44 Sun Pump Getting Familiar with Solar Equipment & Sequence Sun Pumps Terms and definitions Photovoltaic Module (AKA PV Module or Solar Panel) A device able to generate a current and voltage when exposed to visible light or other electromagnetic radiation. Array Direct An electromechanical system exclusively powered by a photovoltaic module. Array direct configurations will operate at variable speeds, depending on sunlight intensity, and will only operate at full potential when sun light is fully exposed on the PV Module Battery Back up A bank of batteries and a charge controller device integrated with PV modules that provide constant current for a period of time even when sun light is low or null. Longer desired run times outside of peak sun hours require a larger amount of batteries and PV Modules. Off-Grid Does not rely on the municipal electrical power grid or similar utility services. Grid-tie A configuration of PV Modules generating power that is directed back into the municipal grid in an effort to run one s electric meters backwards or to receive a commensurate benefit. Inverter System Turns DC power from PV modules and batteries into AC power for loads and grid-connection. Charge Controller Regulates charging and keeps a battery bank from being over or under charged. Specifying Solar Power Generation Systems for Water Features and re-circulating systems. 45 Sun Pump There are a series of questions that need to be answered when starting the technical specification process: 1) What is the target flow rate? The Sun Pump 75 series maxes out at 363 GPH The Sun Pump 1 series maxes out at 58 GPH ANSWER 2) What is the TDH of the re-circulation system? The Sun Pump 75 series maxes out at 7.3 feet The Sun Pump 1 series maxes out at 27 feet ANSWER 3) What kind of system will this pump be running? Pondless (intermittent duty ok) Water Garden/Water feature (requires a minimum water exchange/turnover daily) Koi Pond (continuous duty) Aquaculture System (continuous duty) Pool (continuous duty) 4) How often does the system have to run? Off-Grid Array direct systems will only run as long as there is full exposure of the Sun. (this is the cheapest option compared to the options below) Run time for Off-Grid battery backup systems are determined by the amount of watts generated from the PV modules, the storage and charge capacity of the battery bank, the capacity of a charge controller, and the power consumption (wattage) of the pump. Sequence Pumps coupled with the Yaskawa V1 variable Frequency Drives (VFD): save energy, increase efficiency and allow the pumps to run at different speeds for different performance demands, increasing flexibility, while also adding to the life of the motor by running only at the necessary speed.
