7 The red eagle from Kurbrandenburg ( Flags in the second half of the 17th century, are mainly for ships built in Havelberg). Parts of two authentic flags from 1675 (retouched photos). One flag was found in a small village near Havelberg, the other was found approx. 40 km away in another village. However, only the back side of the second flag is intact, due to improper storage for many years. According to framing and inscriptions both flags were never used at sea, but were village flags. Although they were manufactured by different manufacturers (judging by the different handicraft and materials used), both show the same form of the eagle and the Kurhut (the hat above the eagle, symbolizing the right to take part in election of the German Kaiser). So one can suppose that these forms were widely used, most probably also at sea and by the military. The appearance of the eagle confirms the contemporary mocking name "red cock. It is striking that both carry neither sword nor breast shield or imperial apple, but only a scepter in one claw. This speaks against the representation in some oil paintings and drawings which has led to a prevailing image of the appearance of this flag.
