For him, corporate success and a technological leading edge go hand in hand with sustainable use of resources and a clean future. He was able to see all this during his visit to the new Johnson Controls Battery Center in Holland, Michigan, US, on 11 August President Obama was extremely impressed by the factory. Innovative technologies are key to achieving environmental goals in the US, said Obama, addressing 400 guests and employees. According to Chairman of the Board and CEO Steve Roell, this is what gives Johnson Controls its leading position throughout the battery industry. With investments in excess of US$460 million in the facility in Holland, Michigan, alone, Johnson Controls has created ideal conditions for a CO 2-free future and more than 700 new jobs. The factory manufactures lithiumion batteries for use in electric cars and powertrains for hybrid and electric cars. But further investments have also made a significant contribution to Johnson Controls market leadership and include the cutting-edge technology, which has already successfully established itself in the European market and, with the VARTA brand, in the factory-fitted batteries market. Vehicles with technology will also be making their mark in the US market next year. In Ohio alone, US$138.5 million are currently being invested in an existing facility, so that it can manufacture batteries featuring technology in the future.
