Showing proof of 2013 AMA renewal with the AMA receipt is no longer accepted. Also 2012 AMA cards are no longer valid after 31. As of 1 January 2013, you must have your 2013 AMA card in order to continue flying at the PPRC field. These changes are due to liability and insurance reasons. 2) Club Treasurer Adam Huffington, went over the club s October expenses. The club did not make any major purchases. 3) Club Safety Officer Rick Pauin, talked about the hazards of inducted-fan aircraft. Now that more of them are appearing at the airfield, be aware of the potential of internal blades separating and shooting through the fuselage. 2 RC Flying and Skin Cancer By Keith Davis Show & Tell Item - I Duane Zinke s Foam-Board Kaos The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) magazine published a very informative article in their September 2012 issue (page 47). It was titled Skin Cancer and the Aeromodeler. I hope everyone got a chance to read the article, since our flying field is at 6,000 feet, one of the highest RC fields in the country, so it does effect everyone that flies out there. Joseph Gadzia was the author of the 3-page article, to include a few photos of facial skin cancer. But I highlighted some the really important facts within the article: Three most common types of skin cancer: 1. Melanoma skin cancer 2. Basal cell carcinomas of the skin (BCC) 3. Squamous cell carcinomas of the skin (SCC) If you notice suspicious spots on the skin see a dermatologist as soon as possible. Ultraviolet A and B. UVA / UVB. Effects DNA. You should always use sunscreen and protective clothing, especially if you are fairskinned. Use sunscreens Sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 45 and it blocks both UVA and UVB radiation. Wearing a hat for every inch of brim on the hat, decreases the risk of getting cancer on your face by 10%. ABCD of cancer Does the mole have Asymmetry. Does the mole have irregular Borders. Does the mole have different Colors. Does the mole have a Diameter greater than 6mm. Does the mole bleed, sore, will not heal. Duane decided to modify his Kaos by adding a turtle deck to it. It also has an old.50sx 2- stroke engine, 60 wingspan and weighs about 5 pounds. Duane expects the plane to be an easy flyer. PPRCC Newsletter 2

USAFA Visit By Keith Davis Show & Tell Item - II Larry Sipes Kit-Built P-61A Black Widow Once again, we had the pleasure of having Dr. Billy Crissler and a few USAFA cadets pay a visit to the December club meeting. Dr. Crissler spoke about the current USAFA RC flying program, which is in need of many improvements. For 3013, he also wants to get more of the local RC clubs involved in much of the USAFA s RC flying programs. Dr. Billy Crissler speaks to the crowd about the USAFA s current RC airplane program. For 2013, the USAFA hopes to have indoor flying at the field house started up again, various clubs participate in USAFA aeronautical projects and USAFA cadets participate in local RC club events. Dr. Crissler stated that he has lots of big goals and objectives for the USAFA, but it can be done with the help of the local RC flying clubs! Support Your Local Hobby Store! Support Your Local Hobby Store! Larry brought in his P-61A, going on 10 years building still in progress. When complete, the plane will have 15 servos, OD green color scheme, weigh pounds and functional spoilers (no ailerons) just like the real P-61. PPRCC Newsletter 3

