Injuries, fatalities and overall operating cost can decrease Impacts availability of buses for revenue Adds to cost of providing transit services Positively impact the public s perception of transit Transit operators less stressful driving

Reducing Transit Bus Side-Collisions* One of the major reasons that side crashes occur drivers cannot see other vehicles or objects in the blind zones of the mirrors of the bus Current mirrors all have some blind zones Less effective during adverse weather (rain or fog) Drivers cannot see vehicles approaching from the side, especially during lane change maneuvers. A Study was performed utilizing side cameras and it was determined that blind zones can be completely eliminated *FDOT: BDK85 Two March 2010

In average daily commutes, drivers change lanes once every 2.76 miles. This increases significantly in suburban rush hour commutes. 1 out of 25 accidents on America s highways today is due to unsafe lane changes and merges; That s approximately 630,000 collisions every year. Trained to look over the shoulder to view blind spot Vehicle Speed Total Head Turn Time 1.6 sec 1.8 sec 2.0 sec 55 mph 129 ft 145 ft 161 ft 65 mph 152 ft 171 ft 190 ft 70 mph 164 ft 184 ft 205 ft Chart shows how far your vehicle travels unattended while your head is turned to check your blind spot.

Benefits of Cameras on Buses: Protect drivers Enforce rider regulations Prevent theft Deter violence Enhance passenger safety Crime investigation

Majority of drivers agreed that: The system reduces or eliminates the side blind zone compared to the mirrors The system can help drivers reduce side crashes by providing a better view In general, the system can improve bus safety With the system they can observe late arriving passengers Drivers would like to have this system on the bus they drive everyday Felt comfortable performing a lane change maneuver with the system The system can help reduce crashes during lane change maneuvers

Based on findings from this study, phase II was proposed to: Investigate the best setup and specification for the enhanced sideview system Integrate camera system with mirror and produce a prototype Deploy with transit agency to evaluate effectiveness of integrated mirror-camera system and collect driver feedback Create specifications for future integrated mirror-camera systems for transit buses
