19 Student Spotlight 19 A robot controlled by your brain? It s more real than you may think. Daniela was honored at the 2013 VEX Robotics World Championships as the youngest inductee into the STEM Hall of Fame for her accomplishments. Today: winning a science fair. Tomorrow: changing the medical world through robotics. At least, that seems to be the path that 13-year-old Daniela Rodriguez is following. Daniela is a passionate young engineer with a knack for robotics and programming. Her latest project is a robot (named Steve) built on the VEX platform and controlled by the human mind. Daniela was inspired to create Steve when she saw her mom Jeanine, who has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, struggle to get around even with a walker. She knew that there had to be a way that technology could help the lives of the disabled. Using a VEX robot and a special head unit that captures a user s brain activity, Daniela designed an interface that transfers nerve impulses (such as raising your eyebrows) to physical actions (such as driving forward). Her exhibit, Can Our Brainwaves Move Robotic Equipment? won Best in Fair against over 900 finalists at the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair. It has been noticed by several prosthetics and engineering companies, and is on its way to being adapted to control wheelchairs and other real-world applications. We applaud Daniela and her use of robotics to solve a very real problem, and we look forward to seeing what others are able to do with her designs. It s the perfect example of how a passion for STEM learning can open doors, sometimes literally, for those who embrace it. vexrobotics.com phone

36 36 Multi-Application The learning possibilities with VEX are infinite. LEWIS CHAPPELEAR, California Teacher of the Year, 2008: In a school in which not all the kids are there to become engineers, doctors and lawyers, robotics nonetheless brings absolute relevance to the classroom. Robotics gets all of the kids excited about learning, and it also teaches the soft skills they will need in life and to keep jobs working as a team, problem solving, working with the community. Everything is interconnected. VEX Robots are such a highly versatile and immensely popular platform, it should come as no surprise they can be utilized a myriad of ways. Aside from the three main VEX sponsored competitions, there are a host of other tournaments that have also adopted the VEX platform. Some are national, but many are actually homegrown local competitions initiated by high students and their mentors. The Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association (OCCRA) is one great example. Started by students from Oakland County, Michigan, adults are actually banned from design or build in OCCRA - it s 100% student-run. Another place you can discover exciting ways to use VEX is RobotEvents.com. This wonderful portal connects students, mentors, schools and communities to a variety of successful and engaging Excerpted from Autodesk VEX Robotics Curriculum Spearheading Education, Robot magazine, Jan/Feb technology-based programs. 39 Extra Curricular Competition 39 Presenting a robotics competition of global proportions. The year-long VEX Robotics Competition, managed by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation, features students from more than 32 countries (on over 10,000+ teams) playing in over 700 regional tournaments worldwide. This is by far the largest and fastest growing middle and high school robotics program globally. Throughout the school year, students, with guidance from teachers and mentors, design and build innovative robots to most efficiently and quickly solve the particular challenge of each year s competition. This requires a great deal of strategic thinking, engineering, programming, creativity and teamwork. All this hard work culminates with the annual World Championships - a three day showdown between the best VEX robotics teams from around the globe. It s quite a spectacle indeed. And while the atmosphere is electric and the competition intense, it s clearly all in good spirit. The kids have a blast, making friends and forming strategic alliances with their fellow competitors from different states, countries and cultures. Parents are equally excited, which is key, because their support helps to perpetuate their child s interest in STEM outside the class. It s a win-win all the way around, regardless of who goes home with a trophy. Visit RobotEvents.com for more information on the VEX Robotics Competition and to find events near you. VEX is the most compelling robotics option out there. The competition component is just phenomenal. It s socially engaging, fosters collaboration, and the games themselves give the kids an adrenalin rush! The competitions capture the kids imagination. And that s a huge part of education. JIM SCHULTE, President of the CREATE Foundation It s exciting to see how high school teams are drawn to the thrill of competing for technology s top honors through these intricate VEX robots. These kids work for months - designing, refining and building. It s a great way to build team spirit but even more to generate interest in the math and science fields, which are key elements in developing tomorrow s workforce. JEFF TJIPUTRA, D.Sc.
