Pedro Loureiro, president of Nomad Framing in Monroe Township, N.J., says Magni models have nearly eliminated the use of a tower crane, which can add tens of thousands of dollars and up to two or three weeks on its jobs. The company specializes in wood-frame apartment buildings in the urban areas surrounding Philadelphia and New York City. We ve basically cut out crane costs by 90%, he says. It s very significant. Most of the projects we can get done without hiring a crane at all. The ability of being able to use a machine like a Magni really helps us immensely in these projects, because the machine is very versatile that it can be a forklift or that it can basically act almost as a crane, Loureiro says. Some of the building that we re doing, we don t necessarily need a crane, all we need is a high-reach forklift. By having a high-reach forklift, we can save a boatload of money.

Ernie Salisbury, operations manager for Kentucky Building Systems in Owensboro, Ky., says their pre-engineered metal and structural steel erection work includes unloading, installing, and finishing materials. That would typically take three different machines in the past, until they started using Magni rotating telehandlers. With the fork attachment, we re able to unload the products, Salisbury says. I didn t need to have a crane brought on site taking the forks off and using the jib and hoist, there s my crane. And then we were able to use the 20-ft. man basket in place of all the boom lifts when we start sheeting our walls. The personnel basket attachment solved a specific problem for their work, Salisbury says. 8 Our crews used to travel with a 15-ft. long basket that we would use on the traditional teleboom forks, he says. This method was used so you could work a larger area of the building when installing sheet, gutter, etc. OSHA banned the use of these homemade attachments unless the basket was fabricated by the equipment manufacturer. The OEMs of the telescoping boom lifts didn t make a similar basket that met their needs, Salisbury says. This slowed our production rates, he says. The RTH 5.35 S, however, can attach to a Magni-made personnel basket that folds out from 8 ft. to about 20 ft. and handles up to 2,200 lbs. It also can be repositioned with remote by an operator in the basket. By swapping out attachments on a recent project, he says they saw about a 15% savings in their production rates. It s the benefit of being able to switch out attachments and how quickly it can change from one machine to the next, Salisbury says. 9 Turning Heads The 360 turret rotation of the gold award-winning RTH 6.46 SH was a key benefit for Angelo Curto, director of operations for Adam s European Contracting of Brooklyn, New York, as opposed to other telehandlers in his fleet. I can station myself in one location and be able to turn the machine around and pick up the equipment, Curto says. He also says its size with its adaptable outriggers works well with the housing developments they often work on. The footprint on the Magni is actually very small compared to some of my other equipment, for the heights that I can achieve with this machine which is very good for tight spaces, he says. Curto says his company has used the model on at least two projects that have included 14-story buildings where he would have needed a crane in the past. The reach is one of the biggest features for us the fact we can go up that high without a crane 150 ft. of boom is pretty impressive, Curto says. Labor cost is very expensive nowadays, so if you can eliminate one piece of equipment and one operator, and I can put him on another job, it keeps things moving. Overall, it will save me money.
