3 Fire & Rescue Service Equipment Hydraulic Rescue Equipment R411E Ram and Ram Extension 1 General Description The LUKAS e-draulic rescue equipment has been purchased for the use of KFRS personnel within both the Channel Tunnel Emergency Response Centre and at strategic locations within the County. 2 Primary Function The rams are designed to operate as a double acting cylinder. The battery must be fully charged before initial operation. For mains supply use, refer to paragraph 5.9. Version 1.0 Page 3

5 For battery use, refer to paragraph Switching on the Device Press the mains switch (figure 1, item b). 5.3 Operating the Star Grip Twist and hold the star grip (figure 2) in the direction of the corresponding symbol: Figure 2 Star grip operation Open the device by turning the star grip (in a clockwise direction) to the open symbol:. This action extends the piston within the device. Close the device by turning the star grip (in an anti-clockwise direction) to the close symbol:. This action retracts the piston within the device Dead-man s Function If the star grip is released, it automatically returns to the central position and stops operating, ensuring the full load-holding is maintained. 5.4 Extend To extend turn and hold the star grip clockwise (figure 1, item a). 5.5 Retract To retract turn and hold the star grip anti-clockwise. 5.6 Dead-man s Function If the star grip is released, it automatically returns to the central position and stops operating and the piston remains in position, even under pressure. 5.7 Extension for the Ram A special extension is available for the Ram, which may be used to enlarge the effective possible opening width of an object. 6 5.8 Procedure for Installing the Extension Pull the claw off the cylinder base. Check whether the O-ring is still attached to the cylinder base and is in good condition. Where necessary, replace the O-ring. Check the good fit of the O-ring, grease the contact surfaces using LUKAS special grease and insert the extension onto the cylinder base until it reaches the limit stop. When the extension is no longer required after the operation, remove it by following the instructions in the reverse order and store it in a suitable place. Figure 3 Lukas Equipment Battery WARNING / CAUTION! Keep batteries that are not in use away from objects that could bridge the electrical contacts. A short-circuit between the battery contacts may result in burns or a fire. When fluid leaks from the battery, it must be cleaned up, using a dry cloth. Wear suitable protective clothing during this process (e.g. rubber gloves and goggles). Avoid direct skin and eye contact with the fluid. In the event of inadvertent contact, rinse with water immediately and consult a doctor, where necessary. Batteries should only be stored in well-ventilated, cool rooms. The maximum storage temperature of 60 C may not be exceeded. Avoid exposing batteries to long-term, direct sunlight during storage. 5.9 Power Supply mains operation The e-draulic devices have a unique power supply with integrated electronics, allowing the devices to be operated for an almost unlimited time by connecting them to an external power source. The power supply converts the voltage of the external power source in such a way that it may be used instead of a battery. Version 1.0 Page 5

7 5.9.1 Use Plug the adapter into the equipment in place of the chargeable battery. Connect the other end of the supply to a mains socket or generator Using the Lukas Battery Charger Unplug the power supply (where used) from the mains. Fully press down the two unlocking buttons and pull the battery or power supply carefully out of the device. See figure 5. Do not use force. The battery can now be recharged in the charger (fig. 4). The power supply or a charged battery can be used in the spreader. Insert a charged battery into the device until it reaches the limit stop. 8 6 Advantages/Disadvantages/Limitations 6.1 Advantages None. 6.2 Disadvantages/Limitations With an off centre force application, there is the risk of buckling. The ram is not designed for pulling. Ensure that when jacking, blocks are used. 7 Tests Test the R411E Ram in accordance with Standard Test Procedure (STP) 179. Specifically for the Channel Tunnel Emergency Response Centre the equipment remains the property of Eurotunnel. Maintenance and repair will be undertaken by LUKAS under the terms of a maintenance contract. Subsequently, any defects must be reported to Eurotunnel and not KFRS.
