4 Description General 3TM vacuum contactors the new contactor generation 3TM vacuum contactors are load breaking devices with a limited short-circuit making and breaking capacity. They can be used for high switching rates of up to one million electrical and mechanical operating cycles and/or unlimited operating time. 5 Description Construction and mode of operation Applications 3TM vacuum contactors can be used for operational switching of AC circuits of any kind, such as: Three-phase motors for reversing, inversing or direct duty in AC2 to AC4 operation Transformers Capacitors, also back-to-back Resistive consumers, AC1 operation They are used in conveying and elevator systems, pumping stations, air conditioning systems, as well as in systems for reactive power compensation, on ships, in open-cast mining and in stationary and rolling railway operation, and can therefore be found in almost every industrial sector. Switching medium 3TM vacuum contactors make use of vacuum switching technology, which has been proven and fully developed for more than 40 years. Siemens vacuum interrupters operate constantly and reliably throughout their entire service life without any maintenance. Design and function 3TM vacuum contactors are based on a modular system. They mainly consist of: A high-voltage part with vacuum interrupters, with customer connections, and position indicator A low-voltage part with the common magnetic actuator Control electronics for the magnetic actuator and release; here also plug connectors for the supply voltages Auxiliary switches, freely accessible from the side Optionally, a closing latch, as well as a manual latch release (emergency off), and a shunt release. The high-voltage part consists of individual, independent pole shells, which can take up the corresponding vacuum interrupters. In this way, various pole-center distances are possible. The vacuum interrupters are operated by a common magnetic actuator. This magnetic actuator is optimized for a very low holding power in continuous operation. The auxiliary switches are located at the side of the operating mechanism and are freely accessible from the outside. A mechanical closing latch and corresponding latch release modules can be ordered separately. Remote tripping takes place via an electromagnetic shunt release. It represents the kinematic connection between the magnetic actuator and the vacuum interrupters. In case of non-excited magnet, the return springs (10) keep the drive lever in OPEN position. Thus, point B of the drive lever is in its upper position. At this point, the drive lever (3) acts on the guide nut (5) of the vacuum interrupter via the bearing (4). In this way, the contacts are separated from each other against the external air pressure, and thus kept in OPEN position. For closing, the magnet coil (9) is excited. The magnet armature (8) attached to the drive lever (3) is thus attracted by the magnet system against the force of the two return springs (10). Hereby, point B of the drive lever moves into its lower position. This releases the guide nut (5) of the vacuum interrupter (11), so that the external air pressure can press the moving contact towards the fixed contact. The drive lever (3) compresses the contact pressure springs (12), thus generating the necessary contact force. The operating mechanism is designed in such a way that the guide nut (5) does not touch the bearing (4) in CLOSED position. This ensures that the CLOSED position is always reached completely. The distance between the bearing (4) and the guide nut (5) in CLOSED position is used by the magnetic actuator as acceleration path for opening. Closing latch The magnetic actuator of the 3TM vacuum contactor can be operated with AC or DC. When the 3TM vacuum contactor is closed, the closing latch is activated. After reaching the latching position, the control voltage of the 3TM vacuum contactor is separated from the voltage supply. Opening takes place via: Electromagnetic latch release, or Manual mechanical latch release (emergency off). Modes of operation and operating directions: Mechanical latch release (emergency off) Closing and opening delay The 3TM vacuum contactors have a natural closing and opening time. MLFB supplement J67 for pushing towards A J69 for pushing from below towards C (without latch release mechanism) J68 for pulling towards B However, they can also be configured with an additional closing and opening delay, for selective operation with other contactors or fuses. 7 Description Construction and mode of operation Mounting position Mounted on the wall, vertical position The 3TM vacuum contactor can be mounted both in vertical and in horizontal position: As fixed-mounted design Mounted on a withdrawable part or a truck. Site altitude 3TM vacuum contactors can be used for various site altitudes. As a standard, 3TM vacuum contactors can be used for 1250 m to m above sea level. For higher site altitudes, a configuration is offered for 2000 m to 5000 m. Heavy duty operation Mounted on the wall, 180 vertical position *) Observe distance to high voltage! Lying on the back, horizontal position Altitude correction factor K a For very heavy mechanical stress such as earthquakes or extraordinary shock and swinging loads, a special configuration is offered. Ambient conditions 3TM vacuum contactors are designed for the normal operating conditions defined in the standards, and can be used for the climatic classes according to IEC described in the following. Condensation can occasionally occur under the environmental conditions shown. 3K4 (climatic conditions, EN 60721) 3B1 (biological conditions, EN 60721) 3M3 (mechanical conditions, EN 60721) 3C2 (chemically and mechanically active substances, environmental conditions EN 60721). Dielectric strength The dielectric strength of air insulation decreases with increasing altitude due to low air density. According to IEC , the values of the rated lightning impulse withstand voltage and the rated short-duration powerfrequency withstand voltage specified for 3TM vacuum contactors apply to a site altitude of 1000 m above sea level. For an altitude above 1000 m, the insulation level must be corrected. 8 Description Switching duties, tests and standards Utilization categories In IEC , vacuum contactors are divided into different utilization categories. The opposite table shows typical applications in accordance with the respective utilization category.
