4 Pres OCTOBER MARKED THE END of our driving events. By the time you read this the last Driver s Ed and Autocross will have been completed. I did not spent much time in Colorado during October for a several reasons and had therefore missed many of our events. We were in the Boston area for about two weeks for the birth of our third grandchild. From there I went to Spokane, Washington to start work on the 2017 Parade. I was also back east for the last week of October. I found the Spokane area very interesting and I think it will make for a good Parade. It is a city of about 200,000 in the city proper. The hotel for Parade will be the Davenport Grand right across from the Convention Center where several of our Banquets will be held. The Convention Center sits right on the banks of the Columbia River. The Welcome Party will be on a Terrace overlooking the River. Next year will be quite a different Parade from this year at Jay Peak which was a relatively isolated ski resort. Being in the downtown area, there are many good restaurants and bars within walking distance of the hotel. The local region is pitching in and developing some scenic tours of the area. This is also a wine producing area so there should be some good wine tours. I think it should be a fun Parade! We are working on the schedule of events for next year. Our HPDE dates at High Plains Raceway next year will be: May 5-6, June (club race), July 15-16, September 9 10 and October 7-8. We will be filling out the rest of the schedule after we have our Annual Joint Board Meeting with AMR on November 5th and analyzing this year s results on with a special Board Meeting on November 19th. We are working on preparations for a Christmas party in conjunction with AMR. More to follow. Presidential Thoughts John Mackin, President Porsche Experience Center Atlanta Photo by Russ Rydberg, Editor Oktoberfast pictures and notes by David Allen I WAS FORTUNATE to be able to drive with your club over the weekend at Oktoberfast. You served up some awesome weather, high quality instructors, and a welcoming membership. Thank you. This is my third visit to HPR with your club; my father, Bill, drives a 2003 Boxster S that he and I share when I m able to make it out there. It s not a one-sided deal, as he comes out east to my home in CT once a year to drive one of the tracks on the other side of the Mississippi in my 2012 Audi S4 Watkins Glen this August, and VIR last fall.

5 Pres FALL COLORS HAVE BEEN out in force! Driving around our roads, either in the mountains or even around town, has been very colorful. Mother Nature has provided some great backdrops for pictures of our cars. Have you sent any to our Newsletter Editor? Maybe you will find one of my car in this issue! Keep an eye out! Events have now slowed down as we head into colder weather and the holidays. It is a time when we look back on the fun we had and plan for next summer s driving season. Planning has already started! The Board, the Social and Program Chairs, Driving Instructors and chairs, and many others are currently working on the details. Would you like to be a part of an event? You can help with many or just one! Just send an to me of what event(s) you would like to help with. This is the time to focus on getting your car ready for the winter. Some of you will prepare your garage queens for their winter hibernation, while others will put on winter tires and take on the snow! Either way, we show our cars the TLC they need. Just remember, even though your car may be tucked away in the garage while the snow is on the ground, don t let this stop you from coming out in your winter driver and join your fellow club members! Just know that I am an owner of a garage queen and often drive something non-porsche to a winter club event. I do miss driving my queen ; however, I enjoy the company of our club members so I still show up! Get up-to-date information on the latest events on our club website, rmr.pca.org, in your , on Facebook, and in every issue of HighGear. Our region is currently the 13th largest of all the regions! 6 Pres THIS PAST MONTH found me flying to Hartsfield -Jackson Atlanta International Airport to visit the Porsche Experience Center and all it has to offer. You will find my account of the trip on page 17 of this issue with photos on the following two pages as well as elsewhere within the publication. Dan Carlson, our lead CDI, also had the opportunity to visit One Porsche Drive, and his story and photos are also included. I highly recommend taking the time to make this journey as you will not regret one moment of your time there. My opportunity was a gift from Lance Dickson at Stevinson Imports, and I cannot thank him enough for thinking of me in this way. I also want to give a shout out to Megan and Craig, two of the customer service representatives at the Porsche Experience Center. They truly made my visit painless and smooth, and the tour put on by Craig was outstanding. I hope you enjoy my recollection and photos and they persuade you to experience this for yourself. Zero To Sixty Russ Rydberg, Editor WANT TO VOLUNTEER? We are alway looking for poelp to help out in various areas of service within the club to lighten some of the work load for those who have already taken the plunge, If you have any questions about volunteering, please