3 Electronic overload relays Modular in design, clever in application The new CEP 7-EE overloads now offer a formidable range of smart add on modules. These small side mounted plug-in modules extend the CEP 7 capability to something more potent in terms of motor protection. Communication modules are also available. 27 A CEP 7 comprehensive motor protection Sprecher + Schuh have introduced their new CEP 7, second generation electronic overload protection relays. The new CEP 7 overloads incorporate a greater use of sophisticated electronic control and monitoring. With recent advances in micro electronic technology and the introduction of the ASC chip set, it has become possible to improve on and add new features to the popular CEP 7 range. The CEP 7 second generation overload now incorporates greater accuracy and versatility whilst providing increased overall protection. Range overview CEP 7-ED basic model The CEP 7-ED is the standard or base model version. The ED model is available in the current range of A, incorporates a fixed trip class of, and is suited to 3 phase operation. A manual reset function, visible trip indicator and test / reset button are also included. CEP 7-EE enhanced model The enhanced CEP 7-EE variant covers an operating range of. - 8 A with adjustable trip class settings of, 5, 2 and 3 (via dip switch selection). The EE model can be further enhanced by the addition of side mounted plug-in modules. CEP 7-E_P pass through model For current ranges - 27 A a version is available that mounts separate from the contactor. The motor wires pass through CT openings. Superior phase failure protection Onboard electronics constantly monitors all motor phases. f the ASC chip set senses that one or more of the phases is missing during a steady state operation of a fully loaded motor, it will trip in 3 seconds. f a single phase condition is present during starting, the CEP 7 will trip within 8 seconds (for a motor loading of > 8 %). These trip times are significantly faster then conventional bimetal overloads. n addition, the CEP 7 relay detects a 5 % phase imbalance in the same way as a phase loss. This current will be sensed and amplified by solid state circuits. f the ground fault current is larger than the selected ground fault trip level of the overload relay, the overload relay will trip. A unique circuit within the CEP 7 protection modules monitors for motor starting inrush current. The circuit inhibits the protection feature during the motor start period and arms the protection function after the inrush current falls to motor rated current. This allows the motor to start and run, avoiding nuisance tripping during the inrush period. cep 7 pass through overload 5 NOTE: * No letter indicates 3 phase; S indicates single phase 6

12 CEP 7-CBCT Core balance transformers Control wiring installation CEP 7-CBCT ground fault trip data The control wiring must be a twisted pair Lines in excess of one metre long must be a shielded pair with the shield connected to ground at only one point mportant: the shield, if present, of the twisted pair must be connected to earth ground at the sensor, with no connection made at the overload relay Maximum length is 3 metres for the shielded cable Sensor fastener torque Nm CEP 7-CBCT lead wires should be twisted before termination by applying one twist per inch CEP 7 overload RELAY WTH CEP 7-EGF or CEP 7-EGJ (CEP 7-EE) Power cable installation All power cables, including the neutral when used, must pass through the sensor window. The equipment ground conductor (the conductor used to carry the non-current carrying metal parts of equipment) must not pass through the sensor window. 2 The power cables, going through the sensor window, must be straight, tightly bundled, centred in the window, and perpendicular to the sensor for a length equal to or greater than six times the cable bundle diameter (including insulation) from the sensor (see Figure ). 3 All other conductors with available fault currents in excess of, A should be placed a distance equal to or greater than six times the cable bundle diameter (including insulation) from the sensor (see Figure 2). 4 The power cables of the branch circuit, to be protected by the overload relay, must not be grounded on the load side of the ground fault sensor. 5 f the power cables are enclosed in a conducting jacket, the jacket must be grounded on the line side of the sensor. The jacket must not pass through the sensor window, but must be cut at the window and joined with a conductor that passes outside the sensor window. 6 The power system must be solidly grounded or grounded through an impedance at the source, as long as the impedance allows for a magnitude of current to flow that is within the operational range of the overload relay. L L2 L3 CEP 7 overload RELAY WTH CEP 7-EGF or CEP 7-EGJ (CEP 7-EE) S S2 Motor Attention: the ground fault protection system is intended for equipment use only. This system is not a ground fault circuit interrupter for personnel protection. Ground fault trip delay The delay between the occurrence of a ground fault and a trip of the CEP 7 varies, but is generally described by one of the following: < 6 seconds, for a ground fault present at power up of the side mount module < 3 seconds, if the protection inhibit has not been cleared. Under no conditions should a ground fault trip take longer than 3 seconds Figure Figure 2 Attention: To prevent electrical shock, disconnect from power source before installing or servicing. nstall in a suitable enclosure, keep free from contaminants. Do not apply power to a system with power cables going through the sensor unless the sensor is connected to the overload relay. A spacer, having the same diameter as the conductors being used, should be used to separate the phase conductors Single cable per phase Two cables per phase Ø A B C C B A A B C spacer CEP 7-CBCT 2 and 3 E.8 A 44.5 C 3.2 Figure A Figure B Ø D 5.3 Attention: The ground fault protection system is intended for equipment use only. This system is not a ground fault circuit interrupter for personnel protection. F B An ideal core-balanced ground fault toroid responds only to the sum of the currents flowing through the sensor window, however, an actual core balanced transformer may saturate if the phase currents are too large. This results in ground fault sensor output even if the sum of the phase currents is zero. Saturation can be minimised by choosing a ground fault sensor with adequate core size and symmetrically locating the phase conductors in the centre of the sensor window as shown above. mm cat No. a b c Ø d e f CEP 7-CBCT CEP 7-CBCT CEP 7-CBCT
