3. Installation Connect the electrical power cable to a suitable socket outlet. Ensure when operating the height adjustment and adjustable head and foot sections there is adequate clearance between the outer extremities of the couch and all other building fixtures and equipment. WARNING Make sure that handset and electrical power cables cannot become entangled with moving parts of the couch. Disconnect the electrical power cable from the mains supply before transporting the bed. If the power cord shows any sign of damage, replace immediately. Wrap the electrical cable around the cable retainer only when couch is to be moved. Cable retainer is located on side of base frame. Always hang handset on handset holder located on both sides of frame. Cable Retainer Handset Holder 4
4. Operation Safety Always apply the brakes when the couch is stationary. Before operating the couch, make sure the patient is positioned correctly to avoid entrapment or imbalance. Lower the couch to the minimum height when the patient is left unattended. When the couch is operated, make sure that the obstacles such as other equipment do not restrict movement. Before transporting the couch make sure that couch is at a suitable height for the attendants to move the couch without stooping or straining. Keep these instructions handy for reference. Height, Headrest & Footrest Adjustment When a handset push button is pressed, the appropriate couch function will operate until the button is released. WARNING Some functions may cause injury to the patient if unintentional movement occurs. Backrest Height Backrest Height Footrest 3 SECTION 2 SECTION 5
4. Operation (Continued) Safety It takes approximately 25 seconds to raise the couch from its lowest position to its highest, also incorporated into the actuator is a safety nut, in the event of the actuator ever failing, this feature will stop the couch from collapsing. Note: Unless couch is fitted with optional battery backup unit, it is not possible to operate in case of mains power failure. Brakes and Steering Individual locking castors Couch is fitted with four individual locking brake castors. To operate braking, push down on the brake activation lever on each castor. To disengage the brake, push down on the release lever situated above the brake activation lever. Central locking castors There are two coupled brake pedals at the foot end of the bed. When either pedal is pushed down from the horizontal free position, it operates all brake castors simultaneously and the bed is immobilised. With the pedals in the Horizontal Free position, all the brakes are released and the bed can be moved in any direction. With the pedals in the Up Steer position, a steering castor is engaged at one end of the bed to provide better control when pushing the bed in a straight line. 6
4. Operation (Continued) Safety Sides To lower the side: Hold the top rail towards the middle, (1) pull up and (2) swing outward whilst slowly lowering down(3) in a controlled manner To raise the side: Hold the top rail towards the middle, swing outwards and raise to a vertical position and make sure that both pivot posts drop back inside pivot mount slots (4). Safety Side Operation CAUTION Do NOT use the safety sides to lift or move the couch WARNING Other manufacturer s safety sides are incompatible with the Acero Electric Couch range. Ensure patient s limbs are free from entrapment during Safety Side operation 7
4. Cleaning WARNING Disconnect the bed from the mains power supply before cleaning. Gloves and protective clothing should always be worn when carrying out cleaning procedures. Note: These instructions also apply to accessories. Wipe all surfaces with a soft cloth moistened with hot water and mild detergent (or the hospital s recommended cleaning solution). Take extra care with areas that may harbour dirt or dust. Rinse with clean water and dry with paper towels. To remove potentially infectious material such as body fluids, or when the bed has been used by someone with a known infection, clean afterwards with NaDCC (e.g. Presept, Actichlor) at 10,000 ppm of available chlorine. Rinse and dry. A suitable vinyl cleaner may also be used for cleaning upholstered top. CAUTION Do not use abrasive compounds or pads. Do not use hypocarbonate or phenolic cleaning solutions. 8
