2 Important It is essential that you familiarise yourself with the contents of this Manual and the separate Guide to Safe Use of Mains Powered Test Systems before attempting to operate your M500E Test System. Scope This reference manual covers operation of the M500E test stand, intended for use with Mecmesin, AFG, BFG, CFG+ Digital Force Gauges. 6 2. Installation 2.1 Unpacking the stand When you first receive the stand please check that there is no obvious damage to the packaging. If there is any sign that the packaging or the test stand itself has been damaged, please contact Mecmesin or your authorised distributor immediately. Do not use the stand until you have done so. We strongly recommend that the packaging is kept, as this can be useful if the machine needs to be returned for calibration. Section 1 lists items that should be included with your test stand. Please contact Mecmesin or your authorised distributor if any items are missing or damaged. 2.2 Lifting the test stand The unpackaged weight of the test stand is given in the Specification table at the back of this manual. Do not try to lift heavy loads unaided. Use suitable lifting equipment if necessary. 2.3 Locating the stand The test stand should be positioned on a suitable, level, stable work surface. 2.4 Mains power supply The M500E can be used on or V ac Hz supplies. The rear fuse carrier will be set for your local requirement, but is reversible, so should you replace a fuse, the correct local voltage must read in an upright position (carrier and holder arrows align): 2 Mecmesin M500E Test Stand Operating Manual

432-427 for AFG/BFG or 432-131 for CFG+) is attached to the back of a Mecmesin digital force gauge. Slide the gauge sideways onto the dovetail and tighten with the Allen key.

7 3. Assembly and Operation 3.1 Fitting a digital force gauge to the crosshead The M500E has a dovetail bracket attached to the moving crosshead, which tightens by using an Allen key on the embedded screw. A bracket (part no for AFG/BFG or for CFG+) is attached to the back of a Mecmesin digital force gauge. Slide the gauge sideways onto the dovetail and tighten with the Allen key. To prevent damage, do not over-tighten the grub screw in the dovetail when a gauge bracket is not present. Tightening the dovetail when mounting the force gauge Cable management Mecmesin digital force gauges can be used with or without cables (see 3.6: Cycling using load limits), or run from their power supply rather than batteries. It is essential that no cables are permitted to interfere with the emergency stop button. M500E Test Stand Operating Manual Mecmesin 3

This is attached with four bolts using an Allen key. For alignment, the anvil plate can be loosened, moved forwards or back, and the bolts retightened.

8 Clip the cable to the side of the column. Once secured, the cable can be fed through the clip to provide for sufficient movement of the gauge. 3.2 Attaching grips and fixtures For flexible attachment of a variety of accessories, and improved alignment, the M500E is fitted with an anvil plate to accept fixtures with different screw threads. This is attached with four bolts using an Allen key. For alignment, the anvil plate can be loosened, moved forwards or back, and the bolts retightened. Upper grips and accessories are attached directly to the force gauge being used. 3.3 Setting the limit stops There are two manually-set limit stops. These are set by slackening the thumb-screw, moving the stop to a new position, and retightening. When the crosshead meets a stop, it activates a switch. This will stop crosshead movement at an upper or lower limit. Limit stops should be adjusted after grips or holding accessories have been fitted with a gauge, so that the limit positions will prevent unwanted contact between moving and static parts. upper and lower limit stops 4 Mecmesin M500E Test Stand Operating Manual

In a cyclic mode, where the crosshead moves up and down without the operator holding the up or down buttons, the stops will cause the crosshead to reverse direction.

Move the limit stops so that the crosshead can be operated again. 3.

Pushing the button will override all other controls. When pressed, the button stays latched down, preventing any movement of the crosshead. To re-set the button, rotate it about 30 degrees clockwise.

