2 WHEEL CHOCKS FOR /5 1.0 PURPOSE This specification describes the minimum requirements for wheel chocks used in the underground and surface mining operations. The intent of this standard is to prevent any undesired movement of the motor vehicle. Wheel chocks should be used as a backup to the parking brake system in cases where a motor vehicle is left unattended or is being maintained or repaired..0 APPLICATION This specification, applies at any Vale locations indicated with approval on the cover page. 3.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTATION The following documents were used in the development of this document or have instructions and procedures applicable to it. They shall be used in their most recent revision. - OHSA Regulations 854/90 - Section 107 Wheel Chocks - SAE J348 Rev.JUN90 Wheel Chocks - VALE Ramp Test Data: Gear Loads Capacity and Wheel Chock Listing 4.0 CONTEXT The equipment standard was developed to meet the requirements for motor vehicles in a mine, and is based on design criteria from the OHSA Regulations 854/90 (107) in conjunction with SAE J348 and Vale Ramp Test documentation. 5.0 QUALITY Wheel chocks should be sized and designed to prevent the motor vehicle from rolling over the chock on the steepest slope in its area of operation. The Society of Automotive Engineers has a standard SAE J348 JUN90 "Wheel Chocks" that gives guidance on chocks for smaller sizes of wheels up to 1.7m diameters. The wheel chock for that vehicle must keep the vehicle immobilized on the steepest ramp that vehicle is required to travel in the mine. Suitable wheel chocks should always be used or other means taken to immobilize the vehicle. Careful testing and documenting of the suitable chock for each type of vehicle shall be done, with results posted in the Vale Gear Loads Capacity and Wheel Chock Listing.
3 WHEEL CHOCKS FOR 3/5 This specification details options that are permitted for use on motor vehicles based on maximum grade, gross vehicle weight and tire diameter. Wheel chocks must be designed and approved by a certified engineer to meet Vale s requirements. 1) Wheel Chock Sizes - Wheel chocks will be restricted to 4 sizes. The recommended wheel chock by design will be verified and approved during testing for specific equipment. ) Vale Specific Wheel Chock lication - See Ramp Test Data: Gear Loads Capacity and Wheel Chock Listing a. Size 1 wheel chocks may only be used for vehicles meeting ALL of the following i. Wheel diameter is under 54 ii. Gross Vehicle Weight (with payload) of less than 40,000lbs b. Size wheel chocks may only be used for vehicles meeting ALL of the following i. Wheel diameter is under 75 ii. Gross vehicle weight (with payload) of less than 10,000lbs c. Size 3 wheel chocks may only be used for vehicles meeting ALL of the following i. Wheel diameter is under 80 ii. Gross vehicle weight (with payload) of less than 00,000lbs d. Size 4 wheel chocks will be used for all vehicles not meeting the criteria of Size 1, Size, or Size 3. 3) Wheel Chock Brackets a. All machines will be equipped with brackets to accommodate two wheel chocks. b. Brackets will be designed and sized such that the approved size of wheel chock fits properly without excessive width and that incorrect size wheel chocks will not fit the

Brackets will be located in a location that is readily accessible to the operator from the operator s compartment side, front, or rear, of the machine when the machine is stopped or parked. d. Brackets will have chains with snap latches or other permanently attached provisions to secure the wheel chock in place. 4) Wheel Chock lication Wheel chocks in the different sizes will be applied as follows and include physical application testing on site to approve a chock size to specific machines and verify performance as per table below: GROSS VEHICLE OPERATING WEIGHT Wheel Chocks shall be APPROVED for use on 0% Grade Up to 40,000 lbs (18,144 kg) Up to 10,000 lbs (54,431 kg) Up to 03,000 lbs (90,718 kg) Over 03,000 lbs (90,718 kg) Up to 54" (137. cm) SIZE 1 (8" Wide) SIZE (1" Wide) TIRE DIAMETER RANGE Up to 75" (190.5 cm) SIZE SIZE (1" Wide) Up to 80" (03. cm) (1" Wide) (1" Wide) (1" Wide) Over 80" (03. cm) Equipment specific wheel chocks will be considered in special applications provided that it meets the safety factor requirements for the equipment and the workforce.
