3 What s New for MY17 Availability G 550 4x4 2 Start of Regular Production: February 2017 Expected Sales Release: April 2017 Introduction Only a G-Class can be better than a G-Class. This is the credo followed by the developers for the Mercedes-Benz G 550 4x4². The basic recipe for this overcomer of everything is simple: take the superior all-wheel-drive powertrain including portal axles from the G 63 AMG 6x6 take away one axle and blend it all with a newly-developed variable chassis and the series-production G-Class body. With portal axles, 3 center-locking differentials, a biturbo 4.0L V8 engine, /55 wheels, carbon-fibre body parts, and a seductive designo interior, it is clear that the G 550 4x4² is the off-road machine of enthusiasts dreams. 7 Technical Highlight Front and Rear Portal Axles On the front and rear of the G 550 4x4 2, portal axles are found. This technology use gears in the hubs to allow the entire axle to sit higher than the wheel centers for increased ground clearance. 12 Unique Selling Points Mercedes-Benz G 550 4x4 2 Individuality With very few units destined for Canada, this vehicle is sure to be an instant classic. It s unlike anything else on or off the road and will attract awe-struck stares wherever it goes. Capability Complete with front and rear portal axles, the G 550 4x4 2 is a force to be reckoned with. Few landscapes or terrains can stop this military-based vehicle from getting to it s destination. My initial fear for the monster has made way for confidence. Confidence in the invulnerability, the indestructibility of the G550 4x4²! It can handle approaches of up to 52 degrees, drive up hills with an incline of 100% and at the same time drive up to 210 km/h on the road. Yes, I want one! Jalopnik 13 The regular G-Wagen seems hard to beat off the road, but thanks to the portal axles, the 4x4² pushes the boundaries of capability to new extremes. We tested the prototype in a half-dry riverbed and on steep, rocky slopes that forced the regular model to throw in the towel the mega ground clearance and the massively superior approach, departure, and breakover angles of the 4x4² allow for scrambling over even the gnarliest terrain. And thanks to the wide track, it feels stable and planted, with a tip-over point virtually unchanged from the basic G.