All About WarBirds Article sent in by Curt Hughes This story has been in the news for about a year now, but club member Curt Hughes just sent me the latest update on this amazing find. Thanks Curt! planes will further strengthen relations between Burma and Britain." The British Embassy described the agreement as a chance to work with Burma's new reformist government "in uncovering, restoring, displaying these fighter planes." "We hope that many of them will be gracing the skies of Britain and as discussed, some will be displayed here in Burma," said an embassy spokesman, using the old name for Burma. Not everyone was pleased with the decision, however. The Boultbee Flight Academy, a British facility dedicated to the iconic plane, had hoped to aid in the recovery work. I have not seen any official pictures yet, but this is a WWII picture of a Spitfire being uncrated. This is similar to what the crated Spitfires in Burma would look like. YANGON, Myanmar Burma has signed a deal with a British aviation enthusiast to allow the excavation of a World War II treasure: dozens of Spitfire fighter planes buried by the British almost 70 years ago. Aviation enthusiast David J. Cundall discovered the locations of the aircraft after years of searching. The planes are believed to be in good condition, since they were reportedly packed in crates and hidden by British forces to keep them out of the hands of invading Japanese. The excavation of the rare planes is slated to begin by the end of October. The Myanma Ahlin daily reported that the excavation agreement was signed Tuesday by Director General of Civil Aviation Tin Naing Tun, Cundall on behalf of his British company DJC, and Htoo Htoo, managing director of Cundall's Burma partner, the Shwe Taung Paw company. "It took 16 years for Mr. David Cundall to locate the planes buried in crates. We estimate that there are at least 60 Spitfires buried and they are in good condition," Htoo Htoo Zaw said. "This will be the largest number of Spitfires in the world," he said. "We want to let people see those historic fighters, and the excavation of these fighter The Supermarine Spitfire. Considered by many as the most elegant fighter of WWII. "We are concerned that any Spitfires discovered under the current agreement could be dispersed with no long term value to either to Myanmar or the United Kingdom," a spokeswoman said. "We hope that Mr. Cundall will confirm that at least some of any Spitfires excavated are put to use in building new cultural and educational ties between Myanmar and the United Kingdom. Burma has since last the past year turned away from many of the repressive policies of the previous military government and patched up relations with Western nations that had previously shunned it. Did You Know? The early Spitfires and Hurricanes had red tape on the leading edges of their wings for a reason. It all started with the Battle of Britain. The pilots required quick turnarounds of ammo and fuel after completing a mission. So in order to save time, it was decided to cover the gun ports with red tape. When the planes returned from a mission, the ground crews could quickly see if the plane had fired its guns and required ammo. If the tape was not broken, that meant that the guns were not fired and they could go directly to refueling the plane. PPRCC Newsletter 4

So, What is This Airplane? By Keith Davis Show & Tell Item - III Charles Messer s Horizon Hobby T-6 Texan II Clue #1: This plane has one of the longest records of civilian airplanes built and modified over the years From 1962 until Clue #2: In Poland, this airplane is used as the primary trainer for most private pilot s license training. RC version of this unknown airplane. Last month s airplane was a Junkers G.38. Gus Grissom and Tom McCallum had the correct answer. Tom added a little more info about the plane: The plane is a Junkers G were built in Germany. In 1930 Mitsubishi bought the license to build and built 6 as military/bomber/transport, designated as Ki-20. Carried a crew of 7 with mechanics on board to service the engines in flight. It was equipped with 2 diesel, 12 cylinder engines and 2 L8 inline 6 cylinder engines with a combined hp of In 1931 the plane was re-engined with 2 L8 and 2 L88 for a combined hp of Carried a total of 30 passengers + 7 crew. Charles brought in a very nice, highly detailed T-6 Texan II. He has not flown it yet but it s ready to go with an OS.75AX engine, 71 ws and weighs about 9 pounds. Charles said installing the mechanical retracts was the hardest thing to add on the plane. PPRCC Newsletter 5

Wing-Tip Devices Article from Wikipedia Wingtip devices are usually intended to improve the efficiency of fixed-wing aircraft. There are several types of wingtip devices, and though they function in different manners, the intended effect is always to reduce the aircraft's drag by partial recovery of the tip vortex energy. Wingtip devices can also improve aircraft handling characteristics and enhance safety for following aircraft. Such devices increase the effective aspect ratio of a wing without materially increasing the wingspan. An extension of span would lower liftinduced drag, but would increase parasitic drag and would require boosting the strength and weight of the wing. At some point, there is no net benefit from further increased span. There may also be operational considerations that limit the allowable wingspan (e.g., available width at airport gates). Wingtip Fence The device is attached to the wingtip and extends above and below the wing. This was the early design of wingtip devices. Wingtip vortices looking from rear of plane. Standard wingtip on the left, Winglet on right. Wingtip devices increase the lift generated at the wingtip (by smoothing the airflow across the upper wing near the tip) and reduce the lift-induced drag caused by wingtip vortices, improving lift-to-drag ratio. This increases fuel efficiency in powered aircraft and increases cross-country speed in gliders, in both cases increasing range. U.S. Air Force studies indicate that a given improvement in fuel efficiency correlates directly with the causal increase in the aircraft's lift-to-drag ratio There are three types of wingtip devices currently used on today s airplanes; The wingtip Fence, the Winglet and the Hoerner Wingtip. They all have different designs and looks, but all designed for the same purpose. You can also find wingtip devices on some of today s RC airplanes. Let me know if you notice an increase in fuel efficiency! Winglet - Built as part of the wing and curves up. Also called a blended wingtip or Shark s Fin. Hoerner Wingtip Built as part of the wing and curves down. Primarily used on gliders and small aircraft. PPRCC Newsletter 6

