2 Executive Summary Millbrook Proving Ground was commissioned by Punctureseal UK Ltd. to conduct a test to determine the effectiveness of the supplied Punctureseal tyre sealant in limiting tyre pressure decay in two punctured tyres on a Renault Megane. The two test tyres comprised one new, and one tyre worn by approximately 40%, fitted to the front of the Renault Megane. The testing was conducted with the following steps in order to evaluate the tyre pressure decay. 1. Addition of tyre sealant into both front tyres minute running to condition tyres with the tyre sealant. 3. Laceration of both front tyres using 2 screws in each minute running for post laceration conditioning. 5. Park vehicle to undertake 24 hour period of monitoring. Laceration of the tyres with Punctureseal fitted resulted in a very small loss of pressure (1.0 psi) in the worn tyre, and no loss of pressure in the new tyre. 5 Objectives 1. To determine the effectiveness of the supplied Punctureseal UK Limited sealant in limiting tyre pressure decay, on two lacerated tyres, one new and one worn. 2. To determine the difference in performance of the tyre sealant between the new and worn tyres. Conclusions 1. Following the laceration process, which caused a marginal loss in tyre pressure (1.0 psi max), the subsequent conditioning and 24 hour monitoring soak period showed no further loss in pressure. 2. The only difference in performance between the new and worn tyre was during the laceration process, the new tyre lost no pressure, the worn tyre reduced by 1.0 psi. 6 Test Facility and Date The test was performed on 7 th October 2011 using on road facilities at Millbrook Proving Ground Ltd. 7 Test Procedure The supplied test vehicle, a Renault Megane, was prepared for test by fitting one new and one part worn tyre to the left hand front and right hand front respectively. A tyre pressure monitoring system was also fitted to record tyre pressures at a frequency of 2 Hz. The tyre sealant was supplied and inserted into the two front tyres by Punctureseal UK Limited personnel. The vehicle was then driven in a general manner for thirty minutes to pre-condition the tyres. A Stack Tyre Pressure Monitoring System was used in conjunction with a Racelogic VBox II to record tyre pressures in two tyres with Punctureseal after a laceration process was carried out. Figure 1 - TPMS sensor fitted to wheel Following insertion of the supplied Punctureseal, the front tyre pressures were set to 35 psi. The vehicle was then driven for a period of approximately thirty minutes to pre-condition the tyres for the test. Millbrook Test Report No. 11/0710 Commercial in Confidence Page 7 of 14

8 On completion of the pre-conditioning run, the tyres were allowed to cool overnight which resulted in stabilisation of the pressures at 35 psi, as before the preconditioning run. Two lacerations were put in each of the two front tyres by driving the vehicle over a wooden board with screws vertical on one side. Due to the nature of the laceration process, the puncture sustained to the new tyre was of a less severe nature than that on the worn tyre, due to it being applied to a stronger point of the tyre tread. 9 The vehicle was then driven around the high speed circuit, handling circuit and hill route to condition the tyres. This was carried out in the same manner as the prelaceration conditioning process. The vehicle was then parked in a garage for the period of monitoring. The vehicle was parked such that the lacerations were at the lowest point of each of the front tyres as requested by Punctureseal UK Limited. 10 Test Results and Discussion Following the insertion of Punctureseal and the 30 minute conditioning run, the tyres were punctured. The puncturing of the tyres, with Punctureseal added, resulted in no loss of pressure in the new (LHF) tyre and 1.0 psi in the worn (RHF) tyre as shown in the graph below. Figure 5 - Effect of puncturing the tyres with sealant present Immediately after the tyres were punctured, the vehicle was driven for approximately 25 minutes (a repeat of the pre-puncture conditioning run). The tyre temperatures increased raising the tyre pressures to 39.5 psi in the RHF (worn tyre) and to 39.2 psi in the LHF (new tyre). This is shown in the graph below. 11 When the tyres had cooled down following the post laceration conditioning run, the tyre pressures were 34.8 psi in the LHF (new tyre) and 34.8 psi in the RHF (worn tyre) and remained at this level for the remainder of the 24 hour monitoring period as shown in the graph below. The graph shows that the pressures were stable once the temperatures had equalised with ambient conditions. 13 Further Work There are several additional factors that could be investigated with further work. These are: 1. Ensure laceration of tyre at weak point as a worst case. 2. Lacerate the tyre in more locations and with larger holes. 3. Evaluate the performance of the product at various temperatures. 4.
