Grease
What is Grease???? Close your eyes and envision it
Did look like this?
Or this?
Maybe this
I mean this
The word grease comes from the Latin word crassus, meaning fat, dense or thick, which adequately describes its consistency.
The ancient Romans and Egyptians are both believed to have been among the first to create real grease. Gaius Julius Caesar (July 12, 100 BC - March 15, 44 BC)
by combining olive oil with lime (calcium carbonate) to make calcium-based grease.
by combining olive oil with lime (calcium carbonate) to make calcium-based grease.

saponification Process like making soap Chemical reaction between the fat or fatty acids and an alkali or thickener
Metal Hydroxide Different types make and define the grease
Hydroxides Aluminum Hydroxide Lithium hydroxide Calcium Hydroxide Aluminum Lithium calcium
Grease characteristics Greases are classified and characterized in many ways. These characteristics are identifiers that allow us to evaluate the ability of a grease compared with others. They can be found on the lubricant specification sheet provide by the manufacturer.

oil s oil, and that all our applications can be handled by one multi-purpose grease. Manufacturers commonly list over 40 greases and lubricating oils, available in at least 10 viscosity ranges.
That s a lot!!!!
Fun Fact. Color Manufacturers often color grease with dyes for identification purposes. Grease can be: white, black, brown, green, blue or red. (White is typically reserved for food grade products.)
One of the most important aspects of lubrication is relative lubricant film thickness. Figure 1 illustrates this film thickness by depicting two pieces of metal as viewed through a microscope. Note that these pieces are not perfectly flat: R1 and R2 refer to their average roughness measurements. Between the two pieces, h is a measure of the separation resulting from the lubricant. Represented by the symbol λ, relative film thickness is calculated as:
Equipment and Installation Inspection Items 1.Inspect MCC bus bar connections for tightness by verifying that the torque meets manufacturer s specifications. Verify that connection hardware is consistent with the Owner s project specifications. 2.Inspect MCC bus bar supports for: cleanliness and tightness. 3.Inspect ground connections to ground bus. 4.Inspect operation of: mechanical interlocks, position indicators, drawout or rollout mechanism, and all safety interlock features. 5.Inspect contactor rating. 6.Inspect contactor-insulating parts for: cleanliness and dryness. 7.Inspect contactor electrical contact surfaces for cleanliness and smoothness. Lubricate per manufacturer s instructions. 8.Inspect contactor-seating surfaces of unplated and laminated magnet faces of contactor and relays. Remove any rust or rust preventative if present. 9.Inspect contactor power stabs and adjust per manufacturer s instructions. 10.Inspect manual operation of contactor and mechanical relay devices to verify that all parts are free and that they work smoothly. For air contactors, verify adjustment for contact wipe and alignment per manufacturer s instructions. 11.Inspect lubrication of contactor moving parts. 12.Inspect contactor vacuum bottles for damage. 13.Inspect size, type, and rating of current-limiting power fuses. 14.Inspect overload protective device rating and setting.
(1) The current path If grease on the components appears to be discolored it generally means that oxidation is taking place which leads to an increase in resistance. This increase in resistance gets even worse as the temperatures increases. Take the following action. Remove the old grease with de-natured alcohol. Apply a thin film of oxidation inhibiting grease to the silver surface of components in the current path. (NO- Oxide, Grade-A, Special) Do not lubricate the main and/or arcing contacts. If the breaker is left open for an extended length of time, dust and debris will accumulate to increase the contact resistance. NOTE: Contacts are cleaned each time the make and break, since they have a tendency to wipe as they interface with each other. If the grease is cracked and dry it should be removed and new grease applied.
If the current path has high micro-ohm readings, the culprit is most likely the current-carrying pivot point. All circuit breakers have one. If The current path will need to be disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated. Make sure that you follow the manufacturer s specifications for torque values when you re-assemble the components.
Prep the locations to lube Clean the components
Old methods Flammable Alcohol Kerosene Non flammable Chlorinated Trichloroethylene And variations

Citrus Cleaners Leaves a residue.
Scubby pads Scotch brite
(2) The mechanism Moving surfaces and bearing should be lubricated with synthetic grease, such as Mobil -28 or Anderol 757. CAUTION: Mobil-28 and Anderol 757 are both excellent lubricants, but DO NOT USE BOTH OF THEM ON THE SAME MECHANISM. They are unsuited to mix together, (incompatible).
If grease on the components appears to be discolored it generally means that oxidation is taking place and the problem must be addressed. In order to do-it-right, the old grease must be removed. This may require partial disassembling of the mechanism. Remove the old grease with de-natured alcohol. Let the parts dry before applying new grease. If a mechanism has contaminated grease it should be completely refurbished. If bearings are new be sure to wash out the old grease first. It may be incompatible with the grease you are about to pack them with. Do not apply grease to surfaces such as a latches or rollers. Do not use light machine oil.