contact us at newsletter@rmrporscheclub.com or board@rmrporscheclub.com. The members of the board and I look forward to welcoming you as a new volunteer! Show Us Your Car! You have found the greatest group of car nuts on the planet. Our monthly meetings are loaded with food, beverages, networking with like-minded Porsche People and much technical and social camaraderie. Some of the venues we ve been to before, and some places are new to us. All are interesting and fun. It s all about the people. We all share the love of anything Porsche-related. From real racing or just driving fast in a controlled environment like on the track or autocross, to meeting a mechanic or owner of a car just like yours for a chat about problems and solutions, to washing and waxing in preparation for the weekend tour or car show, you ve found the most precious resource for the care of your car and hobby. Show us your car! Let s see your smiling face! How about a photo of your garage queen s throne room! Share photos from your favorite drive; share the story of your hunt for the favorite car; share the triumph of your first rebuild. That story and those pictures are worth immortalizing in print. We ve all been there; maybe you re experiencing the newness of that first special car. Perhaps you re climbing the ranks in a competitive series of races. Have you found the perfect wash and wax routine to deliver the trophy? (Some secrets are worth sharing.) The point is that the club s members are its true strength. Your membership is your key to unlocking the wealth of knowledge and friendship the club represents. The membership socials are the first step to a deeper understanding, a deeper relationship with your vehicle. Come share the experience! Photos by Russ Rydberg, Editor Letters to the Editor This month s contribution comes from our own Holly Jackson. Holly is a member of the Board of Directors and is also your Membership Chair. She also provides a tremendous amount of help to Erik Behrendsen with the club s social events. Great job with the HighGear magazine! I have been a Porsche owner for many, many years and a RMR club member since In the good ol days (okay, I m older now), we Porsche owners would eagerly greet other owners on the open roads with a quick flash of the lights and/or a welcoming wave. Since there aren t many Porsches on the highways vs other models, it was (and for me is ) fun.but in the last few years my flashes and waves have been met with no response in 80% of the cases. In town theres simply to much going on around us; on the open road, I d like to revive the old save the wave for my fellow proud Porsche owners. I ll keep trying and hope it catches on again. Kent 996 Turbo Boulder I was wondering about something. So I am pretty much excited when I see a Porsche out and about. However I have noticed that the drivers totally snob me. :-( Too much to give a friendly look and a nod? I don t know? Too sensitive? :-) Cornelia Runyon via Facebook Upcoming Event The new Pikes Peak Hill Climb Experience November 12th What: A guided tour of the museum and the history of the hill climb, with the men who made the history! When: November 12th 11:00 at the museum, or caravan to the museum from Perfect Landing after the PBC breakfast. Where: 11 Lake Circle, Colorado Springs, Colorado Who: Chris Lennon, Robert Prilika, David Donner. Why: Because we are lucky! RSVP: Please tomradow@comcast.net with a head count so I can give the museum a heads-up a few days before Nov. 12th. 10 NOVEMBER

They have developed one of the best Driver Education programs in the nation. I did my best to live up to their standards being the uber event chair for the club this year. It gave me an even greater appreciation of what goes into holding these events and keeping them at the high standards our members have come to enjoy. 8 RMR Officer Candidates Nominating Committee recommendations for the RMR Board of Directors for 2017 Continued from page 13 Inaugural Porsche Club of America Treffen Lake Tahoe 2016 Rick Seiferth, 1st Vice President Treasurer - Blair Whitaker I joined RMR-PCA in I have been a sports car owner for over twenty years and finally discovered my first Porsche in early I have participated in the RMR HPDE, open lapping days at HPR, and my first Autocross this fall. I am looking forward to my second year as Treasurer and enjoying the company of other Porsche enthusiasts. Secretary - Mark Taylor I joined RMR-PCA in February 2012 with purchase of a 2006 Carrera S Coupe, Slate Gray, which I am the second owner. Since joining RMR-PCA I have been very active with the social activities and the driving tours. As a member of the advisory committee for these driving events I have helped organize and led run groups for many of the driving tours, and co-chaired the Steamboat Springs Tour the last three years. I am also an active participant in the national events having attended the 2013 Escape to LA in Pomona, CA; 2014 Parade in Monterey, CA; 2015 RennSport Reunion V in Monterey, CA; and 2015 Escape to the Black Hills in Rapid City, SD. My professional background is a civil engineer specializing in highway engineering design, project development, and highway safety analysis. Most of my career was with the US DOT Federal Highway Administration, and since retiring in 2012 I am currently an independent