6 atellite roller screws operating principle Types of roller screws - Operating principle ELM- actuators are fitted with RV screws The main elements of RV satellite roller screws are the screw, nut and satellite rollers. The screw has a multiplestart thread. The angle between the fl anks is 90 and the profi le is triangular. The nut has an internal thread identical to that of the screw. The rollers have a single-start thread with an angle the same as that of the nut. This ensures there is no axial movement between the nut and the rollers. The rollers do not therefore need to be recycled. The fl anks of the roller thread are convex. At each end of the rollers there is a cylindrical pivot and gear teeth. The pivots are mounted in the holes of the end rings, thus ensuring the rollers are equidistant. The end rings are fl oated in the nut body and axially secured with circlips. The gear teeth engage in gear wheels fixed in the nut. This guides the rollers parallel to the axis to ensure perfect functioning. ELM-R actuators are fitted with RVR screws RVR satellite roller screws have very fi ne threads and are used when extremely accurate positioning is required along with high rigidity and load-carrying capacity. The main elements of RVR satellite roller screws are the screw, nut and rollers which are guided and maintained at the correct distance in a cage. The screw has a single- or two-start thread with a triangular profi le. The angle between the fl anks is 90. The nut has the same internal thread as the screw. The rollers are not threaded but have grooves perpendicular to the screw axis. The distance between the grooves matches the exposed thread of the screw and nut. The fl anks are convex and the angle between them is 90. When the screw or nut rotates, the rollers are axially displaced in the nut. After a complete revolution, each roller is returned to its initial position by two cams at the end of the nut. They can be recycled due to a lengthwise groove in the nut. The cage pockets are slightly longer than the rollers to enable them to move axially within the nut. ELM- actuators are fitted with RVI screws RVI satellite roller screws work on the same principle as RV screws except that their nut system is reversed. This means the rollers themselves rotate around the screw (instead of the nut in RV screws) and move axially within the nut. Apart from the screw threading where the rollers orbit, the journal is smooth and may have a special shape (e.g.: anti-rotation). The nut is threaded along its entire length and is much longer than on RV screws. It governs the overall travel of the complete screw and therefore limits it if needed. ELM-R actuators are fitted with RVD screws The RVD differential screw is actually a variant of RV screws. Its components, expertly calculated and adjusted, are used to produce extremely thin threads (less than 0.02 mm). The movement of the rollers in this somewhat complex mechanism does however prevent extensive travel. The nuts are larger than on the RV types. 7 Why are Reckon electro-mechanical actuators fitted with satellite roller screws? The satellite roller screw is similar to the ball screw with the difference that the load transfer elements are threaded rollers. The main advantage of satellite roller screws is that they have a high number of points of contact to support the load. Load capacity and useful life atellite roller screws, like ball screws, use Hertz s law. The main advantage of roller screws compared to ball screws is that their admissible static and dynamic load capacities are higher. The bearing function is provided by threaded rollers instead of balls and the load is spread over a higher number of points of contact. The admissible Hertz pressure is the same for satellite roller screws and ball screws. Thus, satellite roller screws have a static load more than 3 times greater than that of a ball screw. Their useful life is about 15 times greater than that of a ball screw. peed and acceleration atellite roller screws can rotate much faster and support much greater acceleration. RV and BRV satellite roller screws are designed so that the rollers are not recycled. This means that the mechanism can support twice the rotation speed of a ball screw. Reckon actuators replace and improve on hydraulic actuators in all crimping and plug fi tting applications. Due to a servo-gear motor assembly + satellite roller screws + load sensor, our actuators provide dynamic and accurate positioning while controlling the load according to the position. The low operating costs of our actuators often enable the cost of purchase of an electric solution, to replace a hydraulic system, to be recouped in less than 4 years. Depending on the applications the process can be controlled directly by the regulator-positioner, or by a PLC or by numerical control when the servocontrols are very complex. For example, with numerical control, the travel speed, load and position can be managed by giving priority to one or more of these parameters throughout the process. 18

22 Motor Reckon actuators can be fi tted with several types of motor (Reckon or customer supply) Brushless motor (applications with high dynamics) Direct drive of the satellite roller screws (in-line mounted motor) Advantages: No mechanical play Maximum effi ciency No mechanical wear Maintenance-free Brushless motors with hollow pin: Induction motors: Induction motors have a genuine economic advantage in cases where applications do not require a large dynamic range. Advantages: cheaper than Brushless motors Disadvantages: - Bulkier - Less dynamic Motors assembled on different types of speed reducers - Advantages: very high torque for applications that require signifi cant loads. - peed reducers with reduced play: 0 to 20 of play depending on the models The satellite roller screw is fastened directly to the motor, which reduces the overall length of the actuator. Parallel 90 elbow In-line ervo-control of electric actuators Regulator-positioner There are several options: The displacements to be performed are programmed in the regulator and can be launched via the regulator s digital inputs. A single electrical contact is enough to command the displacement. Displacement commands are sent by a PLC via a fi eldbus (CANopen, PROFIBU, etc.). The operator can enter the positions, speeds, accelerations, number of cycles, etc., on a display with digital keypad. Control by numerical control The numerical control (or PLC) sends a speed or torque setpoint (+/- 10 V) to the regulator. The regulator feeds back the position of the actuator s numerical control via a signal encoder. Upon request the actuators can be fitted with original outlet and limit of travel sensors. Wherever possible, it is best to place these sensors on the machine rather than on the actuator. 19

Fast and accurate positioning ignifi cantly lower power consumption than a hydraulic unit or compressor, - An electric actuator only consumes power when in operation. - Even at high speeds, an electric actuator does not need a cooling system (unlike a hydraulic solution) - In almost all cases, the cost of replacing a hydraulic actuator by an electric actuator is recouped over a period of less than 4 years with savings in power consumption. If the maintenance of a hydraulic failure + risks of breakdown are taken into account, the cost is recouped twice as fast.
