3 Wear Plates Explanatory Note Typically the D Series Alfa Laval SSP Pump does not use an adjustable casing system. Shims are used on the back of the rotor case to change front and back clearances of the rotor case. It has been found that most rotary lobe pump designs lead to wear of the rotors themselves. Therefore, VERDER has determined that radial wear plates are not necessary for these types of applications. Instead, the D series uses rotors with a Trilobe design constructed of Urethane to a Durometer hardness of 90. The rotors also incorporate slots in the tip of each rotor to assist solids around the radial path of the rotorcase. This design and choice of materials reduces wear on the rotors and the need for wear plates and the number of wearable parts overall. Urethane is harder than the specified rubber coating and is more abrasion resistant. The rotor tip slots help to prevent solids from imbedding in the rubber and scoring the casing. 4 Traditional Loading Vs. Front Loading Mechanical Seals There is a great debate about the benefits and handicaps between rotary lobe pumps with traditional loading mechanical seals with an air gap or front loading mechanical seals with an oil reservoir. This article will discuss three topics to consider when making a decision to go with traditional loading or front loading mechanical seal design in rotary lobe pumps: overall design of the pump, maintenance, and seal life. There are a few rotary lobe pump manufacturers whose standard design incorporates the front loading mechanical seal. The design of their pump forces them to use front loading seals. They typically have a rotorcase, oil reservoir, and gear case. This gives the pump a shorter length, and the look of a one piece or close coupled pump. The oil reservoir is required to keep the front loading mechanical seal lubricated during pump use and provides a barrier between the process fluid and the gearcase oil. The type of pump was initially marketed and used in the farming industry for spreading manure as fertilizer. The need for a light pump with a small foot print for tractor mounting, led to a pump that not robust enough for municipal sludge applications. The traditional loading mechanical seal is used by rotary lobe pumps that utilize a rotorcase, air gap, and gearcase. Mechanical seals in this case are lubricated by a water flush. This type of rotary lobe pump was specifically designed for municipal applications with more bearings, longer more robust drive and auxiliary shafts, and the ability to use specialized seals for different process fluids. Front loading seals are marketed as delivering the benefit of easier and faster maintenance for the end user. Although this is true, the design also comes with a few short comings. Front loading seals allow the end user to simply remove lobes and then remove the seal from the rotorcase without removing the rotorcase from the piping. This is the fast part of front loading seal maintenance. Not having to remove the rotorcase from the pipe work means less time and work. When a front loading fails, the oil reservoir must be drained, cleaned, and refilled with fresh oil. When a front loading seal begins to fail, the process fluid the seeps into the oil chamber and contaminate the oil. At this point, a simple lip seals are all that protect the gearcase bearings and oil from the process fluid. All of these items add to the cost, time, and speed of the maintenance when changing the seals and negates the maintenance in place theory. The traditional loading design requires disconnecting the rotorcase from the piping prior to seal replacement. The air gap associated with these types of rotary lobe pumps allows the pump to run indefinitely even when the seal has failed without damaging any part of the gearcase or the pump. During the seal failure, process fluid simply leaks on to the floor or into a drip pan under pump. The air gap affords a huge benefit in regards to maintenance scheduling, and keeping your process running. When front loading seals fail, the pump must be stopped immediately, because there is nowhere for the sludge or process fluid to go except the gearcase oil chamber. The front loading design leaves the mechanical seal components inside and vulnerable to the process fluid. This vulnerability increases wear to the seal from the process fluid, i.e. grit, chemical attack. The traditional loading mechanical seal design allows for the flush system to be in place for protection of the seal against the process fluid. The flush system keeps the process fluid away from the seal by equalizing the pressure in the rotor case, so the seals do not wear as quickly. This design also keeps the seal out of the process fluid which protects the seal against premature failure and unwanted wear. Another benefit to the traditional loading seal/air gap design is being able to use a non proprietary seal from other seal manufacturers. 5 end user the ability to use a seal of their choice that they may have standardized on in their facility. The front loading designed can only use proprietary seals because the rotorcase cannot be adjusted to fit different seals. The marketing strategy by front loading/close coupled rotary lobe pumps based on the ease of maintenance is misleading. Yes, the benefit of having front loading seals is so you can take them out quicker and not have to disturb the pump rotorcase. However you also have to worry about replacing any other damaged lip seals and/or bearings in the gearcase, and replace any contaminated oil. You also have to stop the pump from running rendering your process frozen until the pump is repaired. The traditional loading seal and air gap design rotary lobe has been around for decades and has proven to be the most reliable, robust, and best quality in the rotary lobe pump market. You have the ability to use other manufacturers mechanical seals, you can keep your process running until you can schedule proper maintenance, the cost of repair is lower, and you have a visual confirmation that the seal has indeed failed. Summary: The Alfa Laval/SSP Rotary Lobe pump can do either of these sealing options, front and rear loading. The front loading design was incorporated due to the misinformed need of the front loading seal which lessens maintenance time. Alfa Laval incorporates an Air Gap in place of the oil reservoir seen in the design of their competitor s. This air gap allows for rear loading seals, which keep the seals primarily away /out of the process fluid, which lengthens the life of the seal. The ability to do a controlled flush on the seal also increases the life of the seal because it helps debris out of the seal faces. The rear loading seals and air gap also allow the end user to run the pump indefinitely when a seal fails, allowing for proper maintenance to be scheduled and/or the end user to take notice of the failure. Nine times out of ten municipal WTPs don t have someone checking the pumps every hour on the hour. With the front loading /oil reservoir design if the seal failure isn t caught in time, it leads to more parts of the pump being damaged. With the rear loading/air gap design the process fluid, mainly sludge, just leaks into a pan or on the floor with a drain.
