3 Introduction The panel of experts has set out global goals through the following basket of measures: Aircraft related technology development Alternative fuels Improved air traffic management and infrastructure use More efficient operations Economic/ market-based measures Regulatory measures 3

4 Introduction The A37-19 Assembly resolution admits the importance of investigation and development on alternative fuels Agreement that the sustainable alternative fuels represent an advantage to reduce dependence on petroleum based fuels Represent a key step in the mitigation actions in the battle for climate change By replacing conventional jet fuel with equal amounts of biofuel, significant reductions in lifecycle CO 2 emissions can be achieved 4

5 Introduction Mexico has made great efforts to promote the development of a sustainable aviation biofuels industry On April 1 st, the first demonstration flight was made with a 27% Mexican Jatropha curcas based bio-spk and 73% Jet A-1 blend by an Airbus A320 of Interjet Mexico is finalizing a comprehensive exercise called the Flight Plan Towards Sustainable Aviation Biofuels in Mexico 5

6 Flight Plan Towards Sustainable Aviation Biofuels The objective of the Flight Plan is to identify and analyze the existing and missing elements in the supply-chain of aviation biofuels Involves all interested stakeholders Looks to: Focus efforts of civil, governmental, private and research organizations, intent on the production of aviation biofuels Analyze the legal framework, raw materials availability, refining facilities, supply processes and economic viability Integrate the talents and knowledge of participating sectors 6

Raw materials and extraction General conclusions: Mixed production model is likely to be best option (government, producers, investors) in line with harvesting and extracting methods Technological packages need to take into account intervening variables (region, climate, producer, etc.) By-products need to be considered as they have a positive impact on the business model of the producers Lifecycle, environmental impact, and land-use analyses are key 26

32 Conclusions Mexico has a great opportunity to become a world leader in the production of alternative fuels for aviation A focus on sustainability is key The main bottleneck is the production of enough feedstock There is great interest from all levels of government (federal, state and local), the private sector and the community in general for participating and getting involved in this initiative It is imperative that all efforts are integrated this is a team effort! 32
