1 Robotic Vehicle Challenge Hello and welcome to your first team challenge! Within this document you will find information about what to expect and prepare for to be successful in your first challenge. In this challenge your team s designed robot will be wirelessly navigating a mock lunar surface using only a camera for vision in order to complete particular tasks. Challenges: Teams will be challenged with completing three categories of tasks. The three tiers represent different difficulty levels. Manipulating a Lego ball and transporting it across lunar surface Manipulating a Lego ball and acquiring data printed on it Navigating the lunar surface Challenges will be scored according to difficulty level. Challenges must be completed in a limited time. Lunar surface has craters, inclines and declines that must be navigated carefully. Robot Specifications: Ground clearance of at least 2.5cm from point of contact with a surface to the lowest section of the robot. Incur a penalty for robot weight over 1.5 kilograms. Robot must include a place to mount a camera (D imensions: 1.45 x 1.45 x 0.8 ) Schematics for partial robot designs and a full robotic arm are provided with which teams will attach together by their own innovation. Teams are free to design and construct their own robot if desired, adhering to the above specifications. Scoring: Teams will be allocated a limited mission budget. Just like in real space launch missions, weight can adversely affect a budget. It will cost teams extra for additional weight past the requested 1.5kg. No additions for being underweight. Also to consider is the team s efficiency of programming. Because it costs money to send programs, becoming familiar with how your team s robot moves and having a solid understanding of program structuring will play a key role in reducing the number of programs needed, and ultimately your success. The last thing that will affect budget will be completing given tasks. For each task the team completes, they will be awarded money back into their budget. Aside from the budget, tasks will be of varying difficulties with points awarded for completing them. When the competition is over, whatever money is leftover will be converted into points. The team with the most points in total at the end will be the winners. Other Information: Robots will be operated and programmed from a computer via Bluetooth. Teams will use a wireless color camera (and any sensors chosen) to navigate the lunar surface.

2 What s in the Kit: The following chart gives a list of parts that are given to you and your team. These are all of the parts at your disposal (don t lose them!). We have included all of the parts given in a NXT Education Base Kit and added extra parts we think may be of use or are necessary to build and complete the given schematics. You will also find two CDs in your package, one labeled Lego Mindstorms NXT Software and the other Lego Digital Designer. On these discs are the files necessary to download and install the NXT software, Lego Digital Designer, and block imports. To import the blocks please see the document titled Acquiring Lego Digital Designer (LDD) and the PID and Multiplexer Programming Blocks. The first few steps in each section can be skipped because the files are already located and downloaded onto the CDs for you.
