2 Page 2 NCKCC News - February 2007 HILLER AVIATION MUSEUM TOUR - FEB 17 This February tour was the highest priority event that came out of our January 13th planning. James Wagner is the Champion for the event and is exceptionally well qualified to lead the tour. Plan to meet at the Museum at 10 a.m. when it opens. James has told me he is working on setting up a Chinese Buffet at a nearby location. Here is some information about the museum that you should find interestion. History: The Hiller Aviation Institute & Museum was founded by helicopter pioneer Stanley Hiller Jr. in June The institute was conceived in the early 70s on the premise that objective presentation of history, with all its linkages and drivers, would be a logical foundation which to construct a vision of future global science and aviation. Silicon Valley is an ideal location for an institution where science and aviation problems and solutions can be explored, evaluated, taught and communicated to the public and corporate audiences. Concentrated in this area are the talents, sciences, the progressive attitudes and capital resources needed to develop science and aviation in the 21st Century. To accomplish these goals, the institute s Board of Directors built a composite structure comprising the Hiller Aviation Museum and the education and research center. Exhibit A collection of aviation history spanning over the past 30 years by Stanley Hiller. Collection includes 50 aircraft exhibits and numerous displays such as: 1869 Avitor Hermes Jr. (first aeroplane to fly - unmanned). 1883, 1905, & 1911 gliders (Montgomery) Eugene Ely s Curtiss Pusher (the first plane to land on a ship) Lincoln Beechey s Little Looper (first aerobatics airplane) Hiller 360 (first inherently-stable helicopter to be licensed by the FAA) Flying Platform (first ducted fan, mancarrying, VTOL

3 NCKCC News - February 2007 Page XROE Rotorcycle (fully collapsible helicopter) Boing 747 cockpit (interactive display) Boeing Condor (spy plane with 201-ft. wing span)..facilities The museum s 53,000 square foot complex consists of a main exhibit hall, an entrance atrium, 35-seat Theater, 50-seat conference center, gift store/restoration shop/and kitchen facilities for catered events. Location The museum is located at the Northwest corner of the San Carlos Airport, San Mateo County, and immediately adjacent to highway 101. Project Value Cost of the facility and aircraft presentation is valued at $25 million. Membership 1,000 members of the museum. Visitors More than 50,000 annually. Operations 15 staff members and 100+ Volunteers DUES ARE DUE FOR 2007 Thank you - the 23 more people that have sent in their dues checks. $24 per year still keeps you a member in good standing and keeps you on the newsletter mailing list.