parttime consultant and remain involved in highway design projects. I have found that many of the RMR members appreciate my sharing of highway engineering design, traffic operations and highway safety perspective. I served as RMR Secretary in 2016 and look forward to continue serving as your Secretary for the PCA Rocky Mountain Region in Membership Chair - Holly Jackson PCA HELD the Treffen Lake Tahoe, PCA s inaugural Treffen, from September 7 through September 10, This Treffen was limited to 250 cars and was sold out. Treffens focus on driving, dining and exploring. I traveled with good friends Christine Walters and Mike and Jane Hebert in our pair of 997C4S cars to Tahoe in about 1 1/2 days at just slightly elevated speeds. Driving through the flat lands of Utah and Nevada on the freeway was not that exciting, though once we hit the Reno/Lake Tahoe area the roads became better suited to more spirited Porsche driving. The Treffen was held at the Resort at Squaw Creek in Olympic Valley, CA. In coordination with the Sierra Nevada region, a multitude of driving tours was scheduled on roads on which you could properly exercise your Porsche. During one of our tours to Nevada City a Cayman in our tour group was trying to catch up to the main body when it received special attention from the Nevada State Patrol. Unfortunately, it received a speeding ticket in front of all of the other tour participants, who had stopped for a regrouping session. In addition to the various tours, this Treffen held an off-road excursion for Cayennes and Macans as well as a visit to the Great Reno Balloon Race combined with a stop at the National Car Museum in Reno. While most of the tours departed at around 8:30 in the morning, you had to be up and ready to go at 4:30 a.m. if you wished to see the Reno Balloon Race. In the evening there were great social events. Our favorite was the Tapas & Wine Party held at the resort and a 60s Ski Party held at the adjacent Village at Squaw Valley s High Camp, which was accessed via a tram lift providing great views of the surrounding area. In 2017 two Treffens will be held: one in Austin TX. and the second in Asheville, NC. I have had a great time being your Membership Chair this last year. I have been involved with all the socials and tours as well as many other events. I continue to learn more and more about our club as well as PCA on the whole. I have had the pleasure of meeting a bunch of great people. I really enjoy seeing when people come together to help one another with anything Porsche-related. We have a large club, and I hope to continue to be a part of its continuing growth. I have some great ideas to implement in the coming year. I look forward to another year of serving the Rocky Mountain Region! 14 NOVEMBER

9 Pres EVEN THOUGH this is the November report, I m reporting on September activities because of the due date of the report. So September means Club Racing for Zone 9! Rocky Mountain Region moved their Club Race and HPDE to early September because it was just too hot to have the event in mid-august. Saturday was breezy all day but Sunday wasn t too bad. At least it didn t rain or get unbearably hot. The racing was great, although I didn t have too difficult a job handing out Pirelli hats to the Class winners because the Cup classes were pretty small. I helped out with Timing & Scoring and tried to learn a few things and not make any mistakes! As usual, Rocky Mountain Region hosted a great event all weekend good food, fun racing, good music, fun HPDE what could be better?? The following weekend, I headed to Salt Lake City for Intermountain Region s HPDE and Club Race at Utah Motorsports Campus (AKA Miller). The event was somewhat lightly attended, but everyone there had lots of track time and the racing was great to watch. A few weeks after SLC, I got up at oh-dark-hundred and headed to Albuquerque to join my fellow Roadrunners for breakfast at Porsche of Albuquerque. The dealership is situated perfectly for viewing the hot air balloons, and although we were not treated to balloons flying directly over the dealership, we still had some great views of the hundreds of balloons in the west. There were some new special shapes this year and I would have loved to be closer to the dragon balloon. I always like seeing Darth Vader, and this year Yoda was right next to him. My PCA schedule will be a little busy for the next month or so Parade planning in Spokane, Carrera Region s OktoberFiesta, and Porsche Experience Center (driving a new Carrera S) to round out October. Then in mid-november, I m headed to Ontario, CA, for the PCA Tech Tactics and possibly the LA Auto Show. Hope to see you around the Zone! And if you re vying for the coveted Zone 9 Challenge Trophy, please let me know which Zone 9 Region and PCA National events you ve attended. I already know of a few serious contenders. Liz Shaw Zone 9 Rep In The Zone Elizabeth Shaw, PCA Zone 9 Representative Visiting the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta ON OCTOBER 12 TH, I had the opportunity to experience one on one guidance from Porsche Drive Coach Geoff May at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, Georgia, thanks to a gift voucher I received from Lance Dickson at Stevinson Imports. This experience is truly something you need to get on your To