The preservation society was so hard up that it cut timber along the line and sold it for wood pulp. The only means of moving it to a road/rail head was to use two flat trolleys. I can tell you it was very hard work pushing a ton or so of wood for 1.5 miles to the railhead! Photo Andy Webb Later on, the KESR managed to get some internal combustion power in the shape of a 1930's Morris 20HP to which rail wheels were attached (very Col Stephens!). The photo of the Morris was taken at Tenterden. The huts behind are not Nissen Huts, but a larger version called Romney huts. There are five of them in total. They were installed during WW2 as emergency food stores known as Buffer Depots. During the 1960s they stored raw sugar in them, you can imagine the wasp problem. The huts were decommissioned in the 1970s (?) and sold to a local farmer. Today the one you can't see (out of shot to the left) houses the Colonel Stephens Museum and a forge. The remaining four house the "The Old Dairy" brewery. The wheels are from a Buda Push Car (big centre boss).

14 My best guess at the 1882 missing text is: DIRECTIONS FOR ADJUSTING This car, as it leaves the factory, is properly adjusted to run on standard gauge track, or 4 feet 8 1/2 inches, unless otherwise ordered. Flange of driving wheel should run, say, one-fourth inch from the rail. When the drive wheel is in position, as above, forward wheel should stand in exact line with track. Both wheels are adjusted in this particular by moving boxes on right hand of machine backward and forward. The small or guide wheel should run in exact line with track, which is governed by adjustable brace having screw eyes at one end, and also by the slotted hole in axle at its junction with truss rod. GENERAL DIRECTIONS In no case run machine backward. On making curves lean well toward guide wheel. Clean Ball Bearings with kerosene or gasoline and lubricate with vaseline once every two or three months. Keep other bearings well oiled, but do not oil teeth of gears.
