4 4 HOT SUMMERS and WHY DOES IT NOT COOL We ve been accused of having all the answers: WE SIMPLY DO NOT! Most questions are asked by owners of 10 year old and older coaches. That explains a lot: Is your insulation like new? Are you condenser and evaporator coils like new? Is your compressor, it s switches, it s capacity control unloaders like new? Of course not! Any or all of these may contribute to it not cooling like it once did. You can do needed maintenance and restore SOME of it s shortcomings. No CLEAN the evaporator coil - with a good coil cleaner, spray it on, let is soak for 20 minutes and clean with a good hose wand that is designed to spray directly between the fins: We have them for $ UPS. No CLEAN the condenser coil - with coil cleaner as above + a good water hose. No CHECK compressor: All heads pumping? A point-and-shoot-infrared thermometer will tell. ($ UPS.) Between top 2 bolts on side head, and between bottom 2 bolts should be over 30 degrees apart, near 0, a bad unloader or broken valves, if deg. apart, probably at least 1 broken valve. These 3 checks along with good maintenance and refrigerant level will help. Another handy: Compressor clutch hub nut socket: $ UPS. We installed a Welch Auxiliary system: the only problem was the Caterpillar engine didn t have the provisions to mount another compressor. We made a custom pulley and machined it to mount on the alternator pulley: by using a smaller pulley, we were able to get the compressor to spin 3100 RPM full throttle, and 1600 RPM at an idle. We fabricated a custom bracket to mount the compressor, tying the block to the alternator for added strength. With the main system now working, and the auxiliary system pumping cold air, this coach is ready to take on the tropics!
