achieves an excellent SHGC of 0.26 while maintaining a VLT of 42% and exterior reflectance of 20%. The glass soft reflectivity also makes it ideal for harmonizing vision with non-vision spandrel glass. cool Reflective Since their introduction in 1972, durable cool reflective coated glasses have enhanced the appearance of thousands of buildings, as well as the comfort of their inhabitants. Combined in a one-inch insulating glass unit with clear glass, cool reflective glass offers an expansive palette of appearance and performance characteristics with Heat Gain Coefficients ranging from 0.34 to This performance can be enhanced with the addition of a Control Low-E or Low-E on the third surface of a one-inch insulating unit. As with all reflective glasses, cool glasses can help contribute to better vision/spandrel color harmony. When glazed to the outboard lite (#1 surface), cool produces a reflective metallic sheen. On the second (#2 surface), cool coatings in combination with PPG tinted glasses to produce a range of aesthetic options: cool Azuria glass yields a reflective aqua-blue tint. cool Caribia glass imparts a reflective, warm green appearance. cool Solexia glass displays natural green reflectivity. cool Bronze glass produces a silvery-bronze aesthetic. cool Gray glass shows a darker gray. cool Graylite glass achieves an almost-black aesthetic. Actual values may vary slightly due to variations in the production process. 1. Figures may vary due to manufacturing tolerances. All tabulated data is based on NFRC methodology using the LBL Window 5.2 software. Variations from previously published data are due to minor changes in the LBL Window 5.2 software versus Version Transmittance and reflectance values based on spectrophotometric measurements and energy distribution of solar radiation. 3. U-value (K-value) is the overall coefficient of heat transmittance or heat flow measured in BTU/hr. ft 2 F (watts/m 2 C). Lower U-values indicate better insulating performance. 4. Shading coefficient is the ratio of the total amount of solar energy that passes through a glass relative to 1/8-in. (3.0mm) thick clear glass under the same design conditions. It includes both solar energy transmitted directly plus any absorbed solar energy re-radiated and convected. Lower shading coefficient values indicate better performance in reducing solar heat gain. Note: Performance values were calculated using the LBL Window 5.2 program using NFRC standard winter and summer design condition. 5. heat gain coefficient (SHGC) represents the solar heat gain through the glass relative to the incident solar radiation. It is equal to 86% of the shading coefficient. 6. Light to Gain ratio (LSG) is the ratio of visible light transmittance to solar heat gain coefficient.
