Refer to the 2011 Outlander service manual on MEDIC or CD (p/n MSCD-007B- 2011), and the vehicle owner's manual for details on these and other features. POWER TRAIN 4B12 (2.4L) Engine enhancements The 2011 Outlander 4 cylinder engine has been refined to provide increased fuel economy and reduced emissions. Several enhancements have been made to improve fuel economy and durability. Low Friction Engine Oil (0W-20) Use oil that meets or exceeds API Service Standard SM during servicing and repair. MMNA supplies 0W-20 oil meeting these standards under part number MZ

Resin Coated Pistons with Low Tension Rings The piston skirt is coated with an anti-friction coating, which is already used on Lancer Evolution pistons.

First scheduled maintenance replacement is at 8 years or 120,000 miles (192,000 km).

3 Resin Coated Pistons with Low Tension Rings The piston skirt is coated with an anti-friction coating, which is already used on Lancer Evolution pistons. Piston ring tension has been reduced to create less drag, increasing fuel economy. Super Long Life Premium Coolant (Super LLC Premium) Super LLC Premium coolant is identified by its blue color. First scheduled maintenance replacement is at 8 years or 120,000 miles (192,000 km). Once the coolant has been changed through repair or maintenance, subsequent scheduled replacement is at 6 year/90,000 mile (144,000 km) increments, due to deteriorated coolant left in the system. The cooling system should not be flushed. Coolant is bottled at a precise 50/50 mixture and is sensitive to being mixed precisely. When mixed incorrectly, the effectiveness drops off drastically. Residual water in the system would dilute the coolant mixture and affect its performance. Iridium Spark Plugs Iridium "needle-to-needle" spark plugs with a small needle on the ground probe provide more consistent spark. The iridium center electrode and platinum side electrode extend spark plug replacement intervals to 105,000 miles. 4B12 2.4L Engine NGK DIFR5C11

High Efficiency Alternator A new, compact, 130A alternator using a multistage generation control system, including dual rectifiers and a high density stator coil, is used on all 2011 Outlander 2.

It is also equipped with a one way clutch to help reduce belt noise. The charging rate of the alternator is variable and precisely controlled by the ECM.

4 High Efficiency Alternator A new, compact, 130A alternator using a multistage generation control system, including dual rectifiers and a high density stator coil, is used on all 2011 Outlander 2.4L engines. This results in higher output and efficiency with reduced noise and enhanced fuel economy, while reducing exhaust emissions. It is also equipped with a one way clutch to help reduce belt noise. The charging rate of the alternator is variable and precisely controlled by the ECM. The system detects when the vehicle is decelerating and/or braking and shifts the alternator into a high charge state. Because the alternator can increase its charge rate during decel, it can charge at a lower rate during cruise, acceleration and idle modes. When the ECM determines additional charging is necessary, it charges normally. Battery Current and Temperature Sensor The Battery Current and Temperature Sensor is mounted to the negative battery terminal (-) of vehicles equipped with 2.4L engines. The ECM detects battery charge using available voltage as a base reading and modifies it based on current and calculated battery temperature. Being able to precisely control battery charging based on need puts less mechanical load on the engine and improves fuel efficiency. Diagnostics for the sensor are found in Group 54A - Chassis Electrical of the service manual. ELECTRICAL

OTHER Low Drag Brake Calipers To reduce brake drag, the 2011 Outlander's caliper pistons return further than pistons in previous models, pulling the brake pad further off the rotor. This creates an almost imperceptible increase in brake pedal stroke. To accomplish this, the brake caliper piston seal groove has a larger taper. Changes to Runchannel for Reduced Windnoise To improve sealing and reduce wind noise, the cross section of the door runchannel weatherstrip has been changed in the indicated area.