Do list. In addition to all the eye candy you will be treated to when you visit, the driving instruction you receive will greatly improve your ability handle your favorite Porsche model, a Cayman GTS in my case, as well as hone your skills in real world situations. The PECATL campus is comprised of a facility that is 40,000 square-feet of stunning architecture overlooking the 1.6 mile purposebuilt driver development track with a variety of driving surfaces and experiences. Within the structure at One Porsche Dr., you will find the Business Center, where you can reserve one of the many inspiring conference rooms for leadership and team-building activities. Just know that the main windows in all of the conference rooms look out over the track, so you may wish to take advantage of the blackout shades installed on the windows. This is also the home of Porsche Cars North America as well as Porsche Financial Services. The Heritage Center is located on two levels where guests are invited to take a self-guided tour of Porsche s history. Both levels are dynamic in that they are ever-changing and feature displays of vehicles that are rotated on a regular basis. The main floor of the Heritage Center consists of a display of vehicles on loan from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart as well as a collection of vehicles from private owners throughout the United States. I was lucky enough to visit during the time that the original Boxster prototype, unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in 1993, was on display. This was extremely enchanting to me, being and owner of a Boxster myself. The lower level of the Heritage Center, referred to as the Classic Gallery, is an area that displays and showcases customer cars that have been worked on in the Classic Car Workshop or are waiting to be serviced. Also located within the building is the Carrera Cafe, where you can find a quick snack or beverage, and Restaurant 356, where you will experience fine dining of exquisite traditional German food in a venue meant to evoke the style and simplicity of the Porsche 356 interior. Outside, you will find the track with its many surfaces that will serve as your playground. As stated on the PECATL website, this is how the driving experience works: Step 1: Select the model car/cars you would like to drive Step 2: Spend 90 minutes behind the wheel with a Porsche Drive Coach Step 3: Smile and enjoy Repeat as necessary. The track consists of six different surfaces and experiences designed for performance driving and training. The Dynamics Area allows you to experience Launch Control in a PDK equipped model as well as a chance otherwise known as: How to put a permanent smile on your face Russ Rydberg, Editor to test the ceramic composite brakes. The Handling Circuit is a one-mile course designed to mimic a winding road with a number of curves and undulations, like you will find on your favorite back road. The surface is narrow and the guard rails are close, so choosing the correct line and proper application of the brakes are a must. The Low-Friction Handling Circuit has a polished concrete surface with a series of unique, tight curves, with various radius corners. The Off-Road Circuit, which I was really tempted to try, features many obstacles including a creek bed and 45 vertical descent challenge to demonstrate the Cayenne s off road engineering and safety technology. That leaves us with two of my favorite areas for training - the Kick Plate and the Low Friction Circle. These are designed to test your vehicle control skills as you encounter a skid or spin. The Kick Plate is a flush-mounted, hydraulically actuated plate placed before a wetted epoxy surface. As you drive over the plate at a safe speed, sensors move the plate randomly left or right, pitching the rear end of the car to mimic sliding that might occur during inclement weather conditions. This was one of the most difficult modules for me to master. As a teenager, and I am sure I am not alone here, I would take advantage of snowy days to send my car into a slide, but try to correct it and bring it around, you know, Dukes of Hazzard style. But, like I said, I would try very hard to make it a controlled slide... because anybody can throw a car into a spin on ice, and then slam it into a curb. The difference with the Kick Plate is that you do not know which direction the computer will send you. I found myself time and time again trying to anticipate the direction in which we would be thrust, only to have a split-second reaction in the wrong direction, thus actually throwing the car even more into the slide than was intended. And that brings us to my favorite module: The Low Friction Circle. It has a uniform inward slope of polished concrete that is constantly doused by sprinklers. With traction control turned off, the object here is,while driving in a circle, to goose the throttle to make the back end break loose and go into a slide. The ultimate goal is to drift the car around the circle without losing control - just like we see in the movies or at drift competitions. It is so much harder than you would think, but I can say with great bravado that I was able to control the car in a drift through 540 of the circle. I am betting that after that module, I had the biggest smile on my face of the entire day.

