1 Small Grain News Tulare County Vol. 7, Issue 2, October 2010 Kings and Tulare Small Grain Variety Performance Trials Steve Wright, Jorge Dubcovsky, Lalo Banuelos, Phil Mayo, Diane Prato, Sara Avila Small grain variety tests were conducted at multiple locations throughout California, coordinated by Wheat Breeder Jorge Dubcovsky. The results from Kings and Fresno Counties small plot trials are shown on the following pages. The regional wheat, barley and triticale trials in Kings County were conducted near Corcoran and at the Westside Research and Extension Center in Five Points. An Agronomy Progress Report containing more detailed results from all trials is available at or on the Tulare County website at The 2010 cool weather delayed crop development and wheat harvest by about 10 days. In 2010, weather conditions were ideal for wheat stripe rust, but there was no major development of wheat stripe rust, unlike other previous wet years. However, stripe rust did occur in fields with a few susceptible wheat varieties and several triticale varieties. Wheat varieties have different levels of genetic resistance to stripe rust and, as several new races of rust develop, the resistance breaks down. Often, our best silage varieties are also the high yielding grain varieties with high protein, resistance to disease and resistance to lodging and early maturing. A dual purpose variety gives options particularly when grain prices are high and silage prices low or vice versa, or when water may be limited. Choose more than one variety or grain type to reduce the impacts of weather, disease, harvest schedules, and economics. First and foremost, select and plant varieties with good resistance along with high yield potential. Secondly, a well-timed fungicide application was shown to reduce the yield loss even in resistant varieties when weather conditions favor the disease. Stripe Rust resistance based on observations from the University of California statewide variety tests: Highly Susceptible: Yecora Rojo, Dirkwin, Summit Susceptible: Blanca Grande, Anza, Duraking, Kronos, Orita Moderately Susceptible: Express Moderately resistant-susceptible: Joaquin, Pacheco, Topper Moderately resistant: PR 1404, Desert King, Clear, White, Trical 105,Trical 118, Westmore Resistant: Cal Rojo, Expresso, Redwing, Ultra, Blanca Royale, Blanca Fuerte, Christallo, Paloma, Platinum, Fortissimo,Volante, Laria, Camelot, Crown, Westmore, Lassik. 4437B S Laspina St, Tulare, CA Phone (559) Fax (559) Web Site cetulare.ucdavis.edu U.S. Department of Agriculture, University of California, and Tulare County Cooperating
2 2010 California Wheat Variety Survey California Wheat Commission Total 2010 estimated wheat planted in California was down approximately 6% from last year's estimated plantings. White and Red variety acreage increased by approximately 9%, however only 48% of last year's Durum acreage was planted this year. Non-durum acreage showed increases in all regions except for the Coast region (very wet) and the Northern CA region (water uncertainties). Timely rains increased non-durum plantings in Southern CA. CALIFORNIA S RED AND WHITE WHEATS: Red wheat estimated planted acreage was up significantly over last year (16%). Hard white wheat plantings were also slightly up. Many San Joaquin durum growers shifted to red wheat due to its price advantage this year. Overall, Joaquin and PR1404 topped the list of hard red varieties planted throughout the state at ~120,000 acres each. Ultra, Redwing, and Cal Rojo each accounted for 50,000+/-acres each. Blanca Royale (San Joaquin Valley) and Blanca Fuerte (Sacramento and San Joaquin regions) had the largest acreage of Hard White wheat with 36,500 and 27,000 acres, respectively. Soft white wheat plantings are projected to be down significantly due to lack of water. DESERT DURUM: After 2 years of larger-than-average Desert Durum wheat plantings, Southern CA is back to "more normal" wheat acreage with approximately 59,000 acres in the region. The San Joaquin Valley region, however, had its smallest estimated planted durum acreage since 1995, mainly due to depressed durum prices. Orita, Desert King, and Havasu were the predominant varieties planted in Imperial Valley this year, whereas Platinum dominated plantings in the San Joaquin Valley.