Sabre Dog In the News By Keith Davis Show & Tell Item - IV Ben Woofter s Balsa USA Kit J-5 Cub This F-86D Sabre Dog turbine jet hit the streets (or should I say the airways?) earlier this year. Club member Greg Moore had the pleasure of test-flying the prototype for the first time at the 30 th Southwest Jet Rally. He also wrote a product review article on the Sabre Dog. He gave it a great review. Although a poor picture copy, it shows Greg s F-86D on the front page of the AMA magazine. Greg redid the color scheme to replicate the Colorado Air National Guard. An actual F-86D of the Colorado Air National Guard can be seen at the Pueblo Air Museum. Club members Gus Grissom and Rod Hart also owns one of these jets. For more details about the jet, you can talk to any of those lucky pilots! Support Your Local Hobby Store! Ben is working on a ¼ scale J-5 medical Cub, complete with a functional liter access hatch and stretcher. The plane will have a 110 ws, powered by a DLE 30 gas engine, cub yellow colors and military markings. So far, so good! PPRCC Newsletter 7

Beware, Ducted Fans in the Air! By Rick Paquin the Safety Guy Show & Tell Item - V Rick Paquin s Safe Hack EDF Viper Jet They re small, they re fast and they can be just as dangerous as a propeller-powered airplane. Don t let the size fool you. These ever popular Electric powered, Ducted Fan (EDF) aircraft are great to fly but they have their hazards too. First of all EDF jets carry LiPo batteries. The battery can expand, catch fire or explode in a crash, If you have a crash, expect a damaged battery! Secondly, despite their small size, these jets are fast! You can easily lose sight of the jet if you are distracted or not paying attention to what you are doing. Losing sight or losing control of your jet can become a speeding projectile heading towards an unsuspecting crowd. Those tiny little blades can become flying fragments if the motor comes apart. And lastly the jets can be a hazard on the ground too. Accidentally bumping the throttle or the EDF motor decides to come apart while test running it on the ground. The blades can easily tear through the fuselage. With Christmas just around the corner, we can expect to see more EDF jets at the airfield next year. Have fun with your new toy, but be safe with your new toy too! The popular Park Zone Flyer EDF Habu. Rick presented one of his latest jets, the 70mm ducted fan Viper. It carries a 5 cell LiPo battery, fixed landing gear and only weighs five pounds. Rick kept the original colors on the Viper and it has not flown it yet. PPRCC Newsletter 8

Show & Tell Item -VI Joe Jacobson s LT-40 Kadet Kit Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013! By Keith Davis The Pikes Peak Radio Control Club hopes that everyone had a great 2012 flying year and hopes 2013 will be even more exciting. A special thanks goes out to 2012 Club President Kevin Kinzel who spent endless amounts of time working on field improvements. And a special welcome aboard goes out to 2012 VP Doug Ransom who will become the 2013 Club President. The club would also like to acknowledge Chuck Brath for his time and service of mowing the fields with his personal tractor throughout the year. Other names that needs to be mentioned are: Rick Paquin (EC of several club events), Ben Woofter (Always helping and assisting new club flyers), Dan Brunson (Focal point for club information and hobby assistance), Duane Zinke (Instrumental in field maintenance projects), and Rob Waggoner (Assisted in getting the club website up to date and running again). Thanks guys! Joe decided to bring in his first attempt at building a kit, the LT-40 Kadet. Fairly easy to build and easier to fly, Joe hopes to have it complete by springtime. It will have a 70 wingspan and powered by an O.S. engine. Of course there are many, many more names out there that helped in supporting the club during 2012, I just don t have any more room to list everyone! But thanks to all that really helped out to make this club one great club. That includes club member s family and friends that helped out throughout the year too. Let s make 2013 even better!