9 In a cyclic mode, where the crosshead moves up and down without the operator holding the up or down buttons, the stops will cause the crosshead to reverse direction. If these stops are set too close either side of the crosshead, secondary safety switches may be activated and an overtravel message will be displayed. Move the limit stops so that the crosshead can be operated again. 3.4 Front panel controls emergency stop speed control speed settings up and down displacement up and down control mode button zero displacement, or exit mode cycle mode Emergency stop button The emergency stop button will stop all movement of the crosshead. Pushing the button will override all other controls. When pressed, the button stays latched down, preventing any movement of the crosshead. To re-set the button, rotate it about 30 degrees clockwise Speed setting The speed control knob increases and decreases the crosshead speed. When used during movement it will change the speed of travel. When used for setting preset speeds, the speed displayed in the front panel display will be used next time the up and down buttons are used. Speed increments at 1 mm/min (0.04 in/min), but the knob can be turned quickly to accelerate to the maximum 400 mm/min (15.7 in/min) or minimum 1 mm/min (0.04 in/min). 3.4.3 Mode button This has two functions, to: preset the speed in each direction, and set units of speed measurement select the movement cycle. 3.4.4 Preset speeds Press and hold the Mode button until the upper speed indication flashes.

To store the setting, either press the Mode button for the next setting, or the Zero button to exit.

5 Select movement cycle Press the mode button normally, to cycle around the movement options: Manual cycle requires the operator to press and hold an up or down button to move the crosshead.

Move between options by pressing the Mode button again. To change a preset speed, turn the speed control knob. To store the setting, either press the Mode button for the next setting, or the Zero button to exit. To change the units of speed, press Mode until the units flash, and use the speed control knob to change between mm/min and in/min. To exit settings at any point, press the Zero button Select movement cycle Press the mode button normally, to cycle around the movement options: Manual cycle requires the operator to press and hold an up or down button to move the crosshead. The crosshead will move at the preset speed for that direction until the button is released or a limit stop is reached. The speed of the crosshead may be adjusted using the speed control knob, and the current speed and direction only is displayed on the front panel. This does not alter the preset speed itself. Single cycle mode will send the crosshead to the limit switch in the direction of the button set. It will then reverse until it reaches the other limit, and stop. Press down to go down to the lower stop and then up to the upper stop, and vice versa. During travel, the preset speed in either direction can be overridden by using the speed control knob. This does not alter the preset speed itself. The crosshead can be stopped at any time by pressing any of the front panel membrane buttons. Continuous cycle mode will send the crosshead up and down between limit stops, and count the number of cycles. The count resets to 000 after reaching 999 cycles. During travel, the preset speed in either direction can be overridden for that cycle only by using the speed control knob. This does not alter the preset speed itself, which will operate from the next cycle. The crosshead can be stopped at any time by pressing any of the front panel membrane buttons. The cycle count automatically resets to zero when continuous cyclic operation is resumed. 6 Mecmesin M500E Test Stand Operating Manual

3.4.6 Zero button The Zero button is used to zero the displacement reading of the crosshead at any time. 3.4.7 Up/Down buttons These buttons control the movement of the crosshead.

The speed of movement is as preset for that direction, but may be changed using the speed control knob.

Press up to begin movement upwards, and down for downwards. In Manual mode (see above) these buttons must be held down. The speed of movement is as preset for that direction, but may be changed using the speed control knob. When moving during a cycle, the opposite direction button will stop the crosshead, not immediately reverse it. To reverse direction during cyclic operation, press the opposite direction button twice. 3.5 Acquiring and using data Mecmesin AFG and BFG digital gauges will store load data gathered from tests, and this can be uploaded to a PC. By linking the gauge to the M500E, and the M500E to a PC, then load and displacement data can be combined and analysed using Emperor Lite software. Information on connecting and using Mecmesin digital gauges, and Emperor Lite, can be found in the respective manuals. To communicate with a PC, the baud rate must match. To set the baud rate from your M500E: Switch off the stand. Hold the Mode button while switching the stand on. Rotate the speed control knob for the required baud rate. Press the Zero button to retain the setting. (The baud rate for Emperor Lite is set within the program.) 12 3.6 Cycling using load limits With an additional cable, a Mecmesin AFG digital force gauge can be used to set load limits to control crosshead movement during a cycle. The stand can then be set to cycle to a maximum load then reverse, for example, or to cycle between two load values, or to detect a break, and stop. Examples Move the crosshead at a given speed until the applied load is 50 N, then reverse at a given speed to the limit switch position. Move the crosshead at a given speed until the applied load is 20 N, then reverse to a zero load, reapply the load, and continue this cycle until stopped by the operator. Move the crosshead at a given speed until the sample breaks (a percentage drop in applied load detected by the gauge) and stop. 8 Mecmesin M500E Test Stand Operating Manual