13 RMR Officer Candidates Nominating Committee recommendations for the RMR Board of Directors for 2017 Continued from page 14 Newletter Editor - Russ Rydberg I want to thank the nominating committee for considering me to continue as Newsletter Editor again this upcoming year. The past year has been quite a journey. I have become much more involved in the club and its inner workings and I have met so many new people along the way. Over the next year I will strive to continue producing a publication that I am proud of and that you will hopefully enjoy and look forward to receiving. I have only been a member of the club for a couple of years, but I am glad that I decided to take the plunge and not only join, but become involved so that I could help in any way my skill set could be used. I currently own a 2004 Boxster S Special Edition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 550 Spyder and am looking to acquire my second Porsche. Professionally, I lay-out and fabricate high purity fluid and gas delivery systems for industries from Oil and Gas to Semi-conductor and Research and Development. I look forward serving the club for a second year as Newsletter Editor and hope to use what I have learned over the previous year to improve my contribution to the Rocky Mountain Region. Past President - Jim Widrig Jim is serving his second term as Past President (Ex-officio Member) and was a member of the Nominating committee which included John Mackin, Erik Behrendsen, and Dan Carlson. 14 Show Off. Make Your Porsche Shine with Adam s Premium Car Care. Actual customer car shined by Adam s at our Colorado headquarters I SEE YOU, BABY Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. I hereby offer that up, as the tagline for a new device, sure to make your life miserable. It s called Nexar. And it s a smartphone-turned-dashcam app that s supposed to record the habits of nearby drivers. That s right. According to Newsletter No. 401 from the National Motorists Association (NMA) the device, from a fast-growing U.S.-Israeli startup, can record any deviation from the norm driving above the posted speed limit, sudden lane changes, or any other maneuver it deems inappropriate. Then it records the license plate of the vehicle, and uploads it to the Nexar database. The idea is that, the next time you re near a vehicle which Nexar deems has made some sort of egregious assault on the health and welfare of the motorist community, the device will do something to give you a warning. Are you following? Your license plate will forevermore be cited with an automated scarlet letter, telling all the world you re the worst kind of driving scofflaw. The NMA posits that there s a very logical next step to this fun little piece of equipment, providing information to law enforcement, selling it to insurance companies and other bidders who can leverage the information for their own benefit. They state that the device has the potential to make every car on the road a mobile snitch. Now, if it can concentrate on serial tweeters and texters, that might actually be a good thing. But I doubt it. The algorithm won t know a mindless veer into another lane from a swerve to miss a pothole or debris on the road. It won t know that you re moving at a safe and prudent speed, despite the posted limit, or you re stopping hard to bed in those new brake pads or sticky tires. Is this the latest case of Big Brother invading our mobile space? According to the NMA, that s a distinct possibility. They point out the probability of false alerts, like you get from your radar detector. Only the offending motorist will have little recourse. Then there s the fact that some reported behavior may in fact be legal, like lane-splitting by motorcycles in California. But that s not all. The article wonders whether the next step might be a mandatory aftermarket event recorder, which will upload all your driving habits, into the cloud. That way, you no longer physically control the data once that happens, as you do now. They re not kidding. The NMA points out that, in only a few months, every truck will carry an automated log, by law. And this device will, for example, record whether the truck I Get Around Danielle Badler, RMR/PCA Columnist was actually parked when it began a mandatory rest stop, as opposed to looking for a parking space. But wait, you say. In a few short years this will all go away. With the advent of the self-driving car, we won t even pick up our heads from our mobile touch-screens. We ll be oblivious to whether the computer has deviated from the norm. No, for me at least, there s still one big problem. I still plan to drive my Porsche. My classic Porsche, which comes with no driver aids whatsoever. And I was looking forward to a dramatically increased efficiency in traffic flow a result of computer-controlled vehicles moving in electronically enabled lock-step. Which would enable me to enjoy newly cleared wide-open roads. And I was looking forward to a hearty rise in that 85th percentile rule, the rule that says 85 percent of the drivers at any time will operate their vehicles at a safe speed for their vehicles, the road and road conditions. What I am not looking forward to is a letter from my insurance company, informing me that they are jacking up my rates, all because some beater driver is still out there. And the driver has a Nexar sitting on his dashboard, and the device doesn t like how I zipped around him on a freeway entrance ramp. What to do? I don t know. Is Nexar legal in Canada? 