1 TG1Y(98) SPLIT-SYSTEM AIR-COOLED CONDENSING UNITS HCA300, 360, 80 & THRU 50 NOMINAL TONS HCA80 DESCRIPTION These units are completely assembled, piped and wired at the factory to provide one-piece shipment and rigging. Each unit is pressurized with a holding charge of refrigerant- for storage and/or shipping. The compact design, clean styling, low silhouette, and quiet operation make these condensing units suitable for almost any outdoor location. On rooftops... because they weigh much less than a single package unit of similar capacity and are much easier to rig and support. At ground level... because their ample sub-cooling capacity allows them to be located three or more stories below the evaporator coil. Every condenser coil is pressurized with air to 35 psig and leak tested under water. After assembly, the unit is pressurized with a combination of refrigerant- and nitrogen to 50 psig for pressure testing and additional leak testing. During this pressure test, the operation of the high pressure control is checked. As the unit is being evacuated and dehydrated, the operation of the low pressure control is checked. Every compressor, condenser fan motor, crankcase heater, and electrical control circuit is checked to assure a trouble-free start-up and years of reliable operation. The condenser fan guards are vinyl-coated to provide additional rust protection and to enhance the appearance of the unit. Compressors are mounted on spring isolators in an enclosed compartment to reduce the transmission of vibration and sound. Vertical discharge condenser fans direct sound upward and away from any surrounding structures. All sheet metal parts are constructed of commercial grade (G90) galvanized steel. After fabrication, each part is thoroughly cleaned to remove any grease or dirt from its surfaces. The external parts are coated with a desert sand powder paint to assure a quality finish for many years. This UL approved coating system has passed the 750 hour, 0% salt spray test per ASTM Standard B117. All models include a 1-year limited warranty on the complete unit. An additional -year extended compressor warranty is available as an option on all models. A matching line of Evaporator Blower units is also offered to meet your precise capacity and air handling requirements. Refer to Form TG for more information on this air side equipment. FEATURES Copeland Discus semi-hermetic compressors provide both high efficiency and reliability. Condenser coils are constructed of copper tubes and aluminum fins for durability and long lasting efficient operation. Crankcase heaters that will be de-energized when the compressor is operating. Both high and low pressure controls. Since these controls are self-contained, there are no capillary lines to be damaged. Solid state motor protection. The module also provides both low voltage and anti-short cycle protection. Class, -volt thermostat control circuit.

2 TG1Y A filter-drier is shipped in the unit s compressor compartment for field installation in the liquid line near the evaporator coil. Two are provided on all 0 and 50 ton models. Suction, liquid and discharge line service valves. Each valve has a back-seating access port for pressure testing the system. Copper stub-outs are factory mounted on the suction and liquid line service valves to simplify the field piping connections. Multiple controls to provide stable system operation at ambient temperatures down to 0 F. Refer to page 11 for a typical condenser fan motor operating sequence. Some units will have more or fewer condenser fans, but the sequence of operation will be similar. Capacity reduction for more economical operation and more even temperature levels within the conditioned space. Part-winding-start on 08/30 volt units. A 7/8" spud connection on the discharge header of the condenser coil to simplify the addition of hot gas bypass. Refer to Form N6 for additional information. A timer in each compressor circuit providing anti-short-cycle protection and a bypass around the system s low pressure control during start-up. This prevents nuisance tripping at low ambient conditions. A low oil-pressure control with manual reset for additional compressor protection. A lockout circuit to prevent the unit from cycling on safety control. Non-recycling pumpdown. Without pumpdown, the expansion valve will overfeed each time the system starts up and shuts down. This excess refrigerant will accumulate in the crankcase of the compressor and will mix with the crankcase oil. If the ON cycles are short, the refrigerant will not have a chance to separate from the oil gradually. If the OFF cycles are short, the operation of the crankcase heater will be ineffective. After 10 or 15 short ON and OFF cycles in succession, there may be enough refrigerant mixed with the crankcase oil to cause the oil to foam when the compressor starts up and to be pumped out of the compressor. If the oil level drops below the suction intake to the oil pump, the oil pressure will drop and the oil failure switch will shut down the compressor. With pumpdown, a solenoid valve will close the liquid line when the cooling requirement has been satisfied to prevent any refrigerant from feeding through the expansion valve when the system shuts down. Since the compressor will continue to run until it is shut down by a low pressure cutout, the evaporator coil should be relatively dry when the liquid line solenoid valve reopens. Although the expansion valve will overfeed the evaporator coil when the system starts up, all of the refrigerant will evaporate before it reaches the compressor. 11 TYPICAL CONDENSER FAN MOTOR TG1Y The #3 condenser fan motor is controlled by both ambient temperature and system capacity. At full compressor, a control relay will keep it energized at any ambient temperature. At less than full compressor, an outdoor thermostat will lock it out below 75 F. The # condenser fan motor is controlled by compressor discharge pressure. When the pressure drops below 180 psig, the motor will be powered through a choke coil and its speed will drop from 1075 to 50 RPM. 3 1 COMPRESSOR COMPARTMENT The # condenser fan motor is controlled by both ambient temperature and system capacity. An outdoor thermostat will lock it out below 5 F. A control relay will lock it out when the compressor is operating at 1/3 capacity. The #1 condenser fan motor is controlled by ambient temperature. An outdoor thermostat will lock it out below 65 F. NOTE: All outdoor thermostats have a 10 F differential. The high pressure control has a 5 psi differential. Unitary Products Group 11
