of the ssoci tions met the provision tht substn tilly ll of the voting rights must be held by frmers In fourfifths of the ssocitions 9 to 1 per cent of the voting members were frmers (tble 2) Nerly ll ptronge refunds which hve been retined in the sso cition in the form of book credits to the ccounts of individul ptrons These credits often re held for period of yers nd then pid in csh on revolving cpitl pln Revolving Cpitl Plns The revolving cpitl pln of finnc ing is being used extensively by frm ers coopertives in Minnesot ome 62 ssocitions, or bout 5 per cent of the totl in the stte, hd merchndise purchsed) verged 68 per cent of net sles in ll of the sso citions combined nd 91 per cent in the locl ssocitions Gross mrgins in the 15 regionl ssocitions were only 5 per cent reflecting the wholesle nture of their ctivities Operting Expenses The rtio of operting expenses to sles verged 62 per cent of sles for ll of the ssocitions combined In 1,19 locl ssocitions operting ex penses were 85 per cent of sles, s compred with 8 per cent in the lrge regionl ssocitions This difference my be explined by the type nd mount of services rendered by the two groups Expense rtios for locl livestock nd grin coopertives verged only 2 nd 29 per cent, respectively, reflecting the limited processing required nd the reltively high sles vlues of the com modities hndled In locl poultry nd egg ssocitions nd the diry ssoci tions the expense rtios verged 16 nd 118 per cent, respectively For ll petroleum coopertives expenses were 18 per cent of net sles nd in ll frm supply ssocitions 1 per cent (tbles 5865) Operting expenses of these ssoci tions showed high degree of reltion ship with the volume of business hn dled Expense rtios were highest for ssocitions with less thn $1, of nnul business volume nd showed declining tendency s volume ws in cresed to the $1,, level nd be yond (tble 66) Incresed volume, in most cses, mde it possible to reduce overhed costs per unit of product hndled nd some other costs s well It is evident tht mny coopertives were operting with volume of busi ness too smll for mximum efficiency In this report only the lbor nd tx expenses were exmined in $17,291, of net mrgins of these coopertives showed close conformnce with this pttern For ll of the ssocitions combined, by fr the lrgest prt of the net mrgins, 91 per cent, ws re funded to the ptrons mixing, trucking, wrehousing, nd others The totl vlue of ll frm products mrketed by these coopertives t midcentury ws $1,7,61,, or 8 per cent of the totl business hndled by these orgniztions (tble 75,
