CENACE CENACE The CENACE Corporation (National Energy Control Center) is the ISO of Ecuadorian Power System. CENACE is responsible for the supervision and control of the G-T network of Ecuador. Main functions are: Operation Planning, Economic Dispatch, Real Time Operation with an EMS system. 7
ECUADOR SMART GRIDS SMART GRIDS in Ecuador 8
ECUADOR SMART GRIDS SMART GRIDS in Ecuador REDIE (Redes Inteligentes Ecuador ) Program To increase the efficiency in the value chain, with emphasis on reducing energy losses and encouraging a more efficient energy consumption. To adopt new technologies, with a high benefit-cost ratio, in order to optimize the power system operation. To provide reliable supply of electricity with high quality, to meet the demand at a reasonable cost. To strengthen human resources in order to string along with the innovation processes, organization and development of the electricity sector. To maximize the use of the electrical infrastructure management. Ecuador has a road map for smart grid up to
ECUADOR - SMART GRID ROAD MAP 10
WAMS in Ecuador ECUADOR - WAM NETWORK Since 2010, CENACE has been working with initiatives for implementing wide area monitoring applications. This consists mainly of: Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), high-capacity communication systems through fiber optics and applications designed to process data sent by PMUs. 11

ECUADOR - WAM NETWORK WAProtector, ELPROS Web-based interface Main Features: Real-time monitoring (polar plots, 2D and 3D ) Stability assessment applications Data archiving (access to historical data, option to export data for further analysis outside the system) 13
ECUADOR SYSTEMIC PROTECTION SCHEME SPS Systemic Protection Scheme The electric system, in a stressed state (with double contingencies in 230 kv ring), can cause a system collapse. An Intelligent (computer based) system protection scheme (SPS) is being implemented to mitigate the N-2 contingencies The SPS was designed with high flexibility and expandability. D. Perip a Baba Zhora y Pa ute Pucar á Agoy án S. Francisco 14
ECUADOR SYSTEMIC PROTECTION SCHEME SPS 15 15
ECUADOR SYSTEMIC PROTECTION SCHEME SPS The stream of synchrophasor measurements arrive every second After computation: pre-calculated clusters of generator and loads to be dropped are selected 16
ECUADOR SYSTEMIC PROTECTION SCHEME SPS Systemic Protection Scheme The SPS design must trip specified generation and load in 170 ms or less following fault inception on a pair of 230 kv lines comprising a corridor, causing an SPS contingency. CENACE is in the bidding process for the implementation of the SPS. According to the work schedule, the SPS will be installed in late 2013 and fully operational in early
ECUADOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS Future Developments The CENACE actual challenge is to develop a highly integrated WAMC scheme that enables the closed loop comprising real time wide-area situational awareness and enhanced grid control and operations, integrated with actual EMS system. 18