15 Porsche Atlanta Driving Experience... The Scoop Text and Photos by Dan H. Carlson, Lead, Chief Driving Instructor Committee I HAD THE PLEASURE to do the Porsche Driving Experience in June here s the blow-by-blow. It was a beautiful Atlanta morning when we arrived at the Porsche facility security gate at 8:30 a.m. WOW, what a venue! Talk about goose-bumps! We got there early to check it out, starting with the assortment of employee-owned Porsches in the underground parking area. Walking through the garage to the building door, your eyes are immediately focused on a beautiful 918 lit up with neon lights. One of my first thoughts was, How much did building this add to the cost of a new Porsche? The facility, which sits on 27 acres next to Atlanta s Hartsfield- Jackson International Airport, has such a cool contemporary look the pictures don t do it justice. It s so uncluttered and spit-shined, and everything is immaculate. There are car displays, showrooms, a company store, two restaurants, a Human Performance Training Facility, Business Center meeting facilities, the Driving Simulator Center, and a Classic Restoration Center, to name a few of them. And next to a restaurant there s a large deck overlooking the driving facility. The track includes areas for driving and performance training, and offers a range of highly customizable technical driving modules. The following words from the Porsche website best explain them: * Dynamics Area: Test the speed, agility and lane-change performance on a large asphalt pad designed to simulate unique maneuvers you may encounter during your daily driving. * Handling Circuit: A one-mile handling course designed to mimic a winding country road with a number of corners and undulations. Here, a driver will learn the finer points on choosing the correct path when negotiating the curves and proper application of braking technique. * Low-Friction Circle: Experience the over-steer capabilities of a Porsche at the low-friction circle with its uniform inward slope and polished concrete surface. * Low-Friction Handling Circuit: A similar polished concrete surface as the Low-Friction Circle, except we introduce a series of unique, tight curves, with a mixture of various radius types on-and-off camber corners. * Kick Plate: We test your vehicle control skills when encountering a skid or spin. The kick-plate is a flush-mounted, hydraulically actuated plate placed before a wetted epoxy surface. As a vehicle travels over the plate at a safe rate of speed, sensors move the plate randomly left or right to mimic sliding that might occur during inclement weather conditions. * Off Road Circuit: Featuring a 1:1 slope, a creek bed, and a 45-degree vertical descent challenge to demonstrate the expansive capabilities of a Cayenne s off-road engineering and safety technology. One signs up to participate on the Porsche Driving website pick your day and two-hour time slot, and the type of 2017 Porsche you want to drive. There are a number to choose from drive a Boxster for $300 on the low end, a 991 Turbo for $750 on the high end, or another model in between. I ll rattle off my behind-thewheel impressions. The instructors are very accomplished and tremendous. The new model Porsches are awesome and extremely quick; was it the new turbos, driving at low altitude, both, or me being used to my good ol # ? It was probably all of the above. The track is much shorter than HPR; it s technical, and the close guardrails make it tight. No helmets and you can have the cabriolet tops down. ABS braking is so good it s almost cheating; in fact, these new Porsches are all cheaters, they drive so well! I recommend doing this if you desire to experience the capabilities of the new Porsches. The facility is built to showcase the latest, to sell cars. To learn high performance driving, stick to our Club s autocrosses and/or Driver Education events. Do I recommend putting this on your Porsche bucket list? YES! 28 NOVEMBER

17 Visiting the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta What We Do Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. DRIVING EVENTS Tour A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event. RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade. Rally A rally is a competitive event in which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type. Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies at least one of each type are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year. Autocross (AX) An autocross is a competition in which drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit. Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade. Driver Education (DE) A driver education event provides a safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming! As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc. RMR hosts six DE s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike s Peak International Raceway tracks. Club Race A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and heats (race sessions), often involving both sprint and endurance races. Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMRhosted First Ever Anywhere club race at Second Creek in Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up! RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend! NON-DRIVING EVENTS Membership Social Membership socials provide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a slide show from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst. Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member! Tech Session A tech session is just what it sounds like a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, do-it-yourself procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear. RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the off months when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d Elegance A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to perfect condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation ( daily driver or full preparation or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as display only, for owners who wish to participate but not compete. RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.