4. Maintenance The following preventative maintenance procedures should be carried out at intervals of 12 months or as specified. All service or repair activities must only be performed by properly qualified and trained persons who are approved by ParagonCare. Disposal of product and components should be compliant with local regulations. The following Maintenance Check List should be used as a guide for the parts that are required to be regularly checked or serviced. Item Breaking Castors Base/top pivot bolts/ shafts Side rails Power cable Handset control Mouldings Vinyl top General Maintenance Request Check that the castors run and swivel freely. Remove any threads, fluff and dirt from the axle. Check tyres for wear and that the braking mechanism is functioning properly. Check for excessive wear and tightness of fittings. Replace if necessary. Refer Spare Parts List Check for tightness of fittings Check for damaged leads and plugs. Replace if necessary. Refer Spare Parts List Check for damaged leads and faulty buttons Replace if necessary. Refer Spare Parts List Check for damaged or missing parts and damage to padded vinyl top Replace if necessary. Refer Spare Parts List or ParagonCare Service Dept Inspect welded frame for any signs of damage or defects. WARNING Disconnect couch from the mains power supply before starting any maintenance activity. Couch will still operate on battery backup power if handset buttons are pressed. Avoid skin contact with lubricants. Individual locking castors Checks every six months should be conducted on the castors assemblies in order to check for looseness. To do this, apply the brakes and lift the couch off the floor. Castors should be securely fixed in to the castor tubes. If a problem is found, re-tighten the fixing bolts to the underneath of the castor assemblies. 9
6. Maintenance (Continued) Castors and Brakes (including central locking) Apply the brakes and push the couch forward. If any of the three or four braking castors rotate, the brake is not fully effective. Check the steering lock for efficient operation (central operation only) If either the brakes or the steering lock (central operation only) are not working as they should, contact an approved service agent. Batteries (battery back-up only) If a beeping sound is heard when operating the couch it means that the battery is at low charge. Re-connect the couch to a mains power supply for a minimum of 24 hours so that the batteries can recharge. Check the battery condition every six months using the following procedure: 1. Make sure that the couch has been connected to the mains power supply for an uninterrupted 24 hour period. 2. Disconnect the couch from the mains supply. 3. Apply a load of 80kg to platform. 4. Raise and lower the platform, from minimum to maximum height, three times. 5. If the couch does not operate satisfactory in step 4, perform steps 1 to 4 again. If the couch continues to operate unsatisfactory, it may indicate that the batteries need replacing. In this situation, consult an approved service agent. Handset Checks Between each patient, ParagonCare strongly advises that the Handset is visually inspected for obvious damage before each use if practicable and that Preventative Maintenance checks are conducted on the handset. When using a specific function staff should be aware of, and checking for, any of the symptoms listed in point 3 below. Preventative Maintenance Checks ParagonCare recommends that the full check and testing regime is conducted between each bed use or worst case during annual Preventative maintenance. This should take no more than one (1) minute to complete. 10
6. Maintenance (Continued) Front cover outer label Look for tears or identations over the buttons 1. Visual inspection of handset casing 1.1 Inspect the outer plastic casing for any obvious cracks or damage. 1.2 Inspect for damage to the front cover (outer label) particularly over the buttons where the label may be torn or indented. If any damage is identified while conducting checks 1.1 and 1.2, immediately quarantine the couch and report the damage to maintenance staff or replace the Handset. 2. Visual inspection of the cable and cable insulation: 2.1 Inspect the cable for any nicks or cuts in the insulation 2.2 Inspect for any evidence that the cable may have been squashed or flattened. Squashed or flattened cables may indicate a possible break in the internal conductors or insulation causing conductors to short together which could cause unwanted movement of the bed. Any handsets are found with obvious damage to the cable insulation, immediately report the damage to maintenance staff or replace the Handset. 3. Tactile inspection of the buttons: All buttons should be operated and response tested. Depress each button on the handset. Each button should have a positive audible click that is also felt. The function being pressed should also operate. If the button: Does not have a click feel Does not have an audible click sound Does not immediately operate the function Feels soft offering no resistance Feels different to the rest of the buttons travels further when depressed Immediately quarantine the couch and report the damage to maintenance staff or replace the Handset, otherwise contact a Paragoncare approved Technician. 11
